Bauer discontinuing the 4500 helmet was terrible for players but brilliant for their bottom line - now there are no cheaper helmet options so you can pay more!!!

the 4500 is more of a liability than anything. the reakt 65 is 90 bucks or less, which is essentially just the inflated 4500 price

Sherwood is able to offer lower prices because they own many of the retail stores where their products are sold, in Canada, they are owned by Canadian Tire, which also owns Sportchek (sporting goods store), and Prohockeylife (hockey specialty store). Rather than making the item for $100 and selling to retailers for $200 (and finally consumers for $400), they can simply sell at $200 retail or even more, to undercut Bauer/CCM.

Casual player, and getting back into beer league and slowly upgrading gear to stuff that’ll last awhile. I’ve had to remind myself that while most of my gear is from one certain company, I have no reason to only buy their stuff. If it’s from that maker and it fits me well and does what I want, great, but there are other options.

Totally agree with the warrior thing. From what I’ve seen they are very popular in pro and minor leagues as far as gloves and sticks. Tons of pros in the show are using warrior gloves and in alot of college or U18 leagues they have a sponsorship with them and those teams get warriors gloves and sticks. I haven’t tried any retail sticks or gloves from them but I have two pro stock sticks and one pair of gloves all from the Canucks and I will say their pro stock equipment is top notch and better than some other brands I’ve tried.

My College team switched from CCM to Warrior simply because it is cheaper, not because it's better; because it's simply not. Not talking about retail, we get to choose flex, kick point, shaft, stick length, stick weight, what finish, grip, blade length, pattern, lie, blade finish, stiffness, etc. Still liked CCM better. Worth mentioning I played in a junior league that used Bauer and I loved it. Only positive now is that I can use Bauer skates since Warrior doesn't make any we have freedom in that regard.
@benegan7421

I think that when it comes to skates and performance, it’s always variable. For example I was using Bauer skates for some years, then I switched to CCM and then a couple years later once again, I switched back to Bauer. But I felt that despite the size being the same, the runner length was shorter with the Bauer skates and I had less reach with my feet when pushing off. So I needed to put more effort into my strides because of some lost distance of travel in each stride which meant I was burning more energy to compensate. My other thoughts were also: - Because the skate is newer and has a new runner on it, there would be more curvature, compared to the CCM’s I had which had a runner that had been worn down a little bit (but not replaced) over the years. - I could go and get the profile adjusted to try and have a bit more contact with the ice which suits my movement better - It’s just a shorter runner and I should just adapt to that.

As an entry-level young adult player from Italy, where there are barely any hockey shops nearby, I have to admit that CCM and Bauer are usually the most accessible brands. I think I've only seen a True stick IRL once, and Warrior protectives a couple of times. I always wanted to try some new brands or gear, but the easiest way for me to do so would be to fly to some other country and buy things there. I don't have the expertise nor the guts to spend so much on something I don't know and cannot try beforehand ;)

Bauer did not ruin Easton, Easton ruined itself. I worked at a local mom and pop hockey store from the late 90's until the owner retired and closed shop in the mid 2010's. All the employees were current or former jr/college players. Our store was part of a r & d program with several of the big companies, including Easton. Essentially, we got free sticks from the reps to test out and provide feedback. If one broke, we sent it back with a summary report. Easton dominated the stick market in the 90's and early 2000's. They were the trailblazer with aluminum and composite shafts. When one piece composites hit the market, Easton still led the way but all the one piece sticks were garbage. Those silver synergy and black stealth sticks were awful. We would break the blades off in warm ups after a couple clappers. But it didn't matter. Easton was THE stick company. Bauer, ccm, sherwood, rbk, montreal and mission didn't even come close to volume of sales in comparison to Easton. Easton as a company was going through a reorg and wanted to drop hockey. Bauer swooped in and bought it solely for the stick tech. You gotta remember Bauer was not a big player in the stick market yet. So did Bauer ruin Easton? I guess if you mean they made the brand go away. But, did that mean CCM ruined jofa, canadien, and koho?

