Top 20 Items You Should Never Sell On eBay

In this video we will go over the most common items you would never want to sell on eBay. Many of the items should be already on most sellers lists of items not to mess, but those who are just starting off may not realize all of the items that can't be listed. Some of these items will be a surprise to some sellers including those who have been selling for a very long time.
eBay constantly adds items to their banned items list so if you aren't paying attached you could be caught off guard, and get dinged by eBay for listings items they do not allow. Check out the video if you want to safely sell on eBay without risking you account, and business.

We also have to watch out for things that have found to be dangerous I found some sort of little beads that when you pour water on them they melt together but then if I looked it up and found out they were very dangerous for children so I never listed it

Another item to avoid are UPS/FedEx uniforms, even older ones, which can sometimes be found in thrift stores. Someone can buy these to impersonate an employee during a home robbery, etc.

Great video! But, with few exceptions, all those restrictions..in my opinion a ridiculous! When Ebay first started to operate there were zero restrictions and 90% sell-through. Now almost everything gets restricted and sell-through is less than 1%. Been selling there for years, and it gets worse every year. Soon, there will be nothing left that is allowed to sell there.

International Trade Consultant here - Embargo countries are CRIMEA - REGION OF UKRAINE, CUBA, IRAN, NORTH KOREA, and SYRIA. This also includes shipping items to another country that will in turn ship it to one of those countries. Also there are items that are restricted and need special licensing if they can encrypt data among other things. Most people selling on eBay won’t run into this sort of thing, however it is not unheard of to have your packaged ceased at the boarder.

So I ordered a pallet from wholesale ninjas last year and found 75% of the box was children’s cold medicine, makeup, and adult toys. Not something that I ever thought I would get in my wholesale ninjas purchase. I appreciate your information about the adult toys. I will remove them from my store. I had listed a record album made in Cuba in the fifties a while back. Ebay said NO GO! So I removed all references to Cuba since whomever is looking knows the history by title and artists. Sold it for a decent amount.

I purchased at auction some carved smaller horses. I was told they were bone. After researching the stamp of maker, I found they are ivory made by a company, who sold ivory prior to being banned to sell. The company went out of business after ban, which would date the ivory, but decided not to take a chance.

Thank you for this listing. My grandmother died about 1960 and one of the things I found later was a pair of maracas with Cuba painted on them. Another thing I didn't know about was used perfume, and I'm guilty of having bought one and I never even thought about it being a health hazard another thing I don't remember you talking about is license plates in some instances so I'll go back and re-watch this and take better notes because some of the things you talked about I might have tried to sell. And at least I know what to do with Camel Joe matches from back in the day when they gave them away for cigarette coupons, & you saved me time researching safely shipping. I don't sell or buy any items on Ebay anymore because of the increase in scammers either getting my items and then turning around and getting their money back. Sometimes not sending back original items I sold. Buying certain items are a risk also, not getting what was advertised. Not like it was in the past.

I often get multiple items in a lot when I’m sourcing at auction, and a couple of things that I’ve acquired that would likely fall into the banned items category are a) a vintage child’s chemistry set that still has liquid in the bottles. The labels have all come off so I don’t know which chemical is in which bottle. Too bad because the graphics are pretty cool. And b) some antique apothecary bottles from T.Eaton department store with chemicals still in the bottles and the original cork lid. I am afraid to try and sell these for fear of the very reasons you’ve laid out here, so now they reside in my personal collection. Thanks again for another great video Don.

I had a John Lennon bootleg album listed for two days when suddenly it was deleted with the following friendly email from eBay stating "We had to remove your listing because it didn’t follow our Counterfeit item policy. That happened to me too They were cds of my radio show I did an 18 hour retrospective about a musician friend of mine who didn't care that I was selling them. Ebay banned me and I appealed saying it was my show and that I owned it x but they wouldn't even talk to me. I realize that it was a sketchy thing, but I was told by a lawyer that I could. Bad info.

The UK government apparently thinks that by making it more difficult for law abiding citizens, who simply want some quality cutlery, to obtain knives, that the criminal element won't be able to obtain or simply make knives for the purpose of using those knives to commit crime. Banning knives in prison still doesn't stop determined criminals from obtaining or making them. Nanny state government just needs to give the appearance that they are "doing something" even if it means trampling on basic liberties.

Excellent info / reminder / update once again Don. I might add believe anything that is used that had 'fuel' running through it even though empty and throughly cleaned OVER SEAS. I had vintage harly Pan Head carb go quick some years back to fellow in Germany. It went through the 'hub' in early days of service and I was tracking. Stalled for a week + then I received notice 'banned item' for export. Thought I was screwed. Notified buyer he was cool fellow. Thought I was out hundreds and the bay took care of both myself and buyer in full. Said they we're destroying carb. Told them I would take it back. Possible one of employees had a HD Pan he was missing correct carb for ?? Sold many carbs within lower 48 with no prob 🤐🏁

Excellent information as always. So glad you mentioned the stalactite/mite issue. I bought one from a local picker at the beginning of the pandemic (he was selling everything off just to pay his rent), was thinking about listing it as I see there are some on there. Now? Nope, not going there. And tons of used perfumes on eBay, I understood on one of the eBay forums that the method of dispersing the perfume had something to do with it being banned or not. A roll on would be banned, a spray wouldn't because the bottle part wouldn't actively touch the skin. I think I'm not taking any chances. Too many other things out there that aren't on the banned list.

