I'm tellin' ya right now... those effing MAP/boost sensors can KILL these 24V trucks damned near dead in their tracks. Several years ago, I had one that was defective/bad in my stock '99 Cummins 24V 5.9L, auto, QC, LB, 4x4 pickup truck. She would fire up and idle just fine all day long, but she would barely move when driven. The problem literally came out of nowhere too. One day she was fine, next day she was fucked. She was so slow to accelerate, it was simply dangerous to drive on the road. At first I thought perhaps I had a major fuel delivery issue, either with the lift pump or injection pump. Thankfully, that turned out NOT to be the case. Strangely, she was throwing over a dozen codes in both the Chrysler PCM and Cummins ECU, all of which just didn't make any damned sense. So, along with my trusty OEM Dodge Ram Cummins service manuals, my basic electrical diagnostic tools, and 20+ years of being a mechanic, I tried fixing the turd myself, evenings after work for about a week. I simply refuse to just throw parts (aka: money $$) at unknown problems just in an attempt to fix them. Proper diagnostics is key! After I was about ready to lose all my marbles, I finally had to take it to a close friend who has been working on MOPAR stuff for over 30 years, and had access to the right diagnostic scan tool (DRB III). After nearly a week of dicking around with it evenings after work, he finally diagnosed it as the MAP sensor. It kinda blew us both away, but in the end, made perfect sense. We installed the new MAP sensor, cleared the codes, and it ran crisp, like a new truck again - even with over 200K on the clock. Freakin' amazing how one little sensor can screw up a vehicle. Damned computer controls, love 'em or hate 'em, we're stuck with 'em!
@bbarnett67956 жыл бұрын
I am having this same problem, map/boost sensor code. I've put a new one on my truck but the code will not clear and is still in limp mode. Any ideals would be much appreciated.
@aaronhumphrey20096 жыл бұрын
If the engine management system is computer controled, and the vehicle has a display screen, why not have built-in diagnostics ?! Time saved is money earned...hello ? Is this thing on ? Oh, Map sensor.....
@turbodiesel47096 жыл бұрын
@@aaronhumphrey2009: Built-in diagnostics costs the manufacturer money. #1.) They aren't interested in doing that, for a million obvious reasons. #2.) If diagnostics are built-in, the diagnostic tools companies and the automotive shops would have much less ability to make money. #3.) Vehicle manufacturers do NOT want the average person to be able to work on their own vehicle. They never have. Expensive modern electronic technologies have made it even easier to prevent the average person from being able to do much of anything for themselves on a vehicle any more. Manufacturers want to sell brand new vehicles to the average consumer as often as they can, they do not want people keeping "old" vehicles up and running.
@turbodiesel47096 жыл бұрын
@@bbarnett6795 : Something else is most likely wrong. Just because a vehicle "throws a code", does not mean that the sensor that set the code is bad. Common fallacy that most NON-professional vehicle technicians just don't seem to understand. A diagnostic failure code that is set/showing simply means there is a problem somewhere in a given system. In your particular case, the Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure (or Turbo Boost Pressure in the intake) is likely too high or too low. There are several things that can cause this. Further diagnostics are necessary to figure out what's really wrong with your truck. Your problem could be a lot of different things. Start simple. Inspect your intake plumbing, boots, clamps, gaskets, seals, etc. Check for cracks, holes, leaks, loose clamps, etc. Inspect the air-to-air intercooler for any cracks or leaks. It may have to be removed and pressure tested to verify it doesn't have any leaks. Inspect your turbocharger. Make sure the wastegate on the turbo is functioning properly. Many mechanical wastegates eventually succumb to failure over time, due to corrosion and/or due to high engine operating hours/miles. There are various tests to do check for the proper functioning of your turbocharger and its wastegate. Has anyone dicked with the turbocharger/intake or fueling system in your truck? Boost foolers, tuners, and other aftermarket stuff can lead to problems if they are not used or installed correctly. Has your truck ever been hit or wrecked? Sometimes strange problems from accidents can crop up over time from prior collisions and not be an issue until days, weeks, months, or even years later. Sometimes, a code set can be caused by a somewhat unrelated problem as well. For example, when my truck had the code for the MAP, it also had about 12 other failure codes that were set during the same time frame. Even after clearing them all out, 2/3rds of them came back almost immediately after the next test drive cycle. This "pile-up" of failure codes being set was because of the "snowball-effect" of other problems that developed quickly from the bad boost sensor readings that were being sent to the truck's ECU and PCM. As I recall, there were about 6 codes in the Chrysler PCM, and another 6 in the Cummins ECU. Some similar, and some totally different. Ironically, everything checked out fine, except finally, by a very lengthy process of elimination (checking every "failure" and verifying the proper functions of what the failure codes were pointing to), we came to the conclusion that the MAP/boost sensor was my actual problem. After an exhausting amount of diagnostics and finally installing a new Cummins $150 MAP sensor, my "no power problems" went away. My point is, this will not always be the case, as each individual vehicle's situation MAY differ/vary.

@@turbodiesel4709 All true, unfortunately . That, the high price of a new Diesel truck, and depreciation are all excellent reasons for me not to buy a new truck. Once they're out of warranty, you've looking at potentially big repair costs.. ruinously high for the average owner...

