I get where you’re coming from completely. Zeb Wells has taken a lot of the heat from us fans, but let’s not forget - Nick Lowe, as editor, does steer the ship. He’s the one setting the direction and approving each arc, so it’s fair to wonder how much of what we’re seeing is a product of editorial vision versus just the writer’s choices. Editors like Lowe have significant influence over tone and plot direction, which can often shape a writer’s entire run. And I hear you on Romita Jr.’s art! His work was groundbreaking and iconic for so long, but sometimes you just crave a fresh style, especially after seeing his signature look on Spider-Man for so many years. It’s exciting to think about who else could come on and bring a new visual take to the character. Your history with Amazing Spider-Man sounds a lot like many fans’ experiences (mine also). Brand New Day was a major turning point for the series, and it left a lot of people with mixed feelings about Peter’s future. It’s rough when a series you love takes directions that feel like they stray from the character’s soul. Dropping and then returning to ASM with issue 60-it’s the hope that someday Spidey will get a run that feels like a return to form. Here’s hoping the next team can find that sweet spot and bring back the magic that’s been missing for so many fans. I have practically no hope, but I will be there… Greetings from Germany 😊

I am honestly a little trepidatious about the future of ASM. After the 8 deaths of spider-man they are relaunching the book and Marvel has been trying to recruit creators for the book for over a year and writers are passing on the offers. How far down the totem pole are they gonna go for recruitment. Justina Ireland writing the final arc of the current volume of ASM seems like a gig that is way above her station in comics right now. That could change, she might surprise everyone. But signs aren’t good.

Big 2 needs to learn from Manga. STOP REPEATING the same stories OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER Again. 😂 I have jumped off comics 3 times in the past 15 years because I just keep getting regurgitated crap stories that have been done before. ASM last two runs were sooo bad. Worst part about big two is the big two apologists always making excuses for them. Why is it ok for a ‘writer’ to rip off a previous writer? I was happy (momentarily) when Nick Spencer's run ended because I thought it couldn't get any worse. I was wrong by a country mile. Zeb Wells' run was absolutely horrible. It got way worse. This has to be the "lowest" point in the entire ASM run. I'm trying to be optimistic about the "new team" but how many times can we (the fans) get dumped on over and over. Nothing will change until Nick Lowe is GONE. Marvel needs to clean house in the management department and get back to "good storytelling with great art".

i like the CHASM story line. Ben and Kaine have not been used in a LONG while in a main storyline. the new powers, the Eternal mind control, and KAINE trying to help. This has a movie plot all over it.

My favorite (artist) run was with john romita senior, made the characters feel real on page and got to see the original crew of peter, harry, flash, Gwen and MJ go from best friends to... Well alot of things and those interactions felt so real. My favorite spiderman artist.

I kind of feel Marvel doesn't know what to do with ASM anymore. They can't put the book to sleep because it's their highest selling title and the most recognizable comic in the entire world. If I were Marvel, I'd, y'know listen to what readers want to see and implement that, but they won't. I liked Hallow's Eve though. Wish I could get my $8 back for this ASM comic.... oh well, it'll be up for sale next year at a convention for $1.

I hate this book and frankly this entire issue didn’t resolve anything and just had zeb wells said I am going to leave everything broken and wash my hands of this garbage to let another writer clean up the mess which is just sad and pathetic in my opinion for the next writer to fix his mess that he broke and to make it ten times worse is that marvel refuses to undo the damage instead say i don't know let peter parker and mary jane get back together and remember everything they lost and finally finding there daughter mayday parker the future spider-girl there daughter and destroy mephisto permanently, we now have this awful character paul who nobody likes myself included, who really needs to get hit by a truck literally and go away forever and never come back ever at least in my opinion. In conclusion this entire run was freaking garbage and even with Joe Kelly on the book nothing is going to change because editorial are so petty to the point that they would rather have this character fail a lot just to fit there own ego and pettiness which is just sad and depressing in my opinion.

