In this video Sean gives us a 100,000 mile review of the 2014 - 2018 Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra after having driven the truck for a total of one hundred thousand miles! That's an impressive feat! More importantly is, that this is enough time behind the wheel and time of ownership to give you a thorough and non-biased review of this truck! Whether you are interested in purchasing one of these trucks, already have one, or are just curious as to how they hold up this is the video for you. Sean dives deep into the nitty-gritty about his ownership of this truck, and wants to share some of his experiences with you.
This is not a hate video about the Silverado, in fact its just the opposite. All pick-up trucks are man made machines, and because of this will have some issues. What Sean does here is to shed some light on these issues so that you can make an informed decision on purchasing a used truck like this, or be ready for possible maintenance issues down the road!
New parts for the issues Sean had on this truck:
Thermostat: amzn.to/333Vrzl
Temperature Sensor: amzn.to/3q915bY
New parts for the seat back issue Dave's truck had can be found here through GM:

@@pmarosi73 There is a class action lawsuit filed against GM as we speak. But it only covers 2014 to present. It should go all the way back to 2007 when they started their faulty AFM. This guy said it right the first time! All car brands have their shortcomings! So, knowing this I went with a 2017 Chevy Silverado. First thing I did was deleted my V4 mode to hopefully save my lifters. I then put in a lower temp thermostat for the transmission, heat and the V4 mode is a lot of the problems with the transmission. Now I know that this isn't a guaranteed fix but a little bit of preventative maintenance goes along way! If something breaks I'll fix it! Lol. I love my truck

@@TheBrothersWorkshop I did the same thing range technology. Driven 31k on milage for me is better on highway city no change. Also there is a tsb for the thermostatic valve on the trans I had it done at the dealer trans temp from 195 to 145. It lowers operating temp for trans. Fuild and filter get done every 25 k. Had rear end serviced around 70k and it got a lot quieter. Lost injector had to replace all 8 close to 80 k. Power train does not cover injectors. Other than that its been soild. 4500 mile oil change. Oh and before I bought it the ac condenser had been replaced warranty thank god. It runs much better with the afm disabler device. It was born a v8 and stays in 8. Dissapointed my 7.3l power stroke had 400k and I've had less problems with it in 20 years. Just saying.

Thank You for posting you honest thoughts, Currently driving a 2016 Sierra and like you I love the body style for the same reasons. 68,000 miles and so far so good. However my confidence is not the same as what I had in my 2002 Silverado. She was put to rest at 180,000 miles by an inattentive driver who T-boned us. Knocked the cab six inches off the frame. But that cold hard steel frame saved us from serious injury. I had with zero issues that truck. That 5.3 ran as strong as it did the day I bought it. I really do not care for all the electronic BS they have added to these things. I liked the basics of that 02. So did my Dad who taught me how to drive in a 68 Pontiac Tempest with a 350. Been a GM V8 fan since.

I also drive with some anxiety just hoping nothing major happens too. I have a 2018 and had the radiator leaking issue that the 14s and 15s are notorious for, and they wouldn't even cover it under my powertrain warranty at 52k miles because the radiator isn't covered by the PT warranty. Honestly shook my liking for GM trucks to it's core. Probably the last one I ever have so I'm enjoying my last 5.3 now.

I have a '15 Silverado LT 5.3L approaching 96K. I got it from a Chevy dealership with 21K and was a lease return. First thing I did was have the AFM disabled via a tune (pfft at 'warranty') . So far so good there. I bought a transmission pan and welded an O2 bung on it so when I serviced the filter and fluid, I'm now able to do drain & fills every other oil change (4K) which replaces about half it it. I've got the trans cooler tstat bypass to lower trans temps and crossing my fingers that the torque converter clutch stays together. No issues with a/c or antenna leaks. I've also serviced the transfer case, front and rear diffs. Driven this truck all over and love it, even with it's quirks.

