I was working at the Orlando Arena as an apprentice electrical maintenance technician back in 1995 when Van Halen came through on their Balance tour. It was a dream come true for me to work that night because like so many young guitar players in their 20’s back then, Eddie was my Hendrix. Anyway, Ed’s tech at the time came up to me asking if I had some 16 gauge wire handy so he didn’t have go to the truck to find his. They were running a little late at load in and he was trying to save time. He was replacing 2 blown speakers in one of Ed’s Peavey cabs and wanted to solder in all new wire while he was at it. I was excited to help. I was an Eddie gear nerd even back then trying to figure out his tone, like everyone was. I brought the wire to him at his bench and guess what I saw in Ed’s Peavey cabinets? Yep....Celestion Greenbacks! Older ones at that. Not a Sheffield 1200 to be found! I’ll never forget that afternoon. Great memories!

What I've found, when playing around with IRs, is that if you use a Royer R121 to mike up the Sheffield, it gives it a large bottom end boost which rounds the sound off nicely. I find it especially works for Gothic Doom where you have a lot of ambience going on, as it blends in well. I keep hearing these days the Celestion EVH is a «custom-made speaker for EVH». It's not: it's just the original Celestion G12M-67 Greenback Heritage Series with an EVH sticker on the back. Short story: when EVH wanted something closer to those old Greenbacks (or Blackbacks) he used to use, they sent him a few G12M Heritage to evaluate. And he was good, requiring no tuning. More recently, Celestion removed the G12M Heritage from their product line and kept just the EVH, but the old frequency charts and tech data can still be found on their website, besides being able to find online multiple interviews to Celestion representatives or engineers confirming they were the same speaker. Trying to contradict this fact, there were also tests «proving» they're different speakers. But there are also music production tutorials showing how 4 speakers of the same kind installed in the same 4x12 can sound vastly different. Fun fact: the Celestion EVH used to be sold cheaper than the G12M Heritage. People who knew and wanted the G12M Heritage just bought he EVH instead.

This was back in 2015 when I finally jumped up to a tube amp after playing solid state combos my whole life. Ive worked my way up to rectifiers and matching 2x12 cabs and can never go back to what I had, but I am grateful for having them when I did. I definitely prefer a v30, and while I do agree with your view that musicians should try new things, I also feel if its not broke dont fix it, mesa heads with v30s work, my band is more grunge/rock than we are metal, but it works. But that being said I love these fearless gear reviews they help a lot of people save time and money, however if on a budget and can get a used 5150 cab, id say go for it, it will get you by and it can always be worse. And when I got to original speaker out of the cabinet I saw it was a Sheffield speaker. And I'm quite happy with the cabinet now.

"Eruption" to "Why Can't This Be Love?" is 100% correct. (Although I would've used anything/everything from FAIR WARNING to really drive the point home; Van Hagar would not have even dared venture out on a "Mean Street"...)

One of the guitarists in my first band had a Peavey transtube head, and bought the matching cab with the sheffield speakers in it. ...just a fizzy mess. He sucked as a guitarist anyway, so that didn't help either. But I tried to work with it, and.... yeah, was the cab (I guess because of the sheffields). Blech

The guitarist in my current band uses a boss metal zone in front of the clean channel of his Orange head, into a garbage unbranded 4x12" that he stuck v30's in. Sounds absolutely atrocious and it's a shame because he's a really good player. Tried explaining to him that he should ditch distortion pedals and use a clean boost in front of his amp but he doesn't get it
@jsullivan21122 жыл бұрын
Transtubes were garbage, so in your case you were dealing with a shit head and a shit cab. Just a shit stack.

@howler91712 жыл бұрын
@@jsullivan2112 He doesn't need a distortion pedal at all, he already has the perfect amp for the style of metal we play. All he needs to do is switch over to the dirty channel, put a TS9 or a blues driver or some other boost in front of it and he would immediately sound better using the same gear he already has

I thought the Sheffield sounded absolute stunning by itself, nice grit to it. But yeah, as soon as the mix comparison kicked in, I knew absolutely, why you roasted that cabinet so hard. And what I heard in the comparison matched 100% with the impression I had a few years back when I regularly tried to like the Peavey cab (former guitar player in the band was a 5150 nuthead and had the MKI, MKII and the cab at his place, and I often played through his rig).

I also don’t hear a tremendous difference between the two and the arrangements aren’t exactly the same so the part with the slower chugging and the lead/octave chord I was using to compare the wetness isn’t there on the second speaker test. I think maybe in person though there’s probably an audible difference. I can believe that for sure

But Glenn, I loved hauling my big heavy shitty sounding ugly cab to gigs! It was a humbling experience and when I got a Marshall cab with gt75s it made me realize how much good tone I was missing out on….I really wanted to love my 5150 cab, but at the end of the day all I could do was look at it angrily and shake a middle finger at it.
@mkdawson19082 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! Back when the 5150 first came out, I built my touring rig with a rack mounted Peavey Classic 60 power amp and a Digitech tube preamp. One of the cabs I looked at was the 5150 4x12. It was horribly shrill. I didn't know much about speakers at the time except that Celestions were good, lol! But I figured I'd be safe with Marshall, so I tried a 1960a and it sounded pretty darn good with my racked rig. But the cab I ultimately went with was a lower-end Peavey 4x12 loaded with different Sheffield speakers - I don't recall if they were the 1290 or the 1230, but that cab sounded absolutely glorious (again - late 80s/early 90s context for metal tones!). That cab sounded nothing like the EVH 5150 cab.

At first, I thought it sounded fine, but when in the context of the mix, it sounded thin. And if it sounds thin even in the studio, imagine how it must be playing live

Depends on front of house and if there is a second guitarist in the band... if it sounds bad on stage the house mixer will just bury you behind the better sounding guitarist, haha.

Shefields ruined my perception of the 5150 to this day. I can't think of a 5150 and not associate it with the 'can of angry bees' sound of Sheffields. I'm old and got to try the 5150 on release. I walked away after 5 minutes thinking it was a buzzy POS, only to be shocked down the road at what a 5150 could do without Peavey speakers.

Hell, I love the 5150 as well as the 6505(that I bought as a replacement, when my 5150 got stolen), but it didn't take me long to replace the original Peavey Cabinet with, well simply, a standard Marshall cab(1960, I think). I'm not much of a nerd, when it comes to gear, but the sound difference between the Peavey and the Marshall cabinets was so massive, there was just no contest...

Certainly have run across people that didn't like the 5150 cab. I have a straight cab that I've used for a while and I've enjoyed the dark and tighter bottom end it can give as I run brighter amp tones so it balances out. Then when I mixed in a V30 with the out of favor Sheffield I found it works quite nicely.

I have the Peavey 4x12 that came with the Sheffield 1290s. It has the metal front cover. I have it matched with my ultra plus 120, except I swapped out 2 of the speakers for vintage 30s. Really happy with how they sound together. I'm using a little known pedal called the "amptweaker defizzerator" thru the fx loop to help with fizziness. It's my secret weapon. They're super hard to find which is weird.

I got a 5150 cab really cheap 15 years ago and came to the same conclusion. It's got Vintage 30s in it now. Pretty happy with it. I think the terrible speakers keep them cheap so if you've got some Celestions laying around you can make a nice cab out of it. But we have so many good, cheap cab options these days it's a little tougher to justify.

This explains why I've always seen people pair a 5150 with a Mesa oversized or rectifier cab. I played a 6505 today with the matching cab and while it didn't sound like complete shit I have definite heard better even coming from a 6505 or 5150.
