Hey I’m starting to get back into it, any tips on how to improve middle register? I can barely get to a G above the staff.
@TheBlackTrumpeter3 жыл бұрын
1) approach trumpet in a relaxed state with good/balanced posture 2) learn how to properly use breath support and tongue level to do most of the work for you rather than squeezing or pinching with the middle of the lips. 3) Sing/hum/whistle to match the pitch you want to play. If you can produce the note from within and not rely on the instrument to play the note, you will be more accurate.

@@TheBlackTrumpeter Thank you so much for the reply! I will apply it to my routine.

Great exercise! I particularly like the fact that it goes up the triad , then adds the sixth rather then the octave. Reason being is it can be much more difficult to slur up a fourth (like most range studies utilizing full major arpeggios) rather then a whole step when working on your range.
@TheBlackTrumpeter7 жыл бұрын
Thanks but I can't take the credit. Just sharing what I've learned and what worked for me 😄 Yeah man! I like those aspects as well. It really tests how efficient I am with my air support, air speed and tongue arch. But the thing I'm thinking about is making sure all the notes have the same tone quality as much as possible. The body takes care of the rest. Although I know what all the mechanisms are that produce the sound I want; I don't focus on those minute details.

I've been going through a major embouchure change. My horn used to be pointed upwards and I would blow harder and activate the abdominals to play high notes and I would top out at around F/F# above the staff. I would also form cuts on my gums because I would press the horn into my face to player louder and/or higher. I now am trying to play more efficiently with my horn down, no face pressure, no abdominals (except for when playing louder, not higher) and I've been using your videos to help me. Thanks.
@joegaming25832 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is old, but are you not suppose to use abdominal to play higher? I've been playing for a little over a year now and when I play anything past a high E I can definitely feel my abs working.

Great vid. I have some thoughts on this: The important part of this exercise is the pause. During the pause, it’s best to think about what you just did: what worked, and what didn’t. I like to think that my brain is “smart”, and my embouchure is “dumb”, and these slow, deliberate exercises help us physically reflect on what we’re doing, to help our “dumb” embouchure get it right eventually. It takes a long time, but with consistency the payoff is totally worth it. Great content sir! 👊🎺

Hey Aaron. These are some great exercises for trumpet playing! I've been doing my trumpet slurs, and I've noticed that I've been doing them wrong. How do I clearly play my lip slurs without moving my mouth because that's an issue I'm having. Thanks 👍. Edit: How long should I practice these lip slurs to improve on my range? How consistent do you think I should be? Also, lip slurs aren't the most natural thing in the world for me because I try to avoid using my mouth, moving my lips/jaw. How should I prevent this for future instances?

What’s going on with your mouth? Do you have an injury?
@BR2201b8 ай бұрын
@TheBlackTrumpeter Hey, Aaron. No injury. I've just been moving my oral cavity to play in the upper register of my trumpet, and apparently, that's not the correct way to play lip slurs successfully. I've developed a bad habit of moving my mouth in order to play higher. My band teacher advised me to play lip slurs to play higher notes. How can I play lip slurs correctly without moving my mouth a lot just to hit a high note?
@TheBlackTrumpeter8 ай бұрын
My teacher used to say that the movement happens inside the cup of the mouthpiece. That helped me work on the smaller movements of my aperture and tongue placement to be more efficient. I go into detail in this tutorial kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmHUnn6Xd5x5aZIsi=46My94o7cP8hXDIc

