These children aren't learning respect. They're learning fear. When they get older, they'll learn how to identify who's coming up the stairs by their footsteps, how to hide things from them. They'll learn how to lie on the spot to avoid punishment. Children physically reacting to just the memory of being hit by a switch isn't "discipline" or "obedience." It's trauma. Nothing less. If your child is afraid of you, you are doing something *very* wrong. If you *enjoy* your child being afraid of you, your children should be taken away from you.

It's amazing that they constantly talk about respect and ghe only certain way to lose respect of any human is to hurt that person. Children treated like this will learn to be constantly alert and and untrustful towards everyone or they'll learn to lie and dominate everyone depending on their personality.

@girlwhomustnotbenamed4139

@Amy Sternheim I'm pretty sure not hitting a defenseless child is a good size to fit all adults. It is more likely that when there is an underlying loving and trusting relationship and bond between parents and children, occasional spanking is simply not enough to cause severe trauma, especially if it's a reaction to teenage rebellion, which means it's administered later in life. In my experience, emotional and physical abuse go together more often than not. When people are conscious enough not to beat their children, they usually are aware that any kind of abuse is counterproductive and is essentially a sign of failure on the parents' part to handle the situation in a constructive way. I know life is complex and complicated so it might happen that even someone very principled loses it and gives their kid a slap on the back out of frustration, anger or helplessness. It would be ideal for it never to happen but I can acknowledge that it can. My problem is with people then turning around and trying to justify it. You can't. Even if it happens on some rare occasion, people should always be clear that even then, it shouldn't have happened and handle the situation accordingly. That goes both for the aftermath of the specific case and when talking about the issue in general.

Now wouldn't say that my dad didn't spank me or that he was a perfect parent. My dad never intentionally put my life in danger(the Pearls apparently almost intentionally drowned a two year old and shoved one of there's kids hand on a stove giving them third-degree burns just because they could) I say intentionally because my dad and mom wasn't big on the whole supervision part of parenting, they made up for it in other areas though, which resulted in Me falling out of a windows, almost drowning in a sack, sled ride damage, getting poisoned by a woolly caterpillar, and getting an electrical shock all before I was five(again they didn't intend on those things happening I kind of just did them). Point being though for me to do any of that I had to be allowed to explore. I was actually able to talk at around six months of age. My dad encouraged me to ask questions and wanted me to be educated. Now I had rules I had to follow I did get spanked(usually my dad's very last resort) but I wasn't beat to the inch of my life for being a normal kid or even a kid with ADHD. My dad saw the Pearls for what they are. They are sick monsters that get a kick out of beating kids to the inch of their lives and pretend that an all mighty God told them it was all right.

Can you imagine being a parent and being so paranoid that you think everything your child does is to disrespect and challenge you? It's actually worse than that. They think everything is a WAR. You can read through any of their writings (No Greater Joy magazine, Created to be His Help Meet, Preparing to be a Help Meet, etc.) and find one example after another of how a child's or wife's unenthusiastic obedience is a battle of wills. It is frightening. If you're highly empathetic and find it difficult to read through the Abuser's Manifesto, you can also read the backlog at No Longer Quivering, where several bloggers sort through the horrible things those nutjob fundamentalist bloggers promote, condense it, and give you the highlights. There are even chapter by chapter breakdowns and analyses of some of those books, which is useful to anyone studying the psychology of the Quiverful/Christian Patriarchy subculture.

Perhaps, they were taking advantage of the times to appeal to people with a disdain for liberalism by going the far opposite extreme. Then again, I don't know precisely when they started their ministry. Of course, their book, Train Up A Child, was published in 1994, and many people were disgruntled with the liberalism of the 1990s, too. Sometime in that decade I came across an article that referred to the 90s as the 60s upside down.

I remember being a child and I can confirm 100%, when children ask "why", they really are just wanting to understand why. Also children need to have the whys explained to them anyway. Like if you tell a child not to drink poison (just an example), and then the child ask why and you're all like, "CAUSE I TOLD YOU NOT TO, THAT'S WHY", then the child doesn't actually know the harms of drinking the poison and will likely do it anyway...