Nice video, have the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 with 107,000 miles ... What I've found that mitigates/stops the clunk is a function of how one takes their foot off the gas ... When accelerating, decelerating or coming to a turn or stop DO NOT take your foot fully off the gas but instead take it off 95% for just a second to allow the trans and rear end to do it's thing and not clunk ... Yes it works ... At first it will take some time to train yourself but then you'll do it without thinking about it ... ...You're welcome ...

I just got a 2018 Silverado, the mileage when I got the truck is 48,000 miles, basically I like the truck, recently I have had a starting issue, would turn the key and just get a click, replaced the battery, that wasn’t the problem, replaced the relay, still nothing. Then I removed the starter, when I energized the starter on the bench everything seemed to work fine, even took to auto parts store they tested and could find nothing wrong, during all this running around I noticed one of the terminals had some green residue on it, so I removed all the electrical connections and cleaned them, put the starter back in and has been working.
@TheBrothersWorkshop

That green stuff is corrosion. It's very common on all vehicles, not just these trucks. making sure all of your terminals are clean is part of preventative maintenance. This corrosion can be found on the battery and the starter. Definitely the first thing you should check when having these problems.

I have a 2017 GMC Yukon with the 5.3 and six speed transmission with 42,000 miles. So far, the only issue was a leaky intake gasket, which was fixed under warranty. There is a very experienced transmission rebuild shop near me. The owner told me if my transmission ever goes bad, he can rebuild it with much beefier aftermarket parts that will last much longer. I also used a programmer to deactivate the 4-cylinder mode. What a dumb idea that system is. The Yukon drives and shifts so much better with that system deactivated. I also installed a catch can. A catch can is a good idea on these direct injection engines. It seems buying any newer vehicle, one never knows if it will be a good purchase, or a bad one. That goes for any brand, they all have their issues in one way or another.

I have a 14 silverado 5.3 double cab and I hate it! So many annoying problems, I regret buying it. Everything he mentions in this video are all true and still more. He missed the lower driver seat apolostery ripping, as well as for the middle 3rd seat/ arm rest console also having cracking leather plus the steering wheel, and the 3 or all 6 welds of the A/C condenser crack open, causing the a/c system to have a leak, the transmission problems are all true, the converters go out and lifters, and for the most part I recommend getting a oil catch can due to how dirty and clogged up this truck engine can accumulate. ect... I strongly agree the body and front lights are awesome but the problems it came with are not worth it at all in my opinion. Thank you for making such great content and for trying to spread the word. I hope people take this into consideration and are lucky to read or watch the video before purchasing this truck. I bought a 2014 Z71 1500 with the 5.3 in December, 2013. A/C condenser developed a leak and was replaced under warranty. Blower motor starting making noise, but it turned out to be a big leaf that got into the squirrel cage. Those were only issues that I had with the truck in the 82k miles that I owned it. Traded for a 2017 2500 HD with the 6.0 in summer of 2017 due to needing to pull a larger trailer. The 2500 has slightly over 74k miles as I speak and it has had absolutely zero issues. Oil changes at 5k and a new set of tires is everything that it has had done. The 2014 was a good truck but the 2017 is an outstanding truck.

That AC condenser is a serious issue with those 2014-15 trucks. They fixed the issue in the later models. We recently upgraded to a 2017 GMC Sierra. Video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipaXmYKnl6eCkLugooked We also looked at a 2500HD but the max towing and fuel economy made us stick with the 1500. At the end of the day it our decision was based on MPG and if the truck would fit into our garage. I know that 6.0 is an all around great motor. Sounds to me like you have a great truck!

A 100k is not alot of miles honestly with good maintenence. 200k and more is normal for the 5.3s. The older models held up alot better. Unfortunately the newer models are made way cheaper and get worse as they get newer. Ive had trucks with 40 inch tires and lift kits over 250k with original motors and trannys with good proper care. Chevy step your game up, Stop makin trucks only to live to see 100k before they shit the bed. $40k isnt chum change.

