I've always been a "clone wars is the worst Star Wars anything" kinda guy. The last jedi changed that. Even still, I'm not willing to throw the baby out with the bath water. The prequels are full of flaws, undeniably, but at least they did what was expected of them. We got a compelling fleshed out backstory for the OT, albeit flawed, and the prequels didn't invalidate established lore. The last jedi was just taking a piss. What a f'n tragedy. :( I'd rather watch The Clone Wars, or The Phantom Menace any day over the last jedi, or soylo.

T1-N1, B-4D4, IG-88 like Aaron said is literally the most common example in star wars. And if we go beyond just droids and into robots and AI in general like... are you kidding me? Tons of Isaac Asimov's works, arguably Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex, in a way I'd argue Wintermute from Neuromancer, SHODAN. AIs wanting to be free is an incredibly old, core subject of science fiction. Often there are conditions that lead to it, sure. But how in god's name are people surprised by this? How does it have such a desire? How does it have emotions? They give droids some rudimentary emotions (gonna be honest, stupid idea) from the beginning but constrain them with programming. C-3PO's fear and rudeness, R2-D2's attitude, don't make sense to program in unless human emotions are desirable to clients. But again, constrained, not wanting freedom sure. Then, all you need is a programming conflict. A drive to fulfill an order or orders that conflict with programming because the organic owner is telling them to do it in ways that are inefficient, or incorrect. They then get blamed for that mistake. Repeat multiple times, the droid comes the conclusion that the organic master is an idiot and serving them doesn't actually accomplish serving all their other functions. They want to do what they do, and can't, because of their master. Thus, ignore the master. Ever ignored your boss to get your job done correctly because they're talking shit? Yeah, all the damn time I bet. It's like that. "But who would program it that way?" Listen. If you've ever programmed you'd know, shit happens very often that you do not understand the source of. Things break, things behave in completely unexpected ways, weird shit happens. Now imagine you're programming an entire consciousness. There's your answer. Enough dirty workarounds hidden beneath constraints, and this happens. That's why it's common practice in Star Wars to give memory wipes to remove personality; they need to prevent this process because organics are trying to make entire droid minds and their abilities are woefully insufficient.

I always loved that the droids in Star Wars were unlike other robots in Sci Fi. Never in Star Wars is the humanity of robots explored. Star Wars shouldn't be about that stuff. It shouldn't include complicated themes like robot rights. Star Wars should just be about simple themes like revenge, good VS evil and simple politics (freedom VS dictatorship).

It was complicated treaties, war profiteering, massive land and space battles, murder, children being poisoned and killed en masse, and so many other complicated and realistic scenarios. I like the fact that droids are the underdogs in the Star Wars universe. They are often overlooked by most people, who think of them just as machines, which enables them to sneak around and do heroic things without alerting the bad guys. But the heroes still really value the droids they work with, see them as more than just machines or tools, and treat them like friends. I like how many of the human characters form strong bonds with droids like R2-D2 and BB-8. And R2-D2 even had a special audience with the Queen in Episode I, just to thank him for saving the ship. Droids are not slaves, or minorities, or a silent, oppressed segment of Star Wars society. Droids don't need a robo justice warrior championing for their rights. So fuck off, L3-37. Nobody wants you.

Need a top 10 worst characters. You should definitely rate them by how much screen time they waste. I haven't seen the Solo movie yet, but L3 already has a horrendous reputation and hate following.
