I’d encourage her to check out free coding resources online, like W3 schools, for example. They offer free tutorials on programming languages like Python, Java, and C, plus other things like HTML, CSS, AND SQL. When she’s ready, she can take an exam (for a fee) to obtain a certificate (or certificates). The cost is significantly less than the coding course would be. Saying this as someone who looked at a coding bootcamp through a well-known university, but it would have cost well over $10,000. I’m going this route instead, encouraged to by my software engineer husband.

I hope she sees this, because these schools tell you anything to get your money and when u graduate you cannot get a job.

Another great Real People Budget. This is a great example of how splitting up your payments, properly, can afford you to split up your paychecks to better accommodate your bills. I struggled with that in the beginning. Now, we're a month ahead and our due dates better accommodate our pay schedule.

I would suggest that she waits until after she moves and maybe extend out another 12 months before she buys a car. New York has good public transportation. Car insurance is very expensive and off the street parking is not cheap.

I would call that 10,000 the emergency fund and NOT use if for a coding course. She could probably get scholarships to cover at least some of that course. Also - 20K seems really high for a medical coding course (I assume that's the coding we are talking about?) - most would be around 3-5K. There is alot of extra she could cut in the budget for a short time (less than a year) - get rid of eating out, beauty, Spotify, KZbin TV (you can get regular KZbin for free), vacation savings. I have never spent $700 for a birthday - children will be happy with a simply fun celebration and simple gifts. $150 for a planner? Target sells beautiful ones for like $20. I would go bare bones for about a year and knock out all the debt. I personally did this for over 2 yrs and paid off 6 figures of student loans.
@NinaDreams81
@NinaDreams81 Жыл бұрын
The coding course is most likely a computer programming course. There are a lot of coding bootcamps that cost around 20K. The problem is that some boot camps are scams, so I hope she is doing her research. I'd rather do the free courses online. I'm a software engineer, and there are a ton of good free resources.

I would never rely on child support. If they are offsetting his refund, the lump sum could come…or he could have been smart enough to adjust his withholding and she gets $0 as he no longer has a refund coming. Sometimes it’s a “one and done” type thing once their refund gets offset the first time.

She's been a single mom for 12 years it's highly unlikely that it would be a one and done thing at this point. She feels it's reliable enough to include, and considering that she excludes her freelance income because it isn't reliable I think she knows her situation.

I am pretty sure that she and most financial advisors would say pay off debt before worrying about investing because you are not going to earn in interest in your investments what you are paying in interest. Knock out that debt after you have an emergency fund and then you can focus on saving and investing

The thing I love about watching this channel is you don’t even really need the planner. Buying a vehicle, buying a home, and moving to another state don't seem to be realistic goals given her income and location. She's benefiting from some low income benefits (e.g. rent) so she should continue to utilize those. She should focus solely on the coding course and eliminating cc debt.

Electric, water, and gas in that order. Unless the internet is necessary for school/work, drop it for now. Set up fixed monthly payment plans. That saved me plenty of times when my electric skyrocketed. Then pay a little more on the highest till they are all caught up.

Great question - I’m wondering the same. For my personal situation, I’m holding off on paying. Though it’s in my budget for July. Since there is no back pay interest, I’m deciding to put my income to better use - savings! And that way the money is there to tackle the loan debt if it comes time.

I would put the car goal on a longer time frame. Because it is more than just buying the car. Insurance is very high & off- street parking is very high. New York has one of the best public systems of Transportation. Right now I don't think that she would utilize her car enough to justify the added monthly expenses. It's better to wait til 12 months after she moves...imho
