People say they want macOs on ipad because we are tired of ipadOs being so restrictive.... But all we want is the ipad to stop simplifying everything to the point of being frustrating just to do basic things.. I mean is progress for file transfers asking too much 😡😡

Back in 2018 I took a leap as an art student and sold my Intel MacBook Pro so I could get an iPad Pro 12”. The difference was night and day and I began telling all my friends to make the jump themselves. Fast forward to my graduation three years later and I didn’t have a choice-I had to shift to an M1 iMac + pen display (Cintiq Pro 24) setup because it’s just so much more efficient and professional. I will always miss those simple iPad Pro days though

This basically confirms the experience I have had with my iPad Pro for years: even though it is amazing that so many things are possible, there always seem to be hurdles along the way, like layer limits because of memory, lack of file management, cumbersome multitasking between apps and just having a rather small screen to work with... It is an amazing device, but every time I need to use it for a more complicated job, I am so glad I can switch to desktop, as it is just more confortable and efficient.

Exactly, you can do stuff with the iPad Pro.... but that is *despite its OS* not because of it.

The problem is that when I point out that all the macOS on iPad flexors stay quiet, 99% of iPads out there have only 8GB or less! So, do you think MacOS on iPads would be anything other than awful? Remember that every 8GB MB Air review from creators claims that 8GB is a travesty of justice! The reality and Apple confirms this, is that an iPad is a complementary device for pro users; it is not a de facto replacement. And let's be straight: IT NEVER WILL REPLACE MACOS FOR PROS WANTING DESKTOP APPS.
@immortalzodd7474
@immortalzodd7474 Ай бұрын
@@andyH_England Indeed, although there some "believers" that swear they can edit video/pictures just like in their desktops. Even ignoring the RAM limitations, just the lack of proper mouse support makes that platitude a hard sell for people that enjoy the precision and productivity boost an actual mouse pointer provides. Then we have the laughable windowing support that doesn't even allow you to leverage your monitor's real state and limit you to a handful of monitors just to look anything but blurry. All of them, anti-consumer handicaps imposed by Apple just to up sell you to other products =S

@@loveArtnotFoodi know you didn’t ask me, but I personally wouldn’t recommend less than the 1TB Pro as, while I’ve had generally not had issues with 8 GB ram, my 12.9” 512 GB Pro with 8 GB of ram has had issues of force closing Procreate on me while I was working. I would imagine if Procreate can be too much for 8 GB ram then hardcore Nomad would also face similar bottlenecks.

@@loveArtnotFood even with old iPads released after 2020 nomad sculpt works fine (even in my 2017 iPad Pro nomad sculpt is manageable), but having the iPad Pro M4 with 1TB & 16GB ram surely will give you the best that iPad can offer handling Nomad sculpt 3D modeling.

Thanks for the review. Answered my exact questions regarding iPad Pro. How do you feel 2024 iPad Pro vs Kamvas Studio 16? - which is what I have now. Cons-HD screen ratio and weight:( As for the files I have a great solution for you.: Resilio sync. Ive been using it for years and recently discovered the iPad version (had no idea it existed) and it works great. Esp with full desktop iPad apps like Clip Studio. I also use it with Affinity suite. I have 5 machines, PC, NAS, Mac Mini, Kamvas Studio, iPad all syncing same folders and files. I Don’t have to deal with the file app anymore really and with selective sync on- Resilio pulls/downloads the file only when you use it. Only issue is you have to open the app when you start and finish to make sure iPad fully syncs. Can’t run in the “background”. Thanks again for the great channel.

The iPad Pro has been my travel computer for years now. It does focused computing very well. If you need to do a couple things at once it’s serviceable. When you want to do several things at once it’s cumbersome. I have a M1 iMac at home to finish most of my projects. Personally I like finished file delivery on MacOS most.

My iPad Pro 4 (2022) arrived today and I am so happy to be back on Procreate. I used to draw on an old basic iPad with the first gen Apple Pencil. I moved on to a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite some time ago and I just couldn’t stand any other art app, except Autodesk Sketchbook which was not exactly perfect. And it turns out I have to get used to the procreate interface again. I’m still double tapping the corner to undo. And it turns out that 5 coffees a day, smoking and not having drawn anything all school year, had a devastating effect on my hands and whatever little skill I used to have. Fortunately summer vacation is starting and I’ll have more time to practice.

Hi Brad. Thank you for your videos. I always enjoy watching them. 🙂 I have a question I can’t find the answer to elsewhere online I want to ask. When using the m4 iPad with SideCar, does the Apple Pencil Hover feature work with the mouse pointer in apps such as Illustrator or Photoshop? I get this functionality on a Wacom tablet but can’t determine if SideCar supports it, too.

