The WORST of SpongeBob? | Reviewing the MoBrosStudios Top 20 Worst SpongeBob Episodes (Part 1)

Hi, everybody! Many years ago, when I was known by a different name, I made a couple videos complaining about some SpongeBob episodes I didn't like. Now, as a student studying animation, I'm renewing myself as an animation reviewer to practice looking at animations critically. And to premiere this new channel, I'm giving those 20 episodes a re-evaluation.

The "Best Day Ever" song is much better in the full version (which is in the credits of the Spongebob Squarepants Movie). It ends up being less repetitive thanks to having actual verses.

How did I not know about this? I watched the movie so many times. Guess it is because I never bothered to watch the credits past the ocean man song. But wow I never knew that the song had been written and fully recorded years before the special was aired.

The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie DVD was to my knowledge the first thing I ever purchased with my own money, and I've watched it many dozens of times over the years. The song "You Better Swim" by Motorhead that plays in the background of the Thug Tug also has a full version on the movie's soundtrack, and it's a banger.

+BonaFIDE From a writing standpoint, a scene like that would be put in to set up for something that would happen later. Since it didn't lead to anything, I counted it as a point against the episode.

+BonaFIDE It seems like most of him not being able to laugh was placebo effect; he couldn't laugh because he seriously thought he lost the ability to. Although that doesn't explain him being unable to laugh that one time. The reason for that is anyone's guess.

Nice to see that you're reviewing again, but now you're taking it with more of a professional level. I honestly liked Krusty Dogs, even with the flaws, since as you said it it's one of those rare moments in seasons 5-8 that have Spongebob Squidward and Mr Krabs act like their normal selves.

22:55-22:57 - Oh, you haven't seen anything yet. The Splinter is not the cruelest SpongeBob torture episode. If, you thought that was mean spirited to SpongeBob, if you do change your mind with the fan edition, you'll see that WhoBob WhatPants is way more mean spirited. It's only 5 minutes and I don't remember if I saw it, but seeing some painful clips made me stay away. *SpongeBob accidentally runs into Patrick and it ruins his mother's birthday cake* Patrick: Idiot Boy! *SpongeBob accidentally spills water onto Sandy's robot* Sandy: Idiot Boy! *SpongeBob accidentally deep fries Mr. Krabs and his money gets burned* Mr. Krabs: IDIOT BOY!!!!!!! Rea Pernis It's more fo a fact than anything. Spongebob was nothing more than a huge wuss (like he has been in most after-movie season decayment episodes) in Whobob Whatpants. What the others did to him was nothing. It was as bad as THe Best Day Ever. The only episode were you can really feel bad for Spongebob and were he didn't deserved what he got at all was THe Splinter. And Squidward + Patrick torturing him wasn't any better.

I like where this is going and I love your calm attitude about the whole thing. You raise a lot of good points here, and I'm looking forward to part 2. I find it odd you didn't mention the strange mental breakdown scene in the last one though. It's not only probably one of the strangest scenes of the episode along side Spongebob's heavy breathing, but it just comes off as strange how just a few seconds later he's happily accepting living in Spongebob's pineapple house replica of his own place. (You'd think he'd end up in the nuthouse after that experience) Also found it odd you didn't bring up the subliminal adult humor in the Krusty Dog episode. (Ex: The "weiner thing blowing up in his face" joke) My brothers still start snickering at that one. Regardless again I really enjoyed this analysis and I'm looking forward to the next part.

+Turtwig Champion You're right, that sequence at the end of "Squid's Visit" was probably the weirdest scene. Now that I'm thinking about it, it almost seems like a nod to old horror movies that always ended on cliffhangers. In terms of the plot, it seemed like Squidward passed out from shock but was over it by the end of the day, seeing as how the last scene takes place at night while the break-down happened earlier in the day. Plus it probably helped that SpongeBob offered to stay in the rubble of Squidward's house (assuming that's how that went). I think the "wiener thing blowing up in his face" is one of the better innuendo jokes to come out of post-film SpongeBob. It may not be the most subtle, but Squidward delivering the line in a serious manner helps make it funny (it also helps that he's talking about the Krusty Dog mania as a whole, rather than saying something like "I hope a weiner blows up in Krabs's face"). Other episodes would be so tactless as to put mayo on the weiner SpongeBob does blow up. All in all, I'm glad folks are enjoying this!

Never thought about the weiner like that. That's a pretty smart call. As for Spongebob letting him stay, my question is why would Squidward accept? It's only a temporary escape from reality, as well as due to the sequence of events that took place Spongebob in a way did cause the fire that burned down the house. He MADE him come over in the first place, and somehow never noticed that Squidwards house DID catch on fire or try to alert him in some way. It's not to say Squidwards not at fault either as he did have the idea to leave something cooking while leaving the house, but regardless I think he probably would have blamed Spongebob for everything and not wanted to talk to him or even see him for a long time. So it's kinda strange that he'd so gladly accept really anything from Spongebob afterwards, let alone staying in the house of the creeper that just redesigned it to be his own house, and caused the destruction of the original right next door.

+Turtwig Champion Hm, I see what you're saying. It would be more in Squidward's character to use his house burning down as an excuse to get the blazes out of town and away from SpongeBob for good. That is, unless he didn't have the finances to move away and deemed the replica a favorable alternative to being homeless. I suppose the missing piece to this whole story happened between the last two scenes, so it's entirely up to speculation as to why Squidward made the decision he did.

The reason SpongeBob was popular in the first place was because, unlike other cartoons like Hey Arnold!, CatDog and Rocket Power, SpongeBob wasn't cynical. I find it amazing how most animation network shows today are influenced by SpongeBob's optimism, while the original show ended up sometimes becoming quite mean-spirited on occasion. ;))

The Best Day Ever song was originally a song on the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie soundtrack album but then the people who were running the show after the first movie were all like "hey you know what that song that we used before on the SpongeBob movie album we should make whole episode based on that, after all no one probably even knows it was on the album in the first place"

In Squid's Visit they could have added a character like the boy from Phineas and Ferb who obsesses over the two inventors. Maybe would've helped the show in the long run

Yeah, then it would’ve legitimately worked as a chilling episode without portraying Spongebob (as Anim8ball accurately put it) like a serial killer. Having a guy that just seems to be a big fan, then when Squidward is invited for a visit, have the shocker that the guy’s house is renovated to look exactly like Squidward’s house, and then have the episode play out the same, except have the crazy guy’s house get burned down and then have him move away, with him ominously saying that he’ll be back. I know this is a comedy show, but if you wanna make a legitimately creepy episode, this would’ve been the best way to do it. And also, have the maniac act pretty normal at first, then slowly reveal his obsessive nature, and maybe even make some references to famous psychological thrillers and horror movies, like Psycho or The Birds, like when Squidward sees his bathroom, show that the guy is somehow spying on him, without Squidward knowing.
