Every promise of a new tax break or credit is meaningless to them . My clients don't have the band width to pursue a bureaucratic "benefit". They need immediate, tangible solutions that are easily accessible. Trump isn't gonna give them anything, but they see the Dems as equally careless, sitting on their lofty perches. "They need immediate, tangible solutions ..."? How about Medicaid, how about SNAP, how about the child tax credit? I don't know if those programs are easily accessible, if not, government should fix that. But if the people in poverty can't find the time or energy to learn which candidate is working to make their lives and their children's lives better, why should anyone waste time encouraging them to vote? I only have a gut feeling on this, no data, but I suspect most poor people didn't vote for Trump, they just didn't vote. Either way their lives will likely be much worse under Trump than Harris. I doubt the vote or non-vote from poor people had a material impact on this election, but if they didn't even try I have very limited sympathy.

Just simply saying Trump is a bad person does not explain away the outcomes that people experienced first hand. Just declaring chocolate rations were "increased" from 4 to 3 grams is not fooling people. Democrats had 4 years after Trump and the outcomes are worse. Voters are mostly not sophisticated and do not care whose "fault" that is. Democrats need to get outcomes for their voters as quickly and effectively as Trump does if they want to win.

We have to stop using the phrase “the economy” and start saying “the cost of living.” That’s what folks are talking about when they say the economy is their number one priority. Their personal cost of living. Rent, groceries, property taxes, the price of their small vices literally doubling. Dan Pfeiffer said it on this very podcast that if you’re worried about the cost of the food you put on the table, you’re not concerned about democracy. Stop saying “the economy is thriving and people are just too stupid to understand it.” Stop saying “inflation is down” when what people want is deflation. Stop talking about “the economy” and “inflation” when what people are talking about is *cost of living*. I am a non-college educated white voter who lives barely above the poverty line. I live paycheck to paycheck. I feel talked down to constantly by liberal talking heads. The amount of times this podcast talks about me like I’m not listening. Like I can’t comprehend anything they’re saying because I’m too stupid to understand. I was shocked yesterday when Erin on Hysteria expressed her desire to never associate with a non-college educated voter. The amount of times Jen on MSNBC talked about me like I wasn’t watching on election night was insane. You can’t talk down to people and then ask “why aren’t they on my side?” The way I’ve been talked about since Tuesday is making me want to leave the party. It’s truly feeling more every day like this is a party for the elites and people like me, a lifelong democrat, aren’t welcome here solely because I didn’t want to take out student loan debt after spending my whole life watching my mom dodge calls from debt collectors. Also, I know these being four wealthy white men is why this podcast is successful. It’s also the reason why they will never comprehend the extent of racism and sexism in this country. They’ve never experienced it. They can’t connect the dots that the reason people listen to them is because they’re wealthy skinny cis white men and that in this country, anything else makes you unelectable. I tried in the comments of this very podcast to warn that we weren’t talking about the economy in a relatable way. I got told I was stupid. I tried to say after this country wouldn’t vote for a white woman, it was going to be harder for them to vote for a black woman. I got told I was sexist and racist. After this election, I no longer feel welcome in this space. People don’t feel heard by Democrats. They feel alienated.

@ agreed, there are a lot of Bernie voters that crossed over to Trump for this reason. I do firmly believe though that we aren’t even discussing an agenda here in rural America at all at this point. It feels very much the narrative has been given to the “us vs. them” mentality. That’s our fault, I know personally I have stayed quiet for fear of losing friendships, family or even business at my small family farm. This election cycle definitely made me realize that we have to be stronger in our convictions and go where conversations aren’t always comfortable. And as a mother of an LGBTQ human, I agree we need to find our way back to common sense instead of sound bites in our politics. I hope we WILL and CAN support these amazing communities without playing into identity politics.

No. Dems did make one big mistake: they didn't broadcast Biden's and Kamala's achievements loud enough for people to hear, to understand and to accept. You don't need to distance Kamala from Biden. You need to show off their achievements in public. I remember seeing many people online saying Biden's economy was a mess. I had to educate them with actual data to show that Biden's economy was far better than Trump's. But I could only do so little online. Many regular people don't surf online to read political comments. They need other ways to get the correct information. Dems obviously haven't done enough work to get the important messages to them.

Agreed. The biggest factor in this election were those that are not politically engaged, but were negatively impacted *personally* (regardless of what national statistics may represent), voting against the incumbent party, and instead for "change". Trump will have gained about 4-5 million votes wheres Democrats lost near the same amount compared to last election. It's not going to come down to "campaigning", for these people. Political rhetoric is just fuzz to so many people. Many people flip red/blue because they don't have any loyalty to such. They don't attribute things to either, but want a "switch" when they feel distressed. This is the very fault of partisanship that focused so much on party. People will just vote "the opposite".

A few points I think that were missed: 1) Y'all owe Dean Phillips an apology. He started the process way too late, but he was absolutely right about President Biden and the lack of a real primary. 2) Democrats haven't engaged in a real primary since President Obama's first run. The run way was cleared for Secretary Clinton in 2016, for President Biden in 2020, and Vice President Kamala was the 2024 candidate overnight. For a party concerned about the process of democracy, the Democrats have done very little of it in the last decade. I've had many discussions about Democratic elites choosing their candidate by fiat and expecting everyone to fall into line. A real honest to god primary this cycle would have made a huge difference. @@scarletsletter4466 We're not blaming him for Dem failures, we're blaming him for not doing what was right by standing by what he said "Former President Trump’s actions preceding the riot were a disgraceful dereliction of duty." McConnell let Trump continue his grip on the GOP by not voting to bar him ineligible to hold office in the United States again. That would've made room for younger candidates such as DeSantis, Youngkin, Haley, Ramaswamy, Vance, etc., ones that didn't, as McConnel put it, engage in 'unconscionable behaviour'. However, for the loss, that is Biden's fault in my opinion, specifically for running for a second term and preventing any democratic candidate time to succeed him. Some minor blame can directed at Manchin & Sinema for sabotaging the economic agenda that was designed to help people. Garland was Biden's choice so that is another fault of Biden's.