Actually it's more complicated than that. Kids will often ask "why" because, as you said, they want to learn about how the world works - BUT other times it's just to maintain conversation, and in that case they don't really care about the logical answers, all they want you to do is simply talk to them. Just my 5 cents. 😊

Like, my mom says that by six months old I was saying basic words. So by age 2, I was asking questions and gathering information ALL THE TIME. If my parents had stifled my free will to speak or question what they said with violence, I don't want to think how I would have turned out. EDIT: Who the fuck disliked this video?! Unless you're downvoting the Pearls, get thee to a psychiatrist!

Exactly! Besides the fact that that leads to children who can't trust their parents. If god forbid something happens to them, they will always feel like they can't talk to their father or mother about it. There are so many studies (especially in women) that people that have had a childhood like this tend to end up in abusive relationships when they grow up...

I was raised in a Christian family that followed very similar rules. My brother and I were even beaten for playing with our sibling’s (who were small infants) toys when they weren’t being used because they believed that we were too old and needed to do other things with our time (cause beating us will get that point across). They would leave ominous notes on my bedroom walls that said “we’re watching”. I once was locked in a spare room and interrogated by my father till close to 1 in the morning because I misunderstood something he said. Due to this mistreatment I developed extreme paranoia, social anxiety, and suicidal behaviors by the age of 6. I was publicly humiliate on multiple occasions because I was struggling in math. I was refused meals until I was shaking with fatigue and could barely lift things because I hadn’t completed cleaning my room. I was beaten for accidentally breaking the vacuum cleaner when I was being forced to vacuum the house at age 4 without any explanation. I had frequent nightmares that resulted in me wetting the bed and I was always beaten for it. To this day I have no idea why misunderstand people, wanting to be in my room, being bad at math, not completing tasks quickly, or having accidents was a bad thing I just know that they are and I should be afraid whenever I do one of those things. It’s been over 10 years and I still struggle with the crippling anxiety and self doubt that my father and step-mother installed in me.

I’m a nanny for a one year old atm, started with this family when he was only six weeks. As any parent/caregiver knows there are good days and bad days (sick/diaper rash/docs appts/not enough sleep). Recently he has been discovering his independence (walking, climbing, etc.). Obviously this is great, but he will sometimes get frustrated he hasn’t figured out to play with a certain toy and throws a fit. Sure, it gets annoying when he throws a fit automatically, but you know what I do? I calm him down and show him how to do something, sometimes it takes a few weeks, but he gets it and he’s learned something new and I know I’ve done my job. There are so many positive ways to work through and with babies/kids in these situations. When you take the time to teach coping strategies, communication, identifying emotions, and how to actually respect someone, it helps them develop healthy relationships in the future. Also I was raised by an abusive father and suffer from nightmares every night, have had suicidal thoughts, have terrible memory due to repressing my childhood, (which I could tell you little to nothing about) found myself in an abusive relationship two years ago and am finally going to therapy. I now have new friends and a supportive boyfriend whom I consider to be family which has helped me tremendously while I work through the trauma.

Rebellion only comes where tyranny exists. I learned quickly as a parent that teaching discipline is an educational process. Any teacher will tell you that no human can properly learn when being hit, abused or terrorized. It works best as a cooperative venture. Yes, it is harder to convince a two-year-old to cooperate than to threaten them but the resulting learning that is accomplished is worth the effort. They are far more self-sufficient and well rounded. They also know when rules work for the good of everyone and when they don't. Unjust rules should be defied.

Am I the only one who thinks that this attitude towards your children can backfire horribly? I mean, you basically condition your child to submit to you because you are stronger and use violence to get your way. And you train yourself that you never have to explain anything to your children. Now imagine a boy hitting puberty and outgrowing his parents in strength. He will be very immature when it comes to coping with his emotions because his parents solved everything problematic with violence. They were right because they were stronger. And once the tables turn, they can only hope that the boy will not show the same attitude towards them.

I used to think I turned out fine and would probably raise my own children the same way. Ok so sometimes as kids get older they do say “why?” on repeat to try and get a rise out of people, seen it many times and honestly still think the best response is incredibly detail laden answers, stops them in their tracks while still ensuring that when they want to know about something they will ask because they know you will always answer. Wonder if the Pearls have ever considered simply talking to children, taking the time to explain the whats and whys, have open discussions about feelings around things or would that be too progressive?