I agree that Warrior is so slept on. They literally just came out with the lightest stick ever made and nobody cared. Their Alpha ONE helmet is perfect, it fits everyone and the BOA system is so good. I manage 2 shops and I don't know if even I consider Sherwood and legitimate brand. Warrior to me is a huge brand that just gets no love. They offer everything, where Sherwood doesn't, they have a full range of sticks, but that's it.. So many kids say they would never use Warrior and it's simply because they don't want to be different.

Expensive does not necessarily mean better. I had custom Bauer 2S Pro skates, they were very expensive. I took skating lessons for two years to improve my skills. Several years later I bought True TF9 skates, and my skating improved significantly. I can now do edgework drills such as powerpulls and crossrolls far better with the True skates. The difference is insane. I have more power, more control, more agility, That’s because the Trues are a much better fit for my feet. Yup, Bauer custom are really stock skates tweaked a bit. They suit some people, but not all. And most of the features are suspect marketing spiel. As for pads, I wear top end Bauer, because I value protection. I’m sure pads from other manufacturers are good too. As for sticks, I just get last seasons sticks on discount, half price suits me. Oh, and a piece of old carpet to stand on in the changing room, to keep me toes dry and warm. Bliss.

Working in the hockey retail space, I have access to all these top end sticks at cost and 99% of the time I pick the 2nd price point they are fantastic and most of the time they are the same top end stick as last year just dressed different. Sherwood especially there 2nd price point sticks are literally identical to the top end stick -10 to 15 g in the weight not only does Sherwood make some of the best if not the best sticks on the Marcus the second price point is extremely affordable

I liked the industry better when there were more companies and more choices. So many have been bought up and killed off in the past 15 years. Also as a lover of the classic 4 roll glove, I hate the majority of the gloves on the market nowadays. My favorite is Eagle. Still made in Canada and a custom glove is less than $200 U.S. Last, why is it so hard to find the 'PM9' curve?

For me, the bauer is trash take is a very good take. Being an equipment manager and having used and dealt with top end gear from Bauer and CCM, and even some warrior pro stock sticks, Bauer’s product has gone down hill the past 5-7 years, where as brands like CCM and warrior have gotten much better. I find Bauer skates break down much quicker than CCM skates, and the fly-ti steel SUCKS. The school I work for is actually going through the process of signing an equipment contract right now as we do not currently have one, but have a handshake agreement with Bauer. Their customer service is awful and their products are just not up to the standards to what warrior and CCM are today. Granted I almost strictly deal with pro-stock and custom products but even something like the react 150, personally I don’t like compared to my 910 from CCM, which I can confirm has been fixed with the upcoming react 155 helmet. I could go on but for the sake of the comment length, I will stop it here.

I'm a huge fan of Bauer, especially their skates. Despite trying various brands, I consistently find myself returning to Bauer Vapors. While I acknowledge they might have eased off a bit as a brand but as you mentioned, their substantial contributions to hockey make them trendsetters. The silver lining in Bauer taking their foot off the gas is that it opens up space for companies like Sherwood, True, and Warrior to unleash their creativity, innovate, and carve out a more prominent presence in the hockey scene. I hope to see the above companies i listed have a more significant presence in the hockey world.

Protective... Yes. The top rated helmets on the VT testing list are just about all discontinued and every newly released helmet tests WORSE than the discontinued helmets. Yes maybe they're lighter or more comfortable, but for a youth player who isn't risking their health in exchange for a big paycheck or contract, protection is more important than branding and style. All of the latest helmets are garbage for real concussion and TBI prevention, and hockey is over a decade behind other high-impact sports where it comes to helping reduce repetitive impact injuries to the brain.

Bad hot take on the psychological issue on higher spec making you play better. My goal would be to kick ass with a shitty product and you’re the reason why there is enhancement in your play. I used to play with someone that had the oldest skates. Nothing stopped this dude. That level of play when the product is decent but your play is epic, in my perspective, that’s the best player out there. Marketing and great product does assist in this psychological warfare. Afford what you can, save your money, mindset and attitude is everything.