I made the switch to iPad for all my art and the only thing I really miss is the screen real estate. but everything else just works so well for me. I essentially bought a 13 in Cintiq that I can take anywhere but can also work on its own without the need for a computer. plus if I do need more screen I just link it to my laptop and mirror my external monitor and use the iPad like an intuos tablet and it works so well in my opinion. Love my iPad but if they released a 16in model I would bite on that real hard 😆

I have the M2 iPad Pro and IMHO, just the new pen is not worth it but I do vector graphics so I cannot care less about the new brush features. If you can take advantage of the press feature, and price it as much as the upgrade, go for it. The M2 Pro has better connectivity with the Thunderbolt support which allows you to connect to external monitors, drives and docks easily. Not sure if the new Air allows it as most reviewers kind of review the iPad in a pretty shallow but maybe Brad can give it a quick test. I also agree with Brad, if it is for drawing, the 120Mhz refresh rate will benefit you more even if you dislike the mini LED screen.

Yes, I want a Mac that can do all the Surface Laptop Studio can do. That really would be the ticket. Heck, I would be happy with a Mac that can do all that a Surface Pro can do. One major annoyance with the iPad Pro. It cannot format my DAS. Disk manager of MacOS is not available on the iPad OS. Also, file management can be done but is clunky. Just make it efficient like with MacOS. Also, I use Rebelle a lot. It works fine on MacOS. No Rebelle app on iPad OS. I have used the iPad Pro with sidecar as a drawing tablet with my Mac mini but it is lagy and clunky and annoying. I would just use my Huion. Another annoying issue and it may be just me but I totally hate the lack of Save As in Procreate. Ditto for other iPad OS sketching apps.

The difference between an iPad Pro and Book4 Pro 360 is that the iPad is 10 out of 10 as a tablet, and the Book4 Pro 360 is 4 out of 10. They swap if you focus on desktop usage. So, if you insist on one device for all, it is a case of compromise either way. The easy solution-and it is not rocket science-is to buy both a tablet and a laptop! Eureka!

Managing files on the iPad is a nightmare. Was hoping they would fix that in iPadOS 18.

Hi, Great video! I do not want MacOS on an iPad. I would love to just see an improved experience. There is no progress bar showing the status of files I transfer between my iPad, servers and hard drives. The iPad files App is terrible, and not professional at all. It's actually embarrassing to use and backwards seeing that it is 2024!

As a former Zbrush user I love Nomad sculpt. For what I like doing it's good enough especially with the remesher update. No way Zbrush isn't going to be a monthly sub lol. Zbrush also never had a real lighting engine built into it as far as I remember. It just became exhausting to even bother opening Zbrush and sifting through the millions of features and menus. Might be nice if the ipad had a good box modelling software, the Nomad sculpt creator mentioned he's not really interested in adding box modelling features.

Another great video. And awesome progress on the comic! its looking really good thus far!! I just wanted to comment on the whole iPad as a replacement computer thing. I got the new M4 iPad pro. the base model 13". Do I think it can replace a computer? Like you yes but it comes with some caveats. If your a hardcore gamer, no. The iPad has come a long way as a portable gaming rig and technically you can game, I personally use Duet with my gaming computer and I can do it (though that isn't replacing my computers). The biggest thing I have learned with it being my "main" computer for a few weeks now, is that A if your keeping it free standing (not in the magic keyboard) you have to get the magic track pad. The gestures that iPad's rely on are key to easing the workflow and the magic track pad fixes that issue. The other thing I have noticed is you def need a thunderbolt hub. One thunderbolt port is not enough to replace a computer with (in my opinion) The final thing I will note for it to work as a computer, is to literally NOT TREAT IT LIKE A LAPTOP. May sound weird but if you treat it as an iPad that can do all the things you need it to do, and not try to use it as you would a laptop it will work well, honestly. Sorry for the long comment here wanted to just throw some tips out for anyone who will read this looking to replace their computer.

Your video sums it up quite nicely! While there are some aspects of the iPad that I still find appealing (started with the first, "original" one!), file system and management - or call it "document handling" as a more broader term, is still completely abysmal! Or, to put it a bit more bluntly: A big pile of sh… It was worse in the beginning, but it is still unusable for power users. The Files app still hides file extensions (and they can't be switched on), so that there's no way to distinguish file types (like PNG, JPG, TIFF, PSD) with identical icons, or variants of file types that have special properties. Long file and folder names are still a problem. Having files inside apps was a bad idea from the get-go, and it hasn't improved (as you mentioned). That's sad, because there are many things I do appreciate in iPadOS, and the iPad itself (and the Apple Pencil) is just a great device.

Apple uses sandboxing for an extra security and privacy layer, which means the file manager cannot resemble Finder like in macOS. You generally have to use the "share" feature, though Apple does allow better file management off external drives now. Unless Apple reworks the file manager for the 10% of iPad users who may need it, it is here to stay. For the 90%, the file manager is fine, bearing in mind the security and privacy benefits.

Yes, for all features like this, even Samsung, a wired connection is advised as it is free of latency.

The way that iPadOS aggressively kills processes or fails when a process (like a large file transfer) takes too long, makes me think that all the performance claims are BS. Sure it's the fastest iPad ever, but if that cant be tapped in any real terms, it might as well not be true. Functionally, it's like a Ferrari that can only drive in a small parking lot with speedbumps. I say this while having just bought the 13 pro.

iPadOS was made for one app at a time, including sandboxing and foreground/background restrictions. So, you must keep the iPad in the app if you are transferring files and have the screen stay on. Of course, it is different from macOS/Windows, and therefore, if it is not suitable, you should not buy the iPad.

