This was a fun video. Enjoyed seeing your favorites. My favorite pencils are the Lyra Polycolor ( they are much softer than other oil based pencils), Prismacolor and Derwent Chromaflow. As for watercolor pencils , I’m still enjoying the Caran Dashe Swisscolor 40 set. They are incredibly pigmented and 40 seems to more than enough to create unlimited colors. I haven’t been able to do as much art as I planned since I retired. Seems my family always has things they want me to do. My goal for the coming year is to have them weaned and do things I really enjoy 🙂

Harry, my list of must have supplies is DaVinci Watercolors of California, Princeton Aqua Elite brushes #12 long round, a flat, an angle, a wash or mop. I own Faber’s Albrecht Durer’s watercolor pencils for commissions, but I reach for Koh-I-noor watercolor pencils for my everyday work! I recently started soft pastels and I tested a whole bunch and Schminke soft sticks are the best for me, soft as butter without emptying my wallet! They are NOT the cheapest brand but best value for money spent. I use the CarbOthello pastel pencils for the details I just cannot get with my soft sticks. Well that’s enough to be going on about. I will add that surface is at times even more important than what you put down on it! 100% cotton paper is truly the best way to go and most any brand works well just chose the surface you like best! Thank you Harry for sharing your favorites. Please take care, have a lovely day!

I also have a slice tool, to add the tiny details like hairs etc works wonderfully. I recently discovered molotow paint pens and they are so much more opaque compared to posca! They are Also refillable so there is no need anymore to throw out empty paintpens, great list thank you for sharing!

I have thin plastic, lightly textured cutting board that I use as an Aquarelle pallet. I bought it for a dollar at the USA Dollar Tree chain. It doesn't have smooth size but it's on of the best deals I have. I keep a soft rubber ear cleaning bulb full of clear water on my desk. It's great for filling up water brushes but, even more, for adding a few drops of water to my pallet for mixing. I disagree about large pencil sets. I have a 172 piece set, but I do a lot of fine detail work and sometimes dip the lead in water to melt it a bit and use it thick on the paper. With those kinds of applications, it not possible to mix colors from several different pencils.

For those who love using inktense pencils and watercolour pencils and can’t afford the Caran D’ache mixing palette, I got the exact same thing, smooth one side, rough on the other, in a two pack (one large, one small) for $5 from Kmart 😊

This is a fantastic idea, someone mentioned this to me when I first discovered the palette quite a few years back and as you say, other than the smooth side, it does pretty much the same as the Caran d'Ache Palette. Excellent point and just another example of why you guys and the comment section is the most important part of the content I upload. Thank you so much and hopefully those who are unable to afford the caran dache palette, or simply have more important priorities to spend money on given our current financial climate, will take your advice and benefit from it.

Hello Harry, really interesting video and seeing what you use. I'm no artist, only colouring books and card making, however, I so agree with the M&R pencil sharpener, I've spent so much money on hand cranking ones and they always break, the little gold sharpener is brilliant. I've been trying to get the little paint pallet, thanks for that link. Thank you for sharing . Take care 👍

Thank you so much for your kind words and support, it truly does mean the world to me. My little brass M&R sharpener really was one of my special finds since starting art. I can't 100% remember where I seen the sharpener or who recommended it to me, I think I very first seen an artist called Heather Rooney use it and I thought, if it is good enough for an artist as amazing and wonderful as heather to use, then I must give it ago. Needless to say, I never looked back. Also, as far as I am concerned and I know many other people on here would agree with me, people who create adult colouring book art and card making are absolutely artists. Some of the finished pieces I have seen from crafters and adult colour book artists is just phenomenal. Thank you so much again for your support.

Love your video, thank you so much, I have added a couple of things to my shopping list... the Derwent water pencils and the Koh-I-Noor pencil eraser. I currently use and like the Tomboy mono eraser as well as the Afmat rechargeable erasers, but am always open to trying a new product. You have mentioned many of my favorites including the M&R pencil sharpener, a must for various mfg. of colored pencils. In addition to the white Posca pen, I also use and love the Signo Uni-ball UM-153. I am now a new subscriber and look forward to viewing more of your videos. Blessing always...

My first time leaving a comment. Thanks for the Caran Dache palette suggestion since I have been searching for something to use that is not paper or ceramic. My first time painting ever began a year and a half ago. I have chosen to use watercolor sketch pads and sketchbooks with watercolor pencils. I also am compelled to paint and or sketch everyday now🙂. Also, I am learning to add various water-based colored pencils, crayons and polychromos pencils for texture. Your examples on this channel are amazing! No matter the results of the product comparisons, I will continue to watch. Thank you for sharing your talent and experince.