This is one of the reasons why I don't want kids. I have no patience, and I'm afraid that I might wind up doing the things that those...CREATURES are promoting.

Find calm people to learn patience from, or try a pet that's too small to hit, you can try training it without losing your temper or even having violence as an option.

@@j.kaimori3848 It's not just the hitting I'm worried about. It's the emotional and mental abuse I'm worried about. You know, insults, comparing them to other children, blaming them for things, making them feel like they're inferior or hopelessly broken, yelling at them, etc.

5:10 my son has recently learned to ask "what's that?" and I absolutely live it! He has such a curious little mind and loves learning new things ❤ But I'm sure that will not be these people's approach >.< Ok yeah no, I always explain to my son why I want him to do certain things, like tidying up his toys. I think it helps motivate him to do it, when he knows why he should. Also, I had the problem with my son getting out of his bed all the time and I just kinda picked him up and put him back until he got the point. It's exhausting and takes some time but I'd imagine beating your kids takes a lot more energy! Okay the screaming pisses me off a lot. Some kids are more sensitive and I think it is important for them to try and find different ways to deal with conflict (such as going to the parents for help), but punishing only the one who screams is going to enable bullying behaviour from the other children. And that is going to lead to even more trauma than just the spanking by itself. I was not spanked, but definitely berated for crying, and basically told that kids were bullying me because I cried to much. That, among other things, has definitely damaged me. Yeah with my own 10 month old I definitely let her decide how much she eats. That will create healthy eating habits in the future. If she's full, she's full. I don't see why I should force any more food down her throat when she's full. These people are so ridiculous. Just some of my own parenting advice, and what has worked for my children. Then again, I'm actually trying to teach my children to be independent people...

The first phrase my cousin learned was “what’s this?” and her vocabulary exploded! Questions help children learn, I cannot understand why people have children if they don’t want questions...

As a survivor of physical, psychological, and emotional abuse, this got all of my internal warning alarms on full blast. All of this is absolutely training people to be abusive and I honestly feel like CPS should intervene (isn't a switch illegal?). As much as I would love to list out all that is wrong with their view of child-rearing, alas the list is too long. Here are my two cents: - Emotional recognition and analysis are the key to emotional well being and to being able to react appropriately to situations. A talk I sometimes refer to is 《How To Manage Your Emotions Before They Manage You》(it's a Ted Talk) - Violence against a child is never the way to go about things - Please DO explain to your child your reasoning for doing what you're doing (when appropriate, take their age or the situation into account), then ask them if they agree or disagree with your reasoning and why. This is an excellent way to encourage critical thinking and growth of maturity in a child, It also makes them feel appreciated because they will feel as though you are taking them seriously and their opinion matters to you.

i have a relative who was apparently a big fan of this book and gave a copy to my mom, and i think that same relative might have gotten into some sort of legal trouble for hitting her kid and bruising him.

These people are awful. It was so sad seeing the picture of all their children, knowing they were all severely abused. Anyways, my mom got so sick of me asking why, she’d always respond with “ask your teacher.” I asked A LOT of questions

This is disgusting.....there was a period of time where I was myself a very reactive person and I would swat my child's behind (NEVER hit but a little tap) and it took me all of about 3 months to realize that it DID NOT make my child listen any better ....it only made her trust me less. All violence shows your child is to fear you not respect you! These people ARE DANGEROUS considering how excited they get over blatant abuse....making a child continue to eat when they are clearly full is abuse imo!

This makes me sick to my stomach! Yet I know that this kind of abuse happens more often than people think and that very few childred dare to talk about it due to guilt or fear of consequences. I'm a preeschool teacher and studied 3,5 years at Uni, and a whole term was dedicated to spot signs of abuse (both with children and another adult as victims). We also studied child psycology and development, and though it gave a lot insight to how different methods of teaching affect children up to adulthood, I don't think that you need any specialized education to realize how damaging the Pearls' method is. On a lighter note, it is really heartwarming to see how much love there is between Rachel and Kyra, The dog just looks at her with so much affection and it's like she knows that Rachel is a bit upset for some reason, and so she must check in on her if everything is ok

As the father of 4 adult children, I find these parents disgusting. My view of parenting was that I was raising my kids to be good adults, so independence, curiosity, and self reliance were good things that we nurtured. And we did not need to hit or hurt our kids.
