New uploads Monday,Wednesday, and Saturdays! For this in depth look at the ND Mazda Miata, myself and it's owner Alex talk about his ownership experience and one particular problem that I was actually shocked about. The ND Miata during one of it's production years has a transmission issue that will send you back to the dealership multiple times. That said the issue has since been fixed, and the ND is still an incredible car to drive! Alex put his ND Miata on E85, and has a Flyin' Miata exhaust system. Thanks for watching!

I feel i've done the same thing a few times before, and I definitely do my fair share of accelerating. It's more of a curiosity thing, most people don't get to sit in the passenger of their own car with someone else accelerating, and most people nowadays can't drive manuals or wouldn't be pushing it hard, so he's probably just being attentive, I sure as hell would be with my own car being driven by someone else.

Matt Stone Miatas are meant to be revved. I tell people to shift at 3000 to 3500 in my NB for less buckle and the car doesn’t like being in a low rev range (but I do usually coast at 2000-2500 if I’m not in 5th). Not sure about the ND, though I’m sure it’s not much different.

Having the proper exhaust is worth the hassle of going through a few of them; until you are happy. I love the new Miatas more than any previous generation. The car just looks fresh, fun and properly sized for maximum pleasure. I find them a bit overpriced but once they hit the used market at a reasonable price I might end up owning one.

We think alike. I was looking for an off-lease ND but discovered that this close to the end of the model year (September), Mazda are blowing out the base 2019 Sport model. I got one for well under $25 brand new and with 1.5% financing. I don’t need the Brembo/Recaro bling and the 2019 has WAY more power than the car in this vid. And, my Sport looks badass in black.

Also keep in mind the _Fiat_ 124 for even cheaper used prices. Built in the sane factory, main diff is styling & the fiat engine, which has better torque thru the acceleration, but I wonder how dependable is the engine? I have no clue.

My '16 Sport has 43,000 miles, original transmission, no issues. I bought it in October 2015 before anyone had heard of issues. But mine is not driven hard, just enjoyed as a car that is in it's element on the curvy two lanes of New Hampshire. Probably helps that I'm 72 and have gotten all that boy racer stuff out of my system a long time ago. I've heard that few cars driven the way I do will have problems.

Hey guys, some of you may have seen my posts on the Miata.net forum or Facebook forums. As most of us know, the ND MX-5 version 1 transmissions have had an extremely high failure rate. Many 2016 owners are on their second, third, fifth, transmission. Mazda has been good about replacing these transmissions while under warranty. As the first known owner to have one fail outside of warranty (74k miles), I have been denied replacement of the defective V1 transmission I took care of for so many miles. The replacement has been quoted at $6500 by Cardinaleway Mazda in Phoenix AZ. Hundreds of MX-5 owners globally are concerned with the fate of their MX-5s as more owners will begin to reach the end of their warranties. I'm calling on all ND owners who are willing to participate, to send an email to customer service, mention how you've read a guy in Phoenix AZ was denied a transmission replacement and you are concerned for yours once outside of warranty. Mazda is denying this as an issues and the more ND owners we have expressing concern the better for future used buyers and current owners out of warranty. Thanks! MazdaCustomerExperience@mazdausa.com
5 жыл бұрын
Mine just exploded 6 months after the warranty expired. I've been offered 60% of the repair cost, and I've called Mazda to get another solution, because there's no way I pay a dime for a new transmission in a car with 18,000Km on it. US dealers might be better or worse about it, I don't know. The only consolation so far is that I'll get an v4 transmission.

Honest conversation about ownership of the MX-5. On paper the performance numbers look way too low for fun to be had, but for that small vehicle, that engine sounds like a hoot. Plus, with the top down, how fast do you really want to go?
@Runoratsu
@Runoratsu 6 жыл бұрын
Very fast. :D Actually, there's not much difference between 130kph/80mph and 210kph/130mph top down. Biggest change in wind noise and turbulence is between 65kph/40mph and 120kph/75mph, I'd say (at least in the NC).
@YasumotoUS
@YasumotoUS 6 жыл бұрын
In that car, I'd probably be driving between 40 - 75mph max and likely enjoying it quite a lot.
@Runoratsu
@Runoratsu 6 жыл бұрын
It's enjoyable at those speeds, too, yes, but why limit yourself (at least when you're in a country with higher speed limits ;) ). Although it's true, it IS more fun on winding country roads at 60mph than it is on the Autobahn at 130. That's just not it's natural habitat. Although even just with coilovers and good tires, it rides MUCH more stable at high speeds, making it feel a lot more at home there.

I've got a 2016 at 60k miles, so far the transmission still feels like the day I drove it off the lot. Keepin' my fingers crossed, lol. Going through 2 transmissions is quite shocking. I do see a lot of people who drive these shifting as if they have a super fast clutch like a Porsche PDK, and they don't allow the revs to fall each shift, especially going into 2nd gear--not sure if that could be a cause, but I imagine it's rough on the gears.

The Mazda ND transmission was designed for the 1.5 Liter 128 HP engine. Dave Coleman convinced Mazda executives after having a meeting with American Miata enthusiasts that the 2.0 Liter engine should be put into the US version of the car. The transmission design allows the 2.0 Liter engine to be used too. It wasn't designed for the 2.0 Liter engine. Adding a turbo or supercharger to a 2016 to 2018 engine is NOT SMART. So if you plan on Auto Xing or track days extended warranties should be part of the car purchase. Just my 2 cents worth ( owner of a 2016 Club soft top with the original transmission ).

Funny, no one ever mentions the Kappa series even though we are talking used sports cars on the cheap. The base models with stick are similar to the Miatas. The turbo versions (GXP / Redline) make an additional 90 HP and come with a stiffer suspension. A $200 reflash and your making around 300 at the crank. Add a $350 brace setup and keep high end tires on it. That's $600 plus your choice in tires and you have a car that dominates anything remotely close in cost. They are not easy to find but they are out there. I snagged a Solstice with 92 hundred miles on it for 12K 2 years ago. I reflashed and absolutely love it. I later added the brace kit and with great tires this thing is like it's on rails. With stock exhaust I can quietly outperform anything close yet still take trips hundreds of miles away and be comfortable. I've always liked the looks of the Miata and drove a couple but found the interior noise levels too high to consider taking trips with one.

Did Mazda company fix Miatas Transmission Problems after 2016 models. Did they redesign their transmission? Or is it the same after 2016? Cant seem to find anything on line concerning this Issue. Im starting to see how Miata owners are so into their cars that no one wants to touch on this Issue. I really like the car but with this design issue, no way in hell.

As a NC owner I thought that maybe I would get a ND well into the last production years. After hearing from many sources that a Mazdaspeed version is out, I would rather wait for a NE and hope that by then Mazda is still making manual transmissions......wishful thinking.

Your hallucinating. I own a 2016 Club & daily drive it everyday. The torque curve is very flat thru till just about redline ! Plus its 200 pounds lighter than your NC. I drive it aggressively too. The NC has actually more torque in the lower mid ranges than the ND2.

People who say the MX-5 is underpowered, are simply not the target customer. It's meant to be a fun sports car at and accessible price - yes you might want more power/speed, but this would all add to purchase price and running costs (fuel and insurance). If you have plenty of money, by all means buy something else (or 'upgrade' a standard MX-5), but for the target audience, this is a great car, at the right price.

Not sure using E-85 is a good idea. Manufacturer recommends no more than 10% alcohol, the amount present in oxygenated fuel. Alcohol is pretty harsh stuff on engine parts not designed for it. They do recommend 91 octane or higher which I don't recall ever seeing. All our stations have 87, 89 and 93.
