That last scene ...so beautiful. Ida Lupino always directed films that tackled the subjects no one talked about in the 1950's. A very courageous film director.

I have a friend who contracted polio as a young child. She lost the full use of one leg so she wears a brace and uses crutches. She never let it stop her though. She married, had a child and now has 3 grandchildren. She is almost 76 years old and doing great.

What a great movie! I just discovered Sally Forrest in"Not Wanted", (also with very the talented Keefe Brasselle), and have become a true fan! This was such an opposite of her other role. She was such a versatile actress. The real life heroine from this movie must have been some kind of brave lady! Thanks for posting this! 🌈🌈🌈

I got Polio in 1946 at 2yr old. I wear a long leg brace and have post polio syndrome at 78. With Polio it takes 2 years to find out what you are going to be left with . After 2 yr you do not get Bach what you have lost. In the past, they thought you would not get worst. At 60 I did not need a cane and I was a meat cutter but then my legs got worse. This picture is very personal to me. It has a lot of things that I was not aware of. When you get Polio ,the first thing the doctor does is pull your neck and they did this in this picture. I went through life pretending I was not handicapped and it worked for me. I have a wife and 2 girls that are now school teachers. The vaccine came out when I was 12yr old. People today that do not get vaccinated should look at my right leg. They would be running for a shot.

Ida Lupino also contracted polio, although her major symptoms last briefly and only was left with minor impaired movement. Most of the film was shot at the Institute itself, and most of the film patients were actual patients of the institute at the time of filming. THE YOUNG LOVERS is the re-release title; the film was originally released in 1949 as NEVER FEAR. According to the CDC, the U.S. has been officially polio-free since 1979 because of vaccines.

Thank you, (Pizza), I managed to see the 2 films (1949 + 1950). They do have a real gel, not just because of the actors, but through the theme of the Prod/Direct - Either actor has an affliction... Both can work it out. Don't say it's a trilogy (like Star Wars), lol. I don't see it ??? (1951 ??). ? Did I cry, ... on either film ? Both, multiple times. Cheers, for that :) Xxx

One swim in Polio Pond was all it took. A Polio infection was a palpable fear in those days. A young Hugh O'Brian. Hubba Hubba. FDR's photo appears at 1:17:19. I wondered when he would be making an appearance in a film about polio. The Kabat-Kaiser Institute in Santa Monica is shown at 1:18:33. It was closed in 1962, and the building was demolished in 19644.

Super great flick. Very interesting cast. Loved the use of fencing scenes in the then modern times. Contagious Polio in my day was so feared children's play time was severely curtailed, especially during the hot days of summer. As a result socializing changed life as we knew it. Not sure but believe this dreaded disease effected Alan Aldia and Ms. Ida Lupino herself. THANKS to VACCINATIONS children and adults around the WORLD are no longer stricken by medical NIGHTMARES ! We deal with new challenges today....pray we will win those too !

I cringed at the cigarette scene with the doctor too! They just didn’t know they were on the road to lung Cancer ! As far as the cokes...they were just as they are now but not so large. The REAL coke in coco cola was only for the first years it was invented. They figured out quite early it was dangerous. Too bad it took so long for smoking ! My source for all this is being old enough to remember the time period in the movie!

weeping willow 1966 Hello, weeping willow. If I watched this movie when it was released, I would not have noticed anything wrong with the scenes where almost everyone smoked. I begun smoking when I was 18 and at 40 something, my lungs collapsed and had a traumatizing and painful confinement at the intensive care unit. I almost died. Naturally, I quit after that and now am allergic to cigarette smoke. Young people may still be watching this film. we know that constant exposure to anything, especially to all kinds of addiction has a strong impact on the viewers. Reality to fiction to reality. It's a vicious cycle that must be heeded. Take care. MrsB
