Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma and went #1 in the NFL draft, taken by the Arizona Cardinals. He also played baseball at Oklahoma and he had the choice of playing pro ball. He was the 9th overall selection in the MLB draft, by the Oakland Athletics. That made him the first player ever to be drafted in the first round of both sports. As the quarterback at Allen H.S., the team was 42-0 and won three straight state championships.

I went to the school that “Friday Night Lights”, (book, TV show, and movie) is based on. My Sr year we were undefeated and won State (51 years ago this fall). My brother was a captain and they went to state, but lost, and my dad filmed the games for the coaches for 32 years. You could say Texas High School football is in my blood. My grandson’s team won state his Sr. Year in 2019… totally different school and town. We love it!

I played on field #3, El Paso High School, twice in the 1970’s. My team, the Austin Panthers, won both games. What you don’t get a feeling for in the video is the view from the field. Looking south the lights of El Paso Texas, and Juarez Mexico are breath taking. A great place to play a game.

I grew up in a very small town in west Texas (population 3400) and the obsession over football is so real, at least in my days in that area (1980s-early 2000s). There are big pep rallies Friday afternoon before the games on Friday night. Everyone in town wore red shirts (school color) and most wore ribbons that said silly little saying about that week’s games. Extra police were required at the game. Different classes or clubs ran the concession stand to make money for their organization. And oh Lord! The spectacle once a year at Homecoming was truly unbelievable!!! Looking back it was really pretty mental.

Are you sure only 10K? My high school was one of the first to build the really nice stadiums (now it’s mediocre compared to the ones in the Houston area), but it’s capacity when it was built in the early 80’s was 19,000. I’m just thinking your comment might be a typo. I used to live in Tomball, but hadn’t been there in probably 10+ years … I was shocked when we were driving by and I saw the new stadium. Some high school games are such rivalries that they have to be played in a college stadium. We regularly had 10,000 people at our games back around 1970 and this was in a town with over a dozen high schools. Rivalry games would draw over 15,000 to a football game. High School basketball playoffs can draw over 20,000 if you have a few top players.

Just to clarify, vast majority High Schools (HS) in the US do not have stadiums like this. Each state has a classification system for HSs based on the number of kids enrolled in the school. Most of the schools in my large, mostly barren state are 1-A Division 1 or 1-A Division 2 meaning they have 10 to 109 kids in the entire HS. As you can imagine, the football stadiums at these schools are nothing like this. Even though the entire town and parts of the surrounding farming community turn up for 8-man football (because there aren't enough kids to field an entire 11-man team) Friday Night games, there are just 3 sets of hard wooden splintery bleachers. We generally just bring our lawn chairs and pop them up around the 30 yard line. Also to clarify, my husband and I have no kids that attend this school and never have. It's just something to do in a small town on a Friday night. Now, the 4A-6A High Schools that have over 500 kids in the school will have larger, better equipped seating and amenities. But there aren't as many of those as there are the smaller schools.

-Canton, Ohio is the birthplace of American football. That is why then Hall of Fame is there and the Hall of Fame game is played in that stadium. Massillon is up the road from Canton and they are rivals. The burn you missed was because of famed coach Paul Brown who was an alum of Massillon and their football coach, who was the later the coach of the Cleveland Browns until he fell out with the owner and left to form the Cincinnati Bengals. The burn was, at the time of making this video, the Bengals sucked and their stadium is named Paul Brown Stadium, hence they do more winning at the high school stadium than the pro team in Cincinnati...

No, it isn't. The first professional game ever played was in Latrobe Stadium in PA. It was not in Ohio. That is a fact. "September 3, 1895 - The first professional football game is played in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The Latrobe YMCA defeated the Jeannette Athletic Club 12-0." They gave it to Cleveland over location and politics. So, they made up that it was the first. Look it up. I ran track meets there over 40 years ago. Big sign as you enter coumarate's that piece of history. No one debated its authenticity until the NFL tried to change history. I mean this is long before Cleveland got the paper title.

A lot of the really small football programs in the US in which most American's have never even heard of before can bring in around 700-1000 fans for their really big games, and that doesn't come close to what the football programs on this list can bring in. It would probably take the really small programs 10 years to bring in the number of fans that these stadiums can hold for 1 game.

I am fairly certain that some of the university stadiums get the largest crowds. Even more than the Profesional Stadiums. Someone I'm sure will correct me, but I think that there are 5 or 6 college stadiums that get crowds of over 100,000 fans per game! I think that the average attendance for Profesional games (NFL) is somewhere around 65,000.

When he said the Alamo stadium that' you'd remember, that's because during the Texas Revolution (when Texas won its independence from Mexico), there was a massacre after the Alamo fell, (Mexicans storming the Texan defenders in the Alamo), and 1 of 2 battle cries for the battle when we won our independence was "Remember the ALAMO!" Every Texan learns about this (if not sooner) in 7th grade (12-13 yrs old) when we take Texas History.

It’s not just the parents. It’s the community. I lived in a burb of Atlanta in the the early 90’s. The middle school team was under the direction of the high school coach. He didn’t want them picking up bad ‘habits’. A newspaper tried to ‘break a big story’. A few coaches were being paid $250,000 - $400,000 per year. I don’t know what the point was. The people were like….’so?’ They’re paid through taxes from levies and the people wanted to have the best coach. My son played. He was self conscious about his weight. After tryouts he asked the coach if he should lose some weight. In the best ever southern accent the coach said, ‘why? You plan on gettin shorter?’

Don’t feel bad about the joke that went over your head. It is based on a famous American saying that you couldn’t know. The stadium is called the Alamo Stadium. There is an extremely famous saying here: “Remember the Alamo!” The Alamo was a mission that was attacked by the Mexican army during Texas war for independence. Every defender of the Alamo was slaughtered with no prisoners taken. Remember the Alamo immediately became a rallying cry that galvanized Texans to win independence but also get revenge.

In the states of Texas, Alabama, Ohio and Tennessee, high school football is an absolute religion. All these stadiums will, more than likely, completely sell out. Since only 32 cities nationwide have a NFL team and only about 15 others have minor league pro football teams, high school football is even more local than college football. That’s the only team in town for people, and the town shows up. You don’t wanna be in a some Texas towns the day after the local high school football team loses. You’d swear everyone would’ve had cow crap dumped in their cars.

Growing up, my HS didn’t have a stadium on campus and played their games at the University in our city. Although as stadiums go it was extremely rudimentary, the size of the stands walloped any of the other local teams home stadiums and we always packed our side, easily 10,000 I’d say, just cuz we could. Had a good team to show for it as well, had a female quarterback on the team too.

I hate the way that some of these videos make it seem like all experience in the United States is similar. as for football, only a small segment of people who live in the United States have families and children that experienced any kind of football when they were young. some people might live in a far north area where hockey was much more prevalent, or some might have more intellectual families where it was all about learning, and outdoor kind of exercise might be any number of things besides football. My main objection though is that many of these nostalgia kind of videos Are from a white middle to upper class Midwest perspective. completely ignoring the perspective and experiences of 75% of the country.
