The Worst Job In Hip Hop 🤫

For years now, ghostwriting has been hip-hop’s worst kept secret. Everyone knows it happens and yet no one truly wants to acknowledge that it’s happening or stand up and be counted to say that they are the ones who keep these secret rhyme scientists in business. This creates serious problems for ghostwriters.

Not only am i a huge hip hop fan but i am a huge fan of lyricists but to be honest if i found out that some of my favorite hip hop artists such as Tupac, Nas, Lupe, Common, AZ, King Crooked I, Kendrick, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, DMX, ROYCE DA 5'9, Jay-Z, Biggie, Eve, Foxy Brown (people have said they seen her wrtite her own raps) & any of the members of the WU Tang Clan had ghost writers i would definitely be surprise but it wouldn't bother me that much, and i would still think and feel that they are amongst the greats of hip hop who write their own raps.

I started rapping as a “ghost writer” for my whole little crew. I’m very introverted, and it just worked better for me. I went on to write and record my own stuff, and to write for other locals (no one big, I’m not fake flexing here) and, TBH - I always liked playing the back better. So, that said and bias stated - I don’t hate that so many raps are ghost written. I mean, so were a lot of great Soul, R&B, Rock, and Country songs. As far back as MoTown, there were always in house writers. Early Hip-Hop labels we were the same way. Ice Cube write all of the early N.W.A. songs and did a damn good job. In all, I think there are a lot of unfair doubles standards when Hip-Hop is compared with other genres. These days it’s gone so far that dudes get shamed for just writing their lyrics out before hitting the booth. At some point we need to end the narrative that all raps are autobiographical, they never have been. Ultimately, people look to music for entertainment and an escape. Some people are nice with the pen, and some are more presentable, outgoing, or better performers, so - they deliver it better. It takes all kinds. Just my two cents though, no hate, and I see the validity of other opinions too.

Eminem, Xzibit , Kurupt, Ice Cube, Kendrick, Kurupt…. These are his normal writers. But Dr. Dre isn’t out there telling people he’s a goat lyricist he’s never kept it a secret that he’s a a producer and a performer, but he’s never lied about the ghost writing stuff. When snoop was younger and he used to do most of his writing but today if someone comes to him with a verse, he’s not really competing to be the best rapper of the day anymore so he’ll go ahead and do it sometimes but snoop will still write his own shit at times. Drake appears to have written some of his songs but not any of his hits. So if we’re going to keep it 100 yes Drake has written some of his own songs but usually the ones you skip over on the album.

Ghost writing is trying to trick people into thinking you're an MC. If someone helps you with a verse here or there, cool.. credit then then they're not a ghost writer. Someone writing a whole song and you trying to pass it off like you wrote it will never be accepted nor will ghost writing in rap.

I think the problem is we think rappers and lyricists are same. The other issue with drake in particular is that a lot of his songs don't sound like him. Yeah jayz and Eminem wrote for dre but it sounded like dre. Dre wasn't sounding like he from new york or detroit he sounded like he from cali. Dre also isn't considered a great lyricist. If drake stopped trend riding and pretend gang banging and focused on his own style and sound he wouldn't be getting "exposed" for not writing

Snoop said it perfectly tbh. As long as you can still prove you’re a top tier lyricist then it shouldn’t matter, just cause you can spit good, don’t mean it’s gonna be a good song.

Ghost writers are a huge part of rap because rap is like the new pop music. For me, music is about the soul and emotion that goes into the lyrics and melody and the artist that represents that. If you have someone else writing for you then you are just using someone else's vision and emotion and putting your own twist on it. That's fine if that all you care about is a catchy beat and a hook but I can only respect real musicians and lyrics written from personal experience.

I remember a story T Pain shared about how he used to write lyrics for Kanye and help him with some of his songs. And one time he tried to demo some tracks for him, Kanye listened to them, stopped during a particular part and told T Pain not to put that line in the song because it was corny, but T Pain does it anyway because he liked the line even if Kanye thought it was corny. But then not too long after, Kanye drops a track with that line in his song and its like wtf? Dude tried to get him not to use it so he could steal it and use it for himself. And nobody ever talks about all the artists in Kanyes own sweat shop. But I guess because people consider him more of a producer now anyway.

Being a producer/artist myself, I have never let another person write for me. I feel records have no meaning when you have the artist rapping someone else's life situations and not their own. Nothing authentic about it. For example: "Rapper" records a song they're Ghostwriter writes, ghostwriter's wife being his motivation an inspiration behind the track (hope this makes sense 😂)

As somebody who gave up on wrapping for a while and is now trying to get back into it, I'll say that I can understand if you are an artist getting a specific type of flow that you then write for, but I don't approve of getting a lot of your stuff re or pre-written. A bar here or there is fine, but in general it should be your pen. That being said, I understand why Ghostwriters are necessary. Imagine you pen something that is coming from the heart and you got the flow down and everything but nobody wants to hear it. That's the sad reality of why Ghostwriters are important