I have a 09 Nissan Titan with less than 90K, and other than my kids running into stuff and my wife backing into a tree it has had zero problems. 3K oil changes in my garage, it's the base model with manual roll down windows. I feel like it's the end of an era truck. I paid $26k for it back in 2009 New and it has the 5.6L V8 with gobs of power, also has tow package and that's the only option. The tow package is gearing and trans cooler, it's fast as crap too which was a nice surprise, but I'm starting to shop because I'm going to gift it to my 16y/o son and although I will still have to borrow it for truck duty, I'm not going to be a dick and hold the keys over his head, I'm going to let him have it and not look back. I thought I'd keep it forever and that was the plan when we bought it, but he's loved it his whole life basically, he's an 06' model, so the truck is 3 years younger than he. I've got older kids that I put in rougher cars and we just got lucky, but life is unpredictable and can be unkind, especially lately. I love him and I don't want him driving something unreliable that could put him in a bad position if it effs up in the wrong place. I can always get another truck.

Had about 20k miles on it and the A/C condenser went out -- but they wouldn't fix it because I was past the 36 month warranty but I paid for the parts and they ate the labor. 2nd, I have that tranny "clunk" that you talk about from day 1. It was never bad enough to take back to dealer to see if it was an issue but it is always there especially when tranny is cold and I am driving slow out of the neighborhood. It is 2022 now and I only have 44k miles on it but your mention of the lifters is bothering me. I'll definitely look out for that issue. BTW, my "tailgate assist" thing just quit working one day years ago. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the GPS antenna seal because we get tons of rain down here. With that in mind, I do get a musty smell every time I start my truck and the fan is blowing. I have tried many things to get that to go away but it won't. I needed a truck for my company, I researched the best Era on line,watched you tube asked local shops and part stores. The newer the more their is too go wrong. 19 and newer trans failure in low milage trucks electrical problems. One I know bought 2021 new has lot of electrical problems, one his PCM failed around 30,000 miles still waiting for the part a year later. Most I asked recommended the 98 or 03 I bought the 2003, main problems the guages fail, o2 sensor failure and rusty brake lines. Had that happen soon after I bought the truck.

The 03 you have is almost 20 years old. If those issues are the only problems, than you've got a truck and a good deal. They rusty fuel lines are just normal wear and tear. As for the 21s, I'm also hearing that a lot of those are having the electrical issues. The 2014-18 aren't terrible if you get a newer/work truck model. Are you happy with your purchase?

Yep GM refuses to fix any problem they can pass onto you. I’ve been a GM guy my whole life. It hurts me to do it but from now on I’m going to but imports. Dam shame the big three want to charge an arm and a leg for their vehicles but all are is polished turds. Oh and now they have three different levels of AC Delco parts. So now you can pay full price for a cheap autozone part they call original. What a crock of sh!?

John, things can always be worse. Ford uses a lot proprietary parts, including the oil! If you don't use their special parts, your truck will not last. More reason to stick with GM. At least we can still buy aftermarket parts without worry of them breaking our trucks.

I have two issues with 2014. The cruise control only works if you dont change lanes. However, I had a bunch of front end parts go bad. I had them replaced and it started working again. The traction control light stays on but now one knows the fix. Perhaps its in the steering column or a ground. GM cant find the issues or the fixes. No recalls to my knowledge either. Not sure if anyone is having some of the same issues.

I have a 2017 Z71 crew cab with 31k. I dread the issues you mention. Already changed the ATF with Amsoil OEM synthetic fluid. Installed a catch can a couple of years ago. I should find a tuner that can adjust the shift points to help the torque converter and turn off the stupid AFM. I don't like a lot of things about this truck. I prefer the older ones. I will have to stay at it to make it last. I don't want to buy another regardless of the brand.

