I just thought he was a sort of imp that likes candy and uses a gown and jack-o-lantern as disguise to appear more friendly. While mischievous and playful, he's not exactly harmful. And (probably like most people did) I thought his localized name was rather derived from jack-o-lantern or jack-in-the-box, since the original just says something among the lines of "Pumpkin King".

When I first expirienced Halloween in acnl, I had junk all over the place and the very next day I saw a Mayaslia (That flower that appears when your town is dirty) and I thought "oh shoot I killed Jack". Later I came up with a theory that Jack was Satan or some Demon of some sort so every halloween I put Cross designs on the ground to ward him off. (Never works tho...)

Well, My head canon is that i think He is a human dressed up as a pumpkin in disguise. In his pumpkin costume He is fun loving, but as a human, He is tired and exhausted. In 2005 - 2007 the reason why jack never Appeared In Wild world is because He was exhausted, like his true self and Didn't Want to do trick or treating. Also why He never took off his Mask is because He has alot of scars and burns that never healed, so He always Takes off his Mask when no one Sees him.

Even though you have some proof as to what exactly Jack is, I must sadly go against your theory. As most of us know, Nintendo is a Japanese based company, and loves to put Japanese fokelore in their games. Whisp being a "spirit" isn't far off of what he actually is. Whisp is a yōkai. These are entities (commonly spirits or demons) that affect the every day life of everyone around you. Jack is the same way. He wants candy, and comes and goes when he can. Yōkai also take on any shape or form, explaining his pumpkin head and human body. I do find your theory of the game being set in purgatory believable, but that could also be a kid who thought they were in a dream actually being in a hellacious nightmare that they can't get out of because they are lost in their own mind or simply in a coma. This could also be why you travel in a car or train. You could have gone into the coma in an accident of one of them. Nintendo also includes a fair share of other creepy things, but for now I will rest my case, and see if you can prove or disprove my theory. P.S I in no way communicate or work with Nintendo or any of the employees.
