As a makeup artist I ALWAYS recommend this. If the lighting is slightly off it’s really easy to mismatch foundation even if you know what you are doing. These people at Sephora are doing their best but their lighting is horrendous for color matching.

The MUA fails triggered bad memories 😅 For our college ball in the 2000s I went to a MUA at a nail salon in a mall for a smokey eye look. I knew something was wrong when she didn’t allow me to see the mirror (I guess it was a ‘trust the process’ vibe) and then started *pumping the mascara* vigorously, which even then I knew was bad. She kept boasting about how she went to this really expensive makeup school. When she was done I looked like a beginner drag queen (which wasn’t what I was going for). I went to the mall bathroom to see if it really was that bad and shed many tears which I dabbed away because I’d paid for this mess, dammit! A random lady in the bathroom comforted me and said it wasn’t so bad so I wore it and friends…it was. I hate looking at those pics now. If only we had KZbin and Robert back then, I’d (a) have attempted it myself or (b) been more confident to speak out!

ohhhhh my god i understand you so well! i used to wear a lot of makeup and all the sales assistants AND a toxic friend i had at the time who was a trained makeup artist would always try to get me to wear pink foundations bc "i have red undertones". i do NOT. i have OLIVE undertones which are in fact green which is the OPPOSITE of red but i have acne and sensitive skin on my face so it's just always red. my skin flushes easily too and it's still not my undertone. it's so annoying

The hack where you use a sticky eye primer as a regular primer on problem areas has saved me so many times. I put eye primer under my eyes and in the corners of my nose to keep my concealer from creasing, and on any acne spots I want to cover. Primer hides the texture and concealer hides the discoloration.

That's a really good tip for trying different foundation colors. It took me forever to figure out my undertone and color. I’m SO glad you brought up there is a difference between being good at makeup on your self and then other people, people tell me all the time I’m very good at makeup by seeing how I do mine, then they ask me to do it on them and I’m no pro so I don’t have the experience doing it on others, and I’ve done maybe 2 people in my whole life and I personally don’t think I’m that great on other people, I tell them that too and they ask “why would you not be good on me?” 😑 because it’s different doing it on other people as opposed to yourself that’s why… I personally don’t like doing other peoples only because I’m afraid it’ll come out like some of these and be very bad, I don’t have the experience, I touch my face too much bc I have a shakey hand, etc. I’d personally just rather do my own only. Otherwise I’d 100% be a makeup artist and take courses.

Remember going to get my makeup done for prom back around 2004-2005, and the woman talking about having the right foundation to cover my freckles to give a “smoother base” … and my mom asking her if she was going to apply it on my shoulders because I had just as much there, and her saying “now why would I do that? freckles on shoulders seems natural” and my mom looking so confused at me like wtf then why cover them on my face lol It’s so weird to see them become a ~trend~

my freckles are coloured like those little caramel candies, some are a bit lighter but they’re generally close to that shade. i’m extremely pale so they do stand out quite a bit on my skin and everyone on my dads side has freckles and i have never seen dark freckles, only ever like a few shades down in foundation, but definitely all warm tones like you said

Trying on foundoution is still a thing. Few weeks back I spend quite some time trying to get the right color, was never satisfied before and went someplace else. They had me in a chair, apply 3 with different undertones, checked mirror and in the store/outside, adjusted to what I thought wasnt right. Felt amazing that they took that time for me as a customer and werent like 'you are a man use this and give me your money'
