Literally stumbling upon the face of Death. Seeing your first Mariner, and just kind of vibing with him for a second ("Fuck you, D. Moments running the gamut from the small, to the humorous, to the grandiose, all seamlessly and naturally blended into a singular vision of a dying world that feels so alive, you can practically taste the Rot. Mechanically, it's one of my least-favorite FROM games, but aesthetically, ER is a non-stop hit parade. FROM's art and design staff are like a miracle. They catch lightning in a bottle. Every. Single. Time. I'm not sure they could teach other companies to do what they do if they tried.

I don't think it's good practice to literally deceive and lie to your audience, but at the same time I do wonder what would happen if they did an experiment and made a difficulty slider than didn't do anything. The trick here is that it doesn't tell you it doesn't do anything. When starting a new game, you get a popup to choose your difficulty, the default being Normal, which would describe itself as "the way the game is meant to be played". Easy mode would tell you about all these different things like more runes, slower boss attacks, fewer enemies, less enemy health/damage. But there wouldn't actually be a difference in the difficulty. I wanna know how many people say they love the game because it's accessible, then trip over themselves when they discover the option does nothing and they were playing the game on the same settings as everyone else (and enjoying it) the entire time

That doesn't work even as a hyperbole, fromsoft are famous for their difficult but fair games. The whole appeal is that yes, you can git good and master the boss. I don't particularly care if they add an easy mode or not, but I would be miffed if the easy mode is just lower boss numbers. If they wanted to add an easy mode, the only way that would not automatically make it a worse game, would be instead of changing numbers, would be to modify boss AI, their move sets and so on. That would definitely take a long time to ensure that the difficulty is difficult but fair, but this time easier.

Do they forget that Elden Ring also has Ranni? An immensely powerful character in terms of goals, ambition and means. Besides, there's been female protagonists in GTA before. I still have no idea why ever chooses to forget the first ever GTA, which had not one, not two, but THREE female protagonists (and each one was a different ethnicity to boot, it really sounds woke when you note it all down like that). It's also a fun game too. But everyone likes to pretend it doesn't exist for some reason.

I typically don't enjoy difficult games, (I just watch my husband play them for the story), but I can always appreciate the imagination, creativity, and effort that went into them. Just because I don't like or enjoy something doesn't mean it's horrible. The world doesn't revolve around my opinion. I totally understand why Elden Ring won GOTY because it's gorgeous and well made. I'll be sitting here with my animal crossing while he dies 8 times in a row.

I never was a fan of challenging games either, I just wanted to have enough challenge to feel like continuing something without being too pushed, like how sitting in a rollercoaster makes you feel like you are going dangerously fast without actually putting you in danger. But Elden Ring does an excellent job of giving you the tools and time to make the challenge doable. If you get stuck, you can go somewhere else to level up, or try another boss that gets you to the end, or get other weapons and armor that does magic damage instead of just smashing really hard. I have nothing but respect for people that beat those bosses with a club and a dream, but there is also satisfaction in beating a boss first try after leveling up when first he kept frustrating you, suddenly doing tons of damage when switching to fire magic or finding a spot where you can outwit the AI into jumping off the cliff. Add to that the gorgeous artstyle, that mask the admittedly not so special graphics in amazing setpieces and thematics, the atmosphere of both the wide, colourful open world and the dark, narrow dungeons where enemies ambush you around corners and the amazing voice actors enriching the already amazing characters and this is definitely GOTY 2022.
