The story goes: They wanted a Sitar, eastern string instrument for the opening but for some reason the musician couldn't make it ... Jeff (Beck) said no problem I can play that sound on a guitar .... Jeff is one of the great guitar players (still playing) ... just didnt take to that often to the pop side of music that made others more famous ( He is the guitar payers guitar player ) .... The band is the birth place of great players. First they had Clapton. but they weren't blues y enough for him so he departed Enter Beck then they got Jimmy Page to play rhythm,... They Beck flew off for more creative pastures and Page moved to lead Guitar just before the band fell apart and Page picked up the pieces to form a little band named Led Zeppelin .....

One of the greatest and most innovative band ever. When I was 13-14 I listened to them constantly. Please react to Over Under, Sideways Down. A few of the members of this band achieved some success. YES, THANK YOU!!! Yardbirds are my 2nd favorite British Invasion Band. And you are right Chod, this band was a foundation band. The first wave (early 60's) with the Beatles, Stones, Animals, Yardbirds and Kinks. This band is most known for their famous lead guitarists - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, then Jimmy Page. However, my personal favorite is the wonderful, tragic singer/harmonica player Keith Relf. He was a very soulful singer (this isn't his best song) and a great harmonica player. All the more amazing in that he suffered GREATLY from severe asthma. According to his biography "Heart Full of Soul", he was never bothered by it when he performed, but when he finished, he was often brought to his knees, unable to breathe and had to carry an inhaler wherever he went. He tragically died very early when he was accidentally electrocuted by an improperly wired guitar. I love him best when he sings the blues I'm sure others will name their favorites - mine are "I'm A Man", "For Your Love" and later, "Over,Under,Sideways Down" with it's very distinctive guitar riff from Beck. Or "Dazed and Confused" years before Zeppelin covered it. The 2nd wave ('65-69) brought all the other invasion bands, including MY #1 Favorite invasion band, the utterly BRILLIANT Small Faces!! PLEEEZE introduce Dee to this soulful little band - How about a blind side with "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" (which has Hendrix's favorite guitar solo - so he said) or , if you want to MELT some girls heart's PLEEEZE, PLEEEZE, PLEEEZE their cover of Smoky Robinson's "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" - OMG !! Steve Marriott's (18 yrs old) singing will rip your heart out - SOOO soulful! 10X better than the original. Thank you for your consideration (-:

The Yardbirds are one of the great early English rock bands from the 60's. The band is known for starting the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck. The Yardbirds had a lot of great hits including "For Your Love", "Shapes Of Things", "Over Under Sideways Down", "I'm A Man", "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago", "Train Kept A-Rollin'", "I Ain't Got You" etc.

A Yard Bird is an old Black slang term for the common chicken, generally after being prepared as a meal. Often used by the old Blues Greats like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker. The Yardbirds band were greatly influenced by old Delta Blues/Chicago Blues.

Here's a cool fact for everyone who doesn't know, Heart Full Of Soul was originally done as a sitar version by a couple of Indian guys one on sitar and the other on a tablet and when they laid it down for the group if they weren't getting it right because the chord changes are in a 4-4 cord change and the sitar player just could not get it right, so then next thing you know they had Jeff back come up with something on the spot that would sound very close to that so he did the 44 core change on his guitar and added some rock and roll to it and next thing you know that became the iconic rift for Heart full Of Soul. One thing I forgot to mention in the original recording there was one guy on sitar and another guy on Tabla, so when the sitar player cannot get it right they had him leave but they kept the Tabla player and kept his part on the track.

I think your wife is right. At the time, this type of music was total rebellion. If someone dared to show up to school in jeans (nobody did) I can almost hear a teacher say “I hope you didn’t bring Bessie (the family cow) with you.” Implying you dressed like a farmer. If a girl’s skirt was above mid-knee she was called a “brazen hussy”. I heard that more than once. We all snickered. No collarless shirts, had to wear a belt, shirt must always be tucked in, no hair over the ears… They only showed Elvis from the waist up on TV. The list goes on. Everybody got tired of it. The thing then was to throw all the rules and regs out the window and flaunt it. I think that’s probably what she hears. Nowadays it’s no big deal, back then mothers were having hissy fits.

The main reason the Yardbirds fell apart was because they did over 500 gigs in a year in the US and it was too much for most of them. Also they had 2 lead guitars, Page and Beck, who took guitar solos in turn and tried to outdo each other. Beck got fed up with that and left. Then the rest of the band left except Jimmy Page who was determined to complete the gigs the Yardbirds were contracted for. He hired new members who performed at first as The New Yardbirds. I think the name was problematic (legally?) so they took a new name from a comment about their enterprise by Keith Moon, who said they would go down like a lead balloon, which became Led Zeppelin.

One of those bands that didn't so much evolve (like The Beatles, arguably the best band ever) as do a U-turn. I still have their first single (I Wish You Would, with Eric 'Slowhand' Clapton) & Five Live Yardbirds LP. I think they changed direction with For Your Love & never had quite the same appeal for me, never seemed to have a clear idea of what they were trying to do. Keith Relf went on to form Renaissance, a dreamy prog rock band (Northern Lights is gorgeous) & then accidentally electrocuted himself age 33. R.I.P. Keith, a short life but a creative one.