My problem is that i cannot reach even the C in the middle of the staff. My lips just stop vibrating no matter what I try to do. Sometimes I reach a beautiful E by mistake, and cannot reproduce the embouchure(((
@TheBlackTrumpeter7 жыл бұрын
skellez83 There are a few reasons why your lips stop vibrating. 1) you might be opening your aperture too much as you ascend and try to hit higher notes. Instead think about keeping your aperture the same (for notes in the staff) and use a FASTER airstream rather than MORE air. Start from C below the staff and go up chromatically in half notes to 3rd space C. Slowly increase the airspeed as you ascend. 2) you might be blowing too much air and playing too loud. This may cause your lips to fly apart/open, thus causing the lips to stop vibrating. Same advice as #1 but play a low dynamic and allow your airstream to do the work and don't force it. 3) too much tension and pressing the mouthpiece against you embouchure. This causes the lips to stop vibrating. Relax the grip of your left hand, lift your elbows away from your body. Pretend that you have tennis balls under your armpits...better yet...put tennis balls under your armpits so you know how it feels to have your elbows away from your body. 😂 By lifting your arms a little bit , it eliminates the the leverage, so you're not prone to jamming the horn into your face. But if you need more help, reach out to me on FB, instagram or Snapchat. send me a video you playing so I can actually see and hear what you're doing. Then I can give you some specific feedback. Hope this helps! 😄
@skellez837 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for your prompt and thorough reply! Each word is gold)) I don't wanna bother, but I might reach you there, sure, thanks! I feel it's more about the air stream, because I tried walking, moving the chin, the trumpet, the head, the tongue, the lips...even tried talking to the trumpet, asking politely hehe
@TheBlackTrumpeter7 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! It's no bother if you reach out. I want to help. It probably is your airstream. Just think simply...your airstream is either moving or not. If it is moving, then keep it steady. Think of your airstream like water skiing. If the boat doesn't ride at a consistent speed then the skier will sink into the water. Looking forward to helping you (and others reading this thread) out if you want it. The links to my social accounts are in the description box above the comment section.

Hello there, i liked your exercise but i have a quick question... they seem to be a variation (not so different) from the Cichowicz long tone studies. What would be the difference ? Did you based your exercise on that book? if yes, why this combination would provide a different result in your opinion?
@TheBlackTrumpeter4 жыл бұрын
This isn’t a variation of the Cichowicz. What makes this exercise effective is that it based off of a major 6th chord which is easier to play than using two octave triads. Instead of the top note being so far away ( a perfect 4th from the 5th), it’s only a whole step away from the 5th of the chord. Essentially everything is just a combination of scales and arpeggios. The only thing that makes a difference is how you approach the exercises you play.

Very nice excercise! Thanks a lot! What do you mean by TIP No. 3?
@TheBlackTrumpeter6 жыл бұрын
Robert Duis never practice when your embouchure is already tired or fatigued because it creates bad habits. So rest as much as possible.

For the beginners it would be helpful if you turn to other side and clearly show the buttons you press. Thanks for the video !

Alex Magala No problem. Thanks for watching! I honestly wouldn’t recommend this exercise for beginners but I do have the fingerings for all of the notes on the pdf

Woody Hewitson that’s awesome to hear man! How did it help?

Yeah I was struggling with my higher register, and the video on how to form my trumpet embouchure with the right technique and the slur exercise has made me play high As and Bs way more easily. So thanks lad

I play horn and trumpet (mostly horn) and I have an insane range (7 octaves). Here’s my problem though: any time that I have to go above C in the staff, I have to completely reshape and reset my embouchure and that takes a few crucial seconds. How do I fix this? (If I go higher with my regular embouchure I get terrible range and tone).

is there a reason for those alternate fingerings like high e flat being 23 or high d being 13?

I really like this exercise. Any chance you have it writen out for the next octave up?

how do you like the exercise so far since I updated it?

It's great man - I go comfortably to the double g and then rest. It feels like if I do this everyday the notes seem closer together, and speak easier.

Hi! So I am a going to be a junior in high school next year and I'm struggling to hit an A above the staff. Should I just keep playing the slur up to Ab until I'm more comfortable? Or what should I do? Thanks
@TheBlackTrumpeter3 жыл бұрын
Is Ab a comfortable note for you to play?
@tjlard39683 жыл бұрын
@@TheBlackTrumpeter G is. Not to sure about Ab.
@TheBlackTrumpeter3 жыл бұрын
@@tjlard3968 Okay. So Ab is juuuust above your edge. So I suggested to yes, continue to slur up to Ab until it becomes comfortable. Make sure you play up to that note everyday. Don't just play this exercise but also use scales, other arpeggio exercises and actual music to tackle it from different angles. You'll know you have when you can play that note at a soft dynamic with good tone and intonation. Once the Ab feels comfortable. Then move onto A. Rinse and repeat the same process.

Hey proffessor, moving the ring valve makes a difference in play tones?....
@TheBlackTrumpeter5 жыл бұрын
Yeah moving the 1st and 3rd tuning slides make a huge difference in our sound and intonation. It takes time to get the coordination down but after a while it will become second nature.
