So I'm imagining that Mastermind was put in charge of equipment acquisition, and that's why he conjured up images of nazzzi esque troops. He'd already scored surplus equipment. Then when Magneto inspected the first few crates, Mastermind was one poor choice of words away from a very grisly end. After that, Magnus got a funny look in his eye and personally hauled a special crate off, talking about cleansing fire.
@redshirt04793 жыл бұрын
Okay, so armed freighters were a thing during WWII but they were often just given an outdated 3" or 4" gun in single open mounts for defense against submarines on the surface and some light AA guns to dissuade aircraft. Nothing compared to destroyers of the period Though even more confusing is the art for the ship. That isn't a destroyer or a freighter outside Santo Marco, I'm not entirely sure _what_ that is. The barrels on the turret at 12:38 is positively gigantic, at first glance they wouldn't be out of place on a battleship in terms of diameter but the barrels are _far_ too short (1) and are proportionally similar to some Age of Sail/Early Ironclad guns. But funnily enough, the page you skipped has the _right_ kind of gun on the appropriate mount and the overall design is consistent with a Liberty Ship, a cheap freighter design that was never meant to last more than 5-10 years (2) and was built with outdated triple expansion engines. I think Mastermind was projecting an illusion over the freighter. Otherwise that entire micro nation surrounded to a 18 year old (3), 11.5 knot, 14,000 ton freighter that has a single outdated 4" gun and some annoyance-grade anti-air defenses (4). (1) The blast wave from firing those guns would probably turn the organs of anyone standing where Magneto is to goop. (2) Though a number did last much longer... of course there were also a couple that did't even make it out of port before literally coming apart at the seams because of how fast they were being produced. Two weeks isn't exactly a lot of time for quality control. (3) The ship is identified as having been part of convoy duty, so therefore must be at least 18 years old in 1963. (4) By late 40s standards, by the 1960s they'd be beyond worthless.
@richmcgee4342 жыл бұрын
Ooh, I can play this game too. :) When you say some lasted longer than the projected 5-10 years, you're understating things. There are still five of them (out of a bit over 2700 built) operational, with the SS Jeremiah O'Brien in San Francisco, SS Lane Victory in Los Angeles, SS Red Oak Victory in Richmond CA, SS John Brown in Baltimore, and the SS American Victory in Tampa. As noted elsewhere, Kirby was a WW2 vet who served in Europe, and quite likely got there or back (or both) on a Liberty Ship, so it's not too surprising that he managed to draw one accurately on the skipped page. At the very least any GI who was ever near a East Coast or European port during WW2 would have gotten a look at a representative of the class at some point. Very nearly as ubiquitous at sea as jeeps were on land. The "Mastermind making an illusion of a supership" seems on point, with the more accurate art perhaps being the ship's real appearance from a reader-only perspective. Magneto sure wouldn't have had much trouble finding a Liberty to use within a couple of decades of the end of the end of the war, and I'd imagine having superhuman magnetic powers to help hold the welds together would improve reliability no end.

11:04 That village doesn't seem particularly medieval. It looks like a regular small european rural town from the sixties. Likewise, a sociologist studied the use (and warding off) of witchcraft in rural France in 1972, so it's not absurd that people would call Wanda a witch in whatever country she is supposed to be from. Though trying to murder her seems to be a bit exagerated. Then again, she has actual supernatural powers, unlike the "witches" of the real world. Also, the devil horns are an actual gesture of cursing (or warding off evil, depending of your region) in Europe (mostly Italy, rather than central Europe though), which is why metal appropriated it.

The bit about Wanda's village is actually not that surprising. There are still places in Eastern Europe where the locals truly believe in and fear Vampires.

Well, magnetism can do more than just attract metal. It can manipulate electricity and even light. It can also affect the human body, especially since a healthy diet could consist of minerals like iron, magnesium, and zinc.

I say the same thing when the mutants refer to themselves “homo-superiors”, and this is not just the villains saying this term, even the X-men will sometimes refer to themselves with this term that obviously looks down on humans.

Magneto is terrible at optics.

Pretty much. But the X-Men themselves didn’t do exactly a great job of helping fight fears against mutants themselves.

11:00 Dude, I live in Poland and I got the impression that a lot of creators (and people who sell stuff on ebay) actually believe that Central and Eastern Europe actually does look like it's stuck in the 1800s, similar how all of Italy is centered around the coliseum and all of France is around the Eiffel tower. Ironically "X-men Apocalypse" manage to capture the looks of 1980s Poland, but I think they based their dialect on XVII century literature.

11:26 Honestly, that village doesn't look medieval, but 18th century at best, and the fact that its people believe in witchcraft is more unbelievable than them having ancient houses.

Speedsters are game breaking. Yeah Pietro is no Flash, but he's still quick. That's probably why... A lot of people don't know what to do with him, either having him be a rather lackluster villain, or dead. So yeah, Quicksilver has always kind of had incest conotations. I kinda love when Sir Lovehaug does a rapid barrage of jokes. Okay, Magneto? Why do you keep Mastermind around? I don't think the illusions are worth it.

Kind of odd to see Pietro have the same moral hangups as Wanda. Wanda usually only went bad again due to some mental breakdown, while Pietro turns evil seemingly out of boredom.