But wait there is more!!!! 120,000 review......I own 2014 Chevy Z71 5.3L, Crew Cab..These trucks have serious problems with transmissions!!! As well as oil consumption. The only way to lessen/get rid of the oil consumption problem is to have the AFM system off, and it in V8 all the time. Replace the transmission with something different then the Chevy one that is offered(Remanufactured with better specs) . I am having to replace my whole transmission. These new "adapted" transmissions have serious problems. Chevy made them to adapt to your driving patterns to make the transmission last longer so they said. (That is where the original clunk sound thought came from, turns out driveshaft). The torque converter is horrible. Alot of the problems they are finding out after replacing the transmissions, were that the torque converter has a design issue. By the time you figure out its the torque converter anyways, it is too late. It was know early on right after they built them. Dealers will tell you they are "know for the rough shifts". I found out the hard way. There are MANY articles on this problem with this year!!!!

@rs_pa
@rs_pa 5 ай бұрын
A tuner can disable AFM, but you would still have the same issue prone lifters. I use a Range device that plugs into the OBD port that also defeats the AFM & keeps it in V8 mode all the time.101k miles with no lifter issues. Defeating the AFM doesn't totally eliminate lifter failure, but lessens the possibility of lifter failure. Only real fix is to remove the heads & replace the lifters & oil tray with conventional lifters & oil tray not designed for AFM, an expensive modification.

I have a 2014 Sierra that I bought used with 55,000 miles on it in 2017. I've had the AC condenser replaced and had to have the transmission rebuilt at 100, 000. I'm at 104,000 now, and the rebuilt trans still downshifts hard sometimes as I'm coming a stop. Fingers crossed for the lifters in my 5.3. I've got the dash rattles, and I'm going to retighten it all when it warms up in the spring.
@TheBrothersWorkshop
@TheBrothersWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Good luck with the rattles. I think it's just a matter of tightening a few screws. Sean just upgraded to a 2017 Sierra, and it doesn't have nearly as many rattles for some reason, but it still has that hard transmission shift. Good luck with your truck and let us know how the next 100k go!

Take off your tow brake grading...hold in tow button for 5 secs or so and it disengages it. It helps with the transmission issues. You have to do this every time you start your vehicle unfortunately.

@@Drumsticksmcgee I traded the Sierra for a new Silverado in '22, shortly after that post. It had continued to be a money pit, and I found some serious rust in the rocker panels just as it was coming due for its annual state inspection. How about your oil pressure? I have an 09 silverado with 118.890 miles and have about 25 psi while driving and 5-8 psi while idle. So pretty low... I did a motorflush with medic motor, changed the oil pressure sensor and filter under it, pickuptube o-ring, and clean the filter on pickuptube too. Still same pressure after all work so im going towards a new oilpump. Seems pretty low milage to me for a new pump already though... Loud ticking sound from the lifters and my 6l80 have a hard time to find 2nd gear very often.. They not built like they used to. 😕

Reminiscent of the '70s C/K10s. That's what it. I couldn't quite place why I fell in love with the 14-18s. I had a '79 C10 short bed and I loved that true square body. Just gave up the '99 Tahoe I had for almost 10 years for an '18 Z71 with 15k on it. I didn't want to get rid of the Tahoe, but the last 5k I put on it took out all the steering and suspension except the passenger side leaf pack. $4k and that didn't even adress the $2k in work in the driveway I needed to do. My dad and best friend knew how much I loved that Tahoe and how much I hate spending money, and neither believed I got rid of the Tahoe for something that costed me so much. Also, the lift issue is probably be the engine is being babied. All engines are designed to run wide open. Not winding it out at least once a trip leads to carbon build up and gummed up oil passages. It also reduces the life of your cats. You can see and smell a babied engine when it is finally opened up when the driver punches it to get in front of a semi on the highway. I've always done that and I've never had engine issues from the '72 Impala all the way up to the '08 Impala I had.