I sold a high-tech scope on Ebay. Everybody should know that you can't ship anything to do with firearms out of the country. As soon as I listed the scope, buyers from Europe set on me like piranhas! Good thing I did some research cuz I would have committed a Federal crime by shipping the scope to Europe! I think the law covers anything to do with firearms. Might be a cool video to cover things you can't ship internationally. I can't remember the sale, but I had a GSP sale for an item that couldn't be shipped to a particular country on GSP. Ebay ate the cost and I got paid anyway, but it's good to know. This is also a great reason to make sure your items are categorized correctly.

You can limit where you ship in your settings. You can exclude all other countries except for the USA if you want.

Many ebay sellers selling automotive air bags and shipping through USPS which is illegal. To ship UPS Ground you must take a federal training course and become certified to ship automotive air bags.

I had a beautiful 1920s cloche hat which I listed on ebay about 15 years ago. Some animal rights group contacted me, telling me it had crown feathers from a bird called an ibis, which is so rare it was thought to be extinct for a time. They stated that they'd refrain from reporting me if I canceled the listing, which I did. I was eventually able to sell it firsthand to a collector in a sub-rosa sort of transaction.

One of the items sold on ebay regularly is peyote, there are hundreds of them, they just don't call it by name. There are lots of illegal and banned or restricted species, you just have to recognize it and know. Ebay just don't have a botanist on staff.

While we are touching on the list of things the government will go after you for if you sell it on ebay, I wanna throw this one topic into the mix. I 100% agree with following the rules. If you want you can open up your eBay type of site and see what they had to go thru while becoming one of the most secure sites on the web. Beware of the buyers that will lie to get money out of a seller and use feedback for leverage. Lastly, the federal tax on our labor was supposed to be a temporary tax for the war effort back in the days of World Wars. There is also no law mandated that tax. It is a voluntary thing. We are getting nothing in return for it. Let's avoid the divide and rule out there and we the people hold the key in the tax on the labor that built this country before it ceases to exist. I wish everyone the best going forward.

There is a law firm in Northern Illinois who will buy your product and have them shipped to their law office then you receive email you are being sued, for 500.00 they will dismiss. Check out the numerous KZbin videos where sellers are being sued

I really needed to see this video. I was just wondering yesterday about these bottles of perfume. Very glad I haven’t listed them. If they’re brand new, sealed, and 40 years old does it make a difference or is it strict adherence to no selling of perfumes?

It's just used perfume they have a problem with. If its 40 years old and still sealed/unused you're fine. Unless I've misunderstood the rules you can't ship it outside of the country due to the alcohol in the perfume. Rules can get grey there.

Correct. You can ship new and sealed perfume within the US, but not internationally. Within the US by ground only, not air.

I tend to sell a lot of perfumes including vintage perfumes. When you sell perfumes you can only sell ground shipping only. Because perfumes contain alcohol and any other product that contains a type of alcohol is considered highly flammable and can be shipped Within the US states only by ground. Because I tend to Sell Avon perfumes, I sell them as a vintage container with whatever amount of perfume is left in the bottle because they are collectors items. I also so use perfumes if they are sprays because they are not having skin to skin contact and because on sprays you cannot remove the topper or tamper with it or put in something that is not a perfume without busting the bottle.

@christine anderson What you are stating you do is 100% AGAINST eBay rules as age of the item means NOTHING. Every part of your comments is TERRIBLE and DANGEROUS advice to other sellers. Calling something a collectible, and listing it in the wrong category is NOT aloud either. You are also giving terrible advise on sprays as well since those are 100% BANNED on eBay as well. No OPENED bottle of perfume can be sold on eBay period. END OF STORY. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. Spray bottles can 100% be tampered with extremely easy. You are also risking LEGAL jeopardy for yourself and risking your eBay account also, since it is illegal to sell opened perfume in some states.

A lot of these are because the post office does not allow for shipping on flammable or explosive items - perfume, lithium batteries, matches, etc. Kind of a no brainer.

With regards to guns, it's not just receivers that are banned but rather any part of certain types of guns. For example, I once tried to sell the fabric shoulder sling for an SKS rifle (semi-automatic military gun) and they pulled the auction. You also have to be aware of foreign laws if you ship internationally. A guy in Australia contacted me to ask if I ship there. The item he wanted to buy was a WWI era British officer's sword which had a straight blade. Alas it's illegal to ship a straight-bladed sword to Australia for some reason, so I had to tell him not to bid.

I know it's related to tobacco products but vaping products were banned a while back. A couple of years ago I bought all my vape stuff from ebay when it was allowed. Then when I quit vaping i was going to sell my stuff but I noticed all vaping products were gone. So I researched it and they were banned.

Exactly my thoughts. I mean it sounds like hundreds of items and scenarios to look out for. Some stuff is obvious like alcohol, but open makeup and grandpa's old playboys leading to felonies and kicked off ebay is crazy to me.

Old railroad locks can not be sold on Ebay, as I discovered when I listed one a couple years ago. I ended up putting it in a railroad "junk drawer lot" with no mention of the lock and keys in title or description, but they were prominently pictured. It was a rare one and purchased by a museum in Texas.

You selling it that way was 100% against US laws, and could have ended up putting you in legal jeopardy, especially since you already knew you couldn't sell it. If it was reported by someone to eBay they would have shut your account down for good also, since they already warned you about it.

@@TheAuctionProfessor 🤔 I've not heard that private sales of collectible railroad locks is illegal. I'm part of a Facebook collector's group where, last I knew, members of the group were selling the old locks and keys privately. I'll have to look into this.
