Taboo Tuesday and Cyber Sunday didn't do good buy rates because people probably didn't want to pay money for matches they didn't know were confirm or not. Like if it was Triple H vs either Jeff Hardy, Kozlov, or Hardy and Kozlov, you buy the ppv for 60 bucks and then Vince decides to manipulate the fan vote so the match is Triple H vs Kozlov for the title.

You gotta remember 2002-2003 was a massive exit for many fans. The attendance, ratings all went down. The attitude Era fad in America was over. You mix in fans who tried yo stick around were greeted with a company name change. Rock and Austin both leaving amd inconsistent on TV, the draft brand split turned away ppl, pushing new stars in 02. It lead to mass Viewership turn off. So by the time WrestleMania comes around, for 1 month and a half they build up Mania around 4 guys that aren't even sticking around much post Mania.

Just a few days ago even I was going deep into these PPV numbers. One thing I noticed that if you aggregate all the PPV buys then the superstars(in main event) with most PPV buys were(No rumble). HHH - 21.8M Cena - 18.3M Taker - 16.4M Rock - 15.1M Austin - 13.6M HBK - 12.5M These were the ones with more than 10m buys in total. Ig Hogan can also hit 10m if we count in wcw and closed circuit from the 80s. Also first I thought that HHH is at the top just because of being in the peak era and having a long career but when noticed I saw the PPVs in after attitude Era which had HHH in main event were better performing than the others.

One of my memories as a young wrestling fan was my parents buying my brother and I Battleground 2013 on PPV. The main reason they did was because it was in my hometown but my parents were not into wrestling at all. The only one who would’ve been available to take my brother and I that day was my mom and she really didn’t want to sit through it and spend the $70 a piece to get decent tickets, so as compensation they bought us the PPV. As a kid I loved the show just bc I have that memory of it. The rhodes vs shield match is definitely the only match I can really go back and watch now but at the same time it’s a fond memory for me so it always has a special place in my heart

When it comes to WM 19, another issue that hurt buys was that some parts of the USA still did not have UPN(which aired Smackdown) until later that year, and only had access to Raw. That left HHH/Booker and Rock/Austin 3 to drive fan interest and it didn't work. Upn would not be able to reach a lot more US homes until late 2003.

@@DougieYT Context matters here, both for the Rock and PPVs in general. And indeed, great shows don't always correlate with great business. Business was cooling down significantly in 2003, the Monday night wars were over, many ECW and WCW fans never came over, and many casuals had left around 2001, partially due to 9/11 leading to major shifts in culture. The Rock was in a bit of an awkward spot around 2003, with remaining fans being miffed that he was leaving for Hollywood and him not being as big on the global stage as he had been in 1999/2000 or would be again later. In 2011, the Rock finally came back after 7 years, now being an established A-llister in Hollywood and just coming off the majorly successful Fast 5. And he challenged Cena, the guy who had become the face of the company and stabilized them during the PG era. It was going to make big money, no matter how shitty it may have been.

The Monday night wars had ended, with many ECW and WCW fans never switching over to WWE, many casuals left around 2001, partially because 9/11 lead to a huge shift in culture and society, Austin had been out for like 8 months before he came back briefly and was about to retire, the Rock was about to leave for Hollywood for good. The entire buildup and marketing being centered around Vince vs Hogan instead of Rock vs Austin or either of the title matches probably didn't help either. Business simply wasn't as hot as it has been from like 1995 to 2001.

Bray Wyatt (with Luke Harper and Erick Rowan) defeated Kane in a Ring of Fire match (The opening match to start the Main Show) (3.) Cody Rhodes defeating Damien Sandow (4.) Alberto Del Rio (c) beating Christian to retain the World Heavyweight Championship (5.) Natalya (with Cameron and Naomi) beat Brie Bella (with Nikki Bella and Eva Marie) (6.) I think it's just a lot of stuff coming together, not all of it in WWE's control or their fault. The Monday Night Wars were over, ECW and WCW were no more, many of their fans were never going to switch over to WWE, even if they hadn't botched the Invasion angle and used the WCW stars better. 9/11 had a profound impact on society and the "zeitgeist" at the time, either enforcing or accelerating cultural changes away from the edgy 90es, which was a major factor for the big boom in the 90es. Austin was out with 1,5 feet and about to retire, the Rock was about to leave for Hollywood for good, many casuals had left around 2001.

I don't know how much this comtributes to overall sales, but back in 2011 we got PPV's for free on Sky Sports in the UK, I remember watching Elimination Chamber, Money In The Bank and Vengeance in full so maybe UK sales were effected by that. Also, Wrestlemania 27 has to be the worst PPV purchase our family ever made.

Bragging Rights 2010 will always have a place in my heart. I was going through trauma at that time and a lot of details from 2009-2012 blend together. I actually went to Bragging Rights as a HUGE Cena fan. It took place in Minneapolis during the Viking/Packer game, which my dad and I recorded and watched when we got home. We were up until like 1 and since it was Sunday he let me skip school the next day. Looking back part of me wishes the Nexus angle turned out different. But a bigger part of me is glad teenage me has a positive memory from that hard time.

The reason Survivor Series 02 did so badly is because WWE's TV writing had dipped so dramatically in quality from 2001-2002. 02 was a big year for turning fans off the product.

I'm not shocked that the stuff from the mid-00's to the mid 10's were in the lowest buy rates because WWE were putting on like 60-70% garbage or boring stuff with 30-40% stuff worth watching. Also, anything that started out good had a guaranteed dip in creative quality at some point during that time. I'm not surprised Vengeance 2011 had low buyrates because the tv leading up to it often had fans being like "Are they gonna f*** us? They're gonna f*** us, aren't they." and that show managed to not.

Early '97 would've been better for WWF if Bret's popularity as a babyface wasn't waning and Shawn wasn't "injured" (he faked getting hurt to avoid putting Sid over). Bret turning heel and Shawn's return to forming DX helped the company a little bit

I think the big takeaway here is that great PPVs don't always correlate with great business, and that there are a lot of factors going into it, which aren't always directly in WWE's control or their fault. The contrast between WM 19 and 27 illustrates this good. WM 19 is amazing on paper, but it came at a point in time when business was on a major downward spiral. The Monday night wars were over, many ECW and WCW fans never came over while many casuals left around 2001, partially due to cultural changes caused by 9/11. Austin and Rock, the faces of the AE, were both out with 1,5 feet, with this indeed being their final match. Cena, Batista, Orton, Brock and more weren't as over/big as they would be later. RAW becoming the Triple H show and WM 19 being centered around Vince vs Hogan instead of Rock vs Austin or either of the title matches probably was the final nail in the coffin. In contrast, WM 27 had the Rock effect. Him finally coming back after 7 years, now a certified A-lister, brought back many old fans as well as new casual fans. And him challenging Cena, who had become the face of the company for the PG era, was gonna make big money no matter what. I think people also tend to overestimate the impact certain events had on business. I love the pipe bomb, for example, but it barely left the wrestling bubble, so I'm nor surprised it didn't have the same impact as Hogan being in Rocky 3, Tyson being at WM14 or the Rock being literally everywhere in 2000. Overall, I'm not surprised that PPVS from the mid 90es, mid 2000s and early 2010s tend to do the worst, as that were time periods where the business was down in general, and the product sucked overall. Around 2010 was also where illegal watches were the highest if recall correctly. So WWE ditching classic PPVs for streaming was definitely the right call.
