SHOP WITH ME | VINTAGE, MCM, ANTIQUES | HUGE ANTIQUE MALL HUNT
So big that they give you a map! That’s Southport Antique Mall near Indianapolis, a regular stop on my cross-country jaunts where hundreds of antique and vintage/modernist dealers cram in a ton of fun for resellers and collectors alike.
I’m shopping for resale, but we take time to explore all the goodies as we wander through spaces and showcases in search of bargains. A wax bust of a 1910s maiden, fab 50’s floor lamps and 1980s band posters all have their place in this mall, and in the minds of their collectors.
Special stories and first-time finds are part of the adventure. Folk art by an evangelical minister, a show car that revolutionized 1950s design and prints from a mainlander who discovered Hawaii and never went back all have a story to tell. A few secrets remain, including the origin of the artist who designed a shiny 1950s anthurium mirror.
We also do a little recon mission regarding fakes, forgeries and reproductions along the way. New Lionel trains, black light posters that aren’t so old and a booth where “vintage” has lost its meaning all give us info to use to avoid mistakes as collectors and resellers who are seeking truly old stuff. We also learn why a wardrobe is NOT an armoire!
With so many things to see-furniture, toys, kitchenware, prints, barware, art glass, etc.-this mall proves too big to get through in a single day (or episode)! As Mr. T would say, “I pity the fool who doesn’t get to see part two,” coming soon from Southport Antique Mall.
Here are some of the other things we get to see in this video:
Wade nursery rhymes, shaving stand, wardrobe, Royal Copley ducks, Dryden Pottery, Vernon Lei Lani, Lion's Club sign, signal flags, lightning rod, bouffant hair dryer, Hall sundial, alabaster owl bookends, Shawnee Kenwood, bird flower frogs, wall pockets, Pyrex Town and Country, sand timer, Czech pitcher, Keebler Elves, Roseville Silhouette, ad thermometer, Fenton hat, Stangl tray, Lucite lamp, rooster lazy susan, Georges Briard tray, Louie Glass beverage set, L.E. Smith ewer candleholder, powder horns, 45-star flag, board games, blue apothecary bottle, pharmacy ephemera, etc.

I have, in an appropriately sized brown envelope, the Northern toilet paper prints you said were given free. I never really knew much about them. At 19:00, I inherited from my folks that brown glass piece that someone once told me was a brandy snifter, which would be an odd gift since they didn't drink alcohol. You discussed the item to the left of it, however.

I have a complete set of the Wade nursery rhyme figures...including the gingerbread man. I really like the Howard Finster clock, too. I like the Kelly menus, too. I want the Ideal futuristic Buick!😂 The decanter set next to the Georges Briard glasses really caught my eye. Loved that set. I realize I am seeing this video past day 1, but George did you know why there are so many wardrobes made in our past? I was given this information by by someone who was sharing information about why either antique or vintage residential construction only included minimal rooms. What do you think? Sherry from Alabama.
@timhazeltine3256
@timhazeltine3256 3 жыл бұрын
In America, bedroom closets were not common in residential construction until the end of 19th century, hence the need for wardrobes.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard a number of theories, one being that a closet makes a room a bedroom which brought about higher taxes, but a wardrobe turned a "non-bedroom" into a closet. However, I think Tim Hazeltine has it right, it just wasn't a part of residential construction, probably because it required extra materials and families grew large in size and wanted more flexibility in room arrangement
@sherryg7722

How amazing the information we learn from folks thanks to this wonderful group of channels. Thank you George and Tim!
@timhazeltine3256
@timhazeltine3256 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAntiqueNomad George, your'e correct regarding taxes. In some areas the presence of closets and doors affected tax rates, so a room didn't qualify as a bedroom for tax purposes if it did not have a door. So some people used curtains instead of doors. And until very recently, a room without a closet was not considered a bedroom.