Every thing you said was on point Mike. The Zeb Wells run will probably go down THE WORST run of The Amazing Spider-Man. It was insulting, condescending, pointless, and most importantly just absolutely soulless. As one reviewer over on the Spider Man Crawlspace site put it, Zeb Wells is like the kid who put away his favorite toys while leaving a huge mess behind in his wake for others to clean up. Thanks to Wells and Nick Lowe, MJ now has this reputation of someone who cheated on Peter .Which she ABSOLUTELY DID NOT, as she was directly manipulated and forced into a relationship with Paul by raising two fake magical kids, created by a variant of Paul’s dad for his stupid ritual to become a god. Also that last story featuring MJ and Peter was such a deliberate middle finger to the fans who wanted them back. Now MJ is dating a douche bag who was complicit in genocide, while Peter gets to date Aunt Anna’s nurse Shay, who is already confirmed to be another forgettable character that dated Peter.

10:40 Number 32 of Amazing SM is also part of that Kraven's arch (so is from 32 to 35). I am not a huge fan of Spidey anymore, but number 32 was actually my favorite issue in probably the last lustrum of SM. And yes, I would also highly recommend to get those 4 numbers (skip the rest).

Take jackpot out of Asm and let her plot with Paul and her friendship with Felicia bloom and develop for the fans that like that. Give Peter a real love interest. Let him grow! Rek rap is hilarious! Have Hallows Eve grow a rivalry with Jackpot so Spider-man can help out here and there with Jackpot to battle Hallow’s Eve and Chasm. That would make a good crossover

That Kraven arc is where I started and I agree it was good! Again the conclusion felt a bit rushed and there wasn’t much payoff but I had just got back into comics so for me I was like hey Amazing seems decent I’m going to read this! Picked up all three of those in an eBay auction for cheap just to check it out. At the time GangWar storyline had just started and seemed decent (before as you said it ended up going nowhere) and I was really enjoying the title. Picked up some back issues and found out that it was a bit of a train wreck up to that point wow. To me though it was at least bold and entertaining if not actually good. Post gangwar I realized that the run was just kind of story after story that never ended strong or had impact.. got bored and dropped it at issue 45.

I couldn’t continue this Zeb Wells run. I got fed up at issue 49 and dropped it. It’s unfortunate because I love Spider-Man. I agree with your entire assessment of Zeb’s run although I don’t think it’s entirely his fault. Editorial is to blame for a lot of this between all of the stupid “events” and things like Paul, Spideys new suit and that whole gimmick and so on. I think if Zeb was able to do his own stories without editorial in the way it could’ve been much better. And as unfortunate as it is for me to say, I couldn’t stand Jr Jr’s artwork. He’s not the same artist. Very unfortunate but I am looking forward to what’s coming.

I'm actually a huge fan of jr jr lol. I think his spiderman is a cool mix of classic cartooning and exaggeration like ditko or Kirby. I think the weakness with this run is really the storytelling unfortunately. But love your videos and opinions as always!

Zeb Wells’ divorce from SNL’s Heidi Gardner last year is likely the biggest reason for things like Paul and the drama between Peter & MJ and how they’re never reuniting as a couple. Of course a writer’s real life is going to play into their work.

Marvel went very wrong when they killed original Hobgoblin. The Rose (Kingpin's son) was a cool crime boss but Marvel killed him. Why? They brought back Norman Osborn. Fine. They give him more superpowers. Wrong. He gets a sidekick. Omg. Peter tells on TV that he is Spidey. Wrong. I actually liked him telling JJJ, but that turned out bad. Marvel needs a good editor to stop things like these.

Excellent video Mike, you make numerous good points, all of which I agree with. The introduction of Paul is the dumbest thing ever, not one person likes the character. Jackpot as a hero is silly, her costume is atrocious, and her powers are too simple/easy. Black Cat should always been in Peter's life in some manner. Peter and Felica were dating and then broke up and she disappeared. Every character in town was in Gang War, but Black Cat nowhere to be seen? Come on, you know she would have been involved somehow. I wonder how much of the blame should go to the editors? Did Wells want to go further in stories and get held back by editors? I don't know. There is no doubt the comic book community is not happy with ASM. At NYCC there was a panel with the ASM editor, and he had to leave the room due to the number of readers telling him how bad ASM has become. I am hoping we get someone good and as you said, Peter gets shot in the head.