PowerDrivenDiesel This is really an awesome thing to do for someone and just to show people what these tractor power plants can do! I have been running transfer dump trucks since I was 19 I am currently 33. Ran anything from 3406 cat to c7 c12 c15 and my favorite but far from the best was my personal truck was a Kenworth T800 with a ISX 450 Cummins2003! But since then I have wanted my Cummins in my daily since! About 6 months ago I got the only help I’ve ever had in life thru some inheritance. I bought a house and I got my 06’ 3500 ram 5.9l trusty and searched for months for the 6spd manual cause I’m a driver right! Spent 18k on it with 274k miles but supposedly a new motor and it looked new (NOT) drove it 3 hrs before it started to miss and knock ! I was heart broken, anyways it sat for 2 weeks while the only shop around here I live ( about 56 miles from Canada in Idaho Sandpoint, ID)! It looked great in my driveway lol but I had already order Banks big ram air intake manifold, the ram air intake and the automind tuner cause I wanted mpgs with a punch when I wanted. Well after the first month the decided it was just a bad head gasket 2k in labor and parts! Nope another month goes by and now it’s cylinder damage on 3 and 4! Sends it off to a machine shop in Spokane, another month and now it’s real great news! It was a rebuild but it had been bored past recommended specs from Cummins and sleeved with thick sleeves only on 3 and 4 ! And block was warped and had been cut past recommended specs! 3 and a half months and 5k and my truck had no motor and me vehicle! I used the very last of my inheritance from my grandfather to have one built by Black Water Engines out of Virginia and it’s a beauty forged connectors arp studs the works! 6k and another month to finally get it and 7k in labor so my dream truck of my allotted 20k has turned into our 34k and over 5 months and it’s been done for 3 weeks and I’ve drove it a Total of 12 hours! It’s been back to this stupid shop 3 times already and this last time was leaking oil from the front of the engine tranny fluid from where they took it apart and when I pulled up the brand new radiator I made them put in blew up! I’m a grown man literally trying not to cry right now cause you guys stoked this kid out so tuff and I have lived and breathed diesel for over 15 years and just so heart broken with my dream truck I don’t even want to drive it! Instead im getting ready to back out to my unheated shop at about 5 degrees and put a fuel pump in my old 91’ 4Runner 3.0 slow cause I’m afraid I’m gonna break my Cummins! Oh and I went absolutely into debt trying to build my dream nightmare truck that gonna have to sell it to keep my house! Build on guys it’s truly radical what you guys do and just wish I could share the passion still but my flames been put out by a crooked car salesmen!! Rather be Cummins than stroken and day! Don’t get me started on Izzy’s duramax! Unless it comes in Peterbilt or Kenworth it’s not diesel!!! Douces

Now I’ve got 315000. Fixed the click in the steering. Another issue came up, steering box replaced. Then my batteries exploded. Replaced and replaced some cables. Hopefully the alternator will stop overcharging now. 👍🏽

Truck still running well. I might go ahead and replace the alternator anyway. It’s old and may be starting to go out. 👍🏽

I could be wrong but was the truck owner wearing a Hollister shirt!? If im right that dude should not be allowed to drive a cummins...

I’m from the east coast haha I spend a lot of my past time surfing.

What I find odd is that Hollister is just an old farm town turned bedroom community, how it made it onto some clothing wear line I don't know.

Now you need to do a DOUBLE YOUR POWER contest for the 6.2/6.5 GM diesel :) LOL

+mcgyverdude... Well hell, that's simple. Just transplant a Cummins. Done. LOL
@CrankAddict6 жыл бұрын
Not so simple. Did you watch Finnegan put one in his 70s ramp truck? I've got a marine 6.5 in my '84 suburban now, and I just added a holset hx35. Maybe in the near future....

Great video, but why would you use an exposed "belt" to drive the mechanical lift pump? If/when that belt breaks you are going to be in a lot of trouble.
@jkrause136 жыл бұрын
I run a mechanical lift pump similar to this setup and it's a toothed belt that is NOT under tension. I assume PowerDrivenDiesel's pump is the same setup. If so, these belts will probably outlast the truck (if you live up here in Michigan where rust is destined to kill the truck) as the belts are really not under any kind of strain whatsoever. Even so, when doing a mechanical pump you also have the ability to use your factory electric pump as a backup, and to rig it up so that it automatically kicks in if the belt were to break. This will at least get you stock pressure for you to drive it home and work on it. That is how I run mine. The electric pump still runs for priming, and if my pressure drops below 10 it kicks in automatically.

Of course you realize he's going to drive home and immediately install a bigger turbo just to see what it can handle. It's a good 20 minute add. You do good work. It also shows the challenges of hot rodding computer controlled vehicles. You need a ton of support electronics. I would've liked to watch the tailpipe though. Would it still pass emissions?

Hindsight is always 20/20 but boy it sure seems like this video from that era put power driven diesel on the map! A million people can’t be wrong. I immediately went to the website to buy that mechanical fuel pump, but couldn’t find it anywhere? What’s the story on that? You guys are awesome!

The manufacture of the pump that we used stopped making it during covid and have not found a suitable replacement.

Really seem like an awesome bunch of guys and seem like they know a lot about these 24v trucks.. looks like I'll be giving them a call in the next week or so, I see they have a lot on sale. After all my stuff is said and done I'd like to dyno my truck as well to make sure I'm making what I should. My question is, doesn't Quadzilla advertise a 180hp gain at level 10? I mean they did accomplish this in the video, but they had also added a set of injectors. Thanks ahead of time.