Enjoyed hearing your favorites Harry, I use the M &R sharpeners also and a few years ago found a hand crank Afmat sharpener that was awesome for colored pencils and in fact they sent me a new blade which was the whole crank and I bought another one. I only have to turn it once. They make a vertical electric sharpener for cp also and many use it. I personally just like to have more control and not be lost in thought and lose my pencil. I also love love love the FC Matte and Lumigraph matte pencils. I never could stand the sheen and therefore went to charcoal too. I had downsized my wc pencils just because I mix them too and am a watercolorist so it is a nice way to share with others. There are definite supplies I use and need which happens to always be the CD Luminance pencils but I also love some of the Pablo’s especially the white, cream and some unique beiges and of course the Polys and I use some of the Lightfast, not the whole set. My last and maybe first favorite was the Derwent studio and Drawing Pencils which with OMS could cover a lot of space and are still very much there. Great overview and yes it is true, what works for one may not work for another and what may not work for us can surely be appreciated by others. Thank you Harry!😊

Hullo Harry, I have several art supplies that I reach for most every time I am starting a project! I admire your honesty and integrity you show in all your videos. You do receive a wide range of products and while your favorite might not be mine I appreciate your reasoning behind your choices! So much of working with a certain supply is based on comfort and being relaxed in its use! We are all so different and there are supplies everyone can find a brand that they can enjoy using! Thank you for sharing your picks and reasons for your decisions. I will say I have just one 40 well palette and so many more 12 or 14 pan palettes, of which I will use 4 to 6 colors in any given painting! Please keep creating your own personal artworks and creating tremendously great reviews on as many different brands as you can.

Hello Harry. I bought M+R sharpener after seeing your video and I am in love with it. I have elrctric sharpener, it is good but I mostly use it when we colour together with kids (i have 5 of them , so lots of pencils being used) it is easy and quick. But for myself I prefer M+R sharpener. I have double side round one and it is brilliant for Prismacolor type soft pencils, you can use the bigger hole to sharpen just a little bit so you do not break the pencils. With harder pencils like polychromos I use smaller hole ,it gives you super sharp/ longer point. Would recommend that sharpener for everyone! So very gratefull for your videos ! Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your personal favorites. I am interested in the palette to use with Inktense pencils and I would like to try the water brush as the cheap ones I have are a pain. I will also check out the fountain pen, ink supplies and pitt pencils. The pencil sharpener I use is an Afmat Autostop. It is the best electric I have found which actually greatly reduces breakage in Prismacolor pencils--I just pop the pencil in straight up and back out. I have started buying small sets of Derwent colored pencils and I really like those and hop to expand my collection. I hope you have a blessed day.

I use the Staedtler clutch pencil as well, though I also have a Linex one. The difference between them is the diameter of the knurled section; the Staedtler has a diameter matching that of the corners of the hexagon, whereas the Linex matches the sides of the hexagon. Depending on what grip you use, one can be preferable to the other. I tend to use both of them when sketching, with one having a hard lead and the other one a much softer one. It makes it very easy to tell them apart, both tactile from the grip but also color (Staedtler's blue vs Linex's green).

Yeah unfortunately I suffered a serious spinal injury when I was serving in the British Army, as a result I was medically retired and underwent lots of further spinal procedures in civilian hospitals. But then I found this community, who warmly and without question, welcomed me with open arms and quite literally saved my life. That was about ten or so years ago now and since then, art and the art community has been my go to place when I feel the urge to draw or just cheer myself up. Watching other artists create is such a tonic for me, I just can't get enough. Thank you so much for your wonderful support and comment, thank you.

If I had to empty my art room (posh name for a very small room that doubles as my home office) the final things I'd be left with would be the pencils, my Pencil Buddy and my Caran d'Arch hand crank sharpener with a Tombow mono eraser and a battery operated eraser. @TheArtGearGuide
@TheArtGearGuide Ай бұрын
Hi there, it is a pain in the backside to clean in so much as, when you are using staining pigments, they are just going to leave stains. I know for some it can look unsightly having different colored stains all over it, but for others it is a work of art in its own right. I fall somewhere in between, when I first started to use it, I wanted it to stay white and so I would use spray bleach to remove the stains, but I was never 100% successful. So long as the stains are not contaminating mixing on the surface, which is not happening on my palette, that is the main thing. I am sorry I wasn't able to provide a solution, but some of the other artists in the comments may be a bit more successful than me and provide you with some help. Thank you so much for your comment, support and watching the content, I can't express in words how much it means to me, thank you so much.

With my list I could be very happy creating for years with: my grandfather's M+R sharpener 🥰 Faber Castell Polychromos Color Pencils and the Albrecht watercolor pencils, M. Graham and Daniel Smith Watercolors ( but also keen on schmincke and WN super granulating colors) I like: Copic markers/OLO markers, I'm never without graphite, I have used Staedtler Lumograph since I was a kid. But still testing different graphite for my favorite: Mitsubishi HI Uni and Caran D'ache grafwood are also nice. I also like my Caran D'ache Neo colors-I & II , R&K Inks and my Derwent graphitint, and other water soluble graphite, Golden Open Acrylics. Also working on finding my favorite papers.Though I do know I am partial to seawhite sketchbooks. I have lots of supplies other than these but could probably be very content with just these.