My opinion (as it has been requested to all of us, kind of :D ) : It's kind of forcing it, wanting it to be what it is not yet (for professional work). As a personal mainstream device, though, it is brilliant. And I agree, as a companion tool, it can do _"some"_ professional tasks. But no good workflow for color calibration by hardware, the file system issues, can't run the industry standard professional applications on it, way too tiny screen for detailed work without constant zooming (which is the biggest con, IMO, for an illustrator and digital painter, as working most of the time with the global view for composition, is key), no easy way for drawing from the elbow or shoulder, like you can do with a Wacom L (or old XL) or a 22/24/32 inches pen display (I have both types of things) ... Hmm, I as an illustrator, and having used extensively both iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tab S, I don't see both kind of tablets, OSes and ecosystems even close for having them replacing (so, yep, not only an Apple's problem), even partially a desktop and its devices (Eizo monitor with true professional color gamut and accuracy + colorimeter, way bigger screen, large drawing tablets (pen display and pen tablet), scanner & printer, etc). There are too many problems for graphic work (including graphic design, too). When one also works on 3D gigs (and the software needed for them), the list of issues becomes endless. So, due to all the listed above (and more), it is not like I'm saying that "the solution is buying a Surface Pro" or similar Windows tablet. Many of the problem remain, as they are mostly hardware related. Of course, the industry standard applications, file system and probably color calibration would be less of an issue (although laptops rarely are wide gamut and with professional color qualities, with some exceptions like the Acer ConceptD line). Yet though, I'd be more inclined to give a better ranking to such a companion tool. Or, if at some point in history, Apple decides to release an iPad with macOS in it. And even so, a lot of my work and clients need full compatibility with Windows based software applications, and Apple has not been making that compatibility easy with its very closed ecosystem. The strong reflections (glaring screens) do make the work with color accuracy a tad worse, and this is not only happening on iPads, this is actually much worse in the Samsung tablets. The anti glare manually set films are not a solution, as they indeed do degrade too much the color intensity and other graphic matters. And it is not "impossible" to do a default anti glare coat, built-int in the monitor which does not produce these problems. I have a professional EIZO screen, that has no glare, proving that it is perfectly possible, but have also had semi professional a NEC Spectraview also proving this. I have worked with other professional monitors at companies neither having glare nor color degradation. I can't see how that level of glare can be considered professional. Apple - also with their desktop monitors- made of it one of those stubborn things that never were true, yet some hardcore fans took those as golden truths (for a long time they said than pens or pencils weren't needed and a stupid gimmick, they removed essential ports, etc, etc). Like the "Apple monitors are the best in the world". Not at all. Eizo takes that crown, and sadly nothing else. As I'd rather wish there being some true competition. Benq is doing interesting things, though, at a much lower level but very nice pricing. Large print files with many layers, and you get yet another problem: RAM. Most software out there, even very optimized apps, will be unable to handle a relatively big print resolution file with not a crazy number of layers. You just can't go farther than 16 GB. Can't call that professional. In any way. 2TB of disk is if anything a very bare minimum! For most professionals. And yet configuring that in the purchase form, and the maximum of 16 GB RAM makes the price to skyrocket, to levels that make the comparison with a Windows or Linux workstation, in cost, beyond shocking, if not actually hilarious. Even with a minimal configuration in RAM, disk, wifi-only, I checked the price, just feeling curious the other day, after the nth video hype (this is not one of that kind) on my feed about the new iPad Pro. Minimal configuration (arguable that so low disk and RAM is anything "professional"), without the keyboard as well (which would be a terrible lack), only the Pencil Pro and all minimal, still the 13 inches (as I said, already too small for pro work, *IMO* ) it jumps to 1700 euros! With that I get a fully professional Windows desktop, a workstation, at least double the RAM and many times the disk space, with tons of cores and a good enough GPU to run the so many professional (again, industry standard) applications that now require yes or yes an actual real GPU (they appear to have hard coded something that when it's integrated graphics, many won't work or not too well, if no real discrete GPU is present). And now it is not only in 3D, it's happening to in 2D applications (painting, video, etc). To add on top of all that , the screen now on the iPad Pro - luckily it is not happening in iPad AIR, much better priced, yet with finally 13 inches, and support of the pencil pro- is OLED. As much hyped as it is, the OLED technology is proved again and again to end up at certain point with burn-in issues (permanent ghost images), even with the counter measures. As if that is not enough, the PWM these iPad Pro screens have are certainly not ideal, producing certain vibration/flickering that some people never perceive (an effect is easily seen in recorded videos of it, though), but others suffer migraines from it. Some older iPad Pros didn't have such (it's not exclusive to OLED, other tech can have it, but frequent in OLED). So, the new AIR (M2) which apparently (I have to fully confirm, yet) has no PWM, and it is using the good old LCD (IPS) screen is a better option, _WAY_ more reasonably priced, too. Still with too much glare, tiny, software and OS issues, color calibration, etc, and being overall a non professional solution, but a smarter purchase (in what is the value you get for the money) for drawing on the go, IMO.