Zeb’s run is by far the worst run on ASM even worse than Howard Mackie’s. Nick Spencer made ASM legit again but Welles ruined that momentum. The good: The first Tombstone arc. The Hobgoblin story. Norman as a good guy. White Rabbit bring practically a regular cast member. I’ll even accept #900 as ok. Hallow’s Eve. The bad: Chasm. Gangwar(it was better in the 80s). The glider(but tolerable since Spidey did used to have a Spider-Mobile, plus it fit the story) The Ock story The Kraven Story Jackpot🤦‍♂️ Then the ugly: Pretty much everything else. JR jr’s worst art. Dark Web 🤮 The Rabin story( I absolutely adore the original from #555-557 and this shat on that) Rek-Rap🤮🤮🤮 he’s nothing like Bizarro, he’s more like Bat-Mite meets Jar Jar Binks. Paul🤮🤮🤮🤮 an abomination to the series and if someone wanted to at least make this whole run tolerable, Paul would be revealed as Mephisto or a minion of his who’s been pulling the strings the whole time. Can somebody please talk Jed McKay into taking over after 8 Deaths? I feel like he’s the only current writer at Marvel that could do a decent job.

As someone getting back into comics in 2022 I started reading this run. Im a spidey guy so I thought it was a no brainer. Let's just say I didn't even last till gang war. Rekraps stupid along with pretty much all the other stuff. 8 deaths of spider-man doesn't look any better in my opinion. Ill stick to my image books amd be happy. Rook baby! Now that's a comic. 3.99 card stock cover and art that makes romita jr look like my 4 year old drew it.

In my 40+ of reading, this is definitely not my favorite run of Amazing Spider-Man. As for Dr. Ock arms, even tho they were originally fused to him, they haven’t been since the late ‘60’s. Hell, at the end of issue #56 the US Army was able to remove them and take him into custody. The arms started showing some form of sentience in issues #88 when they were on display at a museum and suddenly came to “life” and ran off to free Ock from prison.

🎯Amazing Spider-Man is and always will be a coming of age story. He’s not going to grow beyond 25. He’s meant for younger readers always and forever. You should be reading Ultimate Spider-Man if you want growth. I agree Romita art blows, he probably just meets deadlines. Amazing Spider-Man 1-300 will never be replicated.

I hate admitting this, because I'm a hypocrite when it comes to ASM. I stopped reading it. I think it's been terrible for a long time. It was terrible when I was reading it, and from what I've heard from basically everyone else I listen to, it's still terrible. But I've kept buying it. I shouldn't have been, but I have. But, I'm going to read the next issue. I hope, not expect, but hope, this 9 Lives of Peter storyline will be fun. If I hate it...I dunno. I hope that I can drop it, but will I? We'll see.

Doc Ock’s arms “you’re not my real dad I’ll go with whoever I want” 😂 Romita Jr was at a local show this past weekend I thought his line was going to be packed surprisingly no his table was pretty empty He signed some stuff for a CGC authorized dealer and he had a meet and greet event on Sunday He was kinda pricey so I did stop over I don’t regret not continuing with this run Chasm is a cool design but there was no payoff to invest in Chasm Hallows Eve very fun design I think her mini series did better than Chasm but again where’s the investment Black Cat going missing is odd she’s fought Scorpion and Carnage along with Spider-Man and being a thief character she should’ve been involved with gang war somehow Like maybe she stole plans from one of the villains to show Spider-Man and prevent it but they blame the other gang for the theft and it starts the fighting earlier than planned People early were like Jr Jr no thanks I wanted to give it a chance but man what a waste of time and ideas that could’ve been good but ruined by something else later on I’m definitely staying done with new Spider-Man..I’ll read new stuff like Conan over at Titan but back issue stuff wasn’t all masterpieces either but there’s reason people love the Conway run on Spider-Man And I don’t know if everything has been done to death or if the writer just isn’t keeping things structured enough to tell a good story Batman and Superman are way older and worlds finest is fun..and the original Worlds finest run was never a title I cared about the only major key is 1st Scarecrow in issue 3

Romita Jr and Frank Miller have completely lost their touch. Not sure if it’s age but the art is terrible now. Romita Jr. has gone to a box style in the faces and it’s not good. The Hallows Eve character is a keeper. She’s very cool.
