I respect the example that this Bishop sets, but it stands out mostly in contrast to the majority of other American Catholic Bishops, which is frankly, scandalous, IMO. I have to take issue with the idea that the Apostle John set an example of manhood by being at the foot of the Cross as Jesus died on it, not because his behavior was wrong, far from it, but because he wasn't yet a man, I believe that he was a child at the time that Jesus walked the Earth. When you study this, the case for my assertion is compelling. First of all, we know that he died on the island of Patmos at about 90 A.D. if he was an adult at an age comparable to the other Apostles, say around 30, that would have made him about 120 at the time of his death. Not impossible strictly speaking, but very unlikely compared to the average age span of then or even now. Moreover, he exhibited many behaviors characteristic of a child. At the Las Supper, he laid his head in Jesus' lap. That is a degree of familiarity that the other Apostles regarded as unthinkable, yet was accepted by Jesus without objection or rejection. Because he was a child? There are other examples of this familiarity, but I'll skip forward to the period of His Passion and Crucifixion. When the Temple guards came to arrest Jesus in Gethsemane, Peter drew his sword, and brought down what normally would have been a death blow on one of the guards, but he probably twitched to the side and his ear was apparently not protected by the helmet and was sliced off. Jesus saved Peter's life by instantly healing the guard'ear, and although Jesus rebuked him because it wasn't part of God's plan of salvation for mankind, Peter technically kept to his word that he would die for him. Peter gets a bad rap for his three times denial of Jesus, but it is important to note that the other Apostles scattered to the four winds. Except for John. Was he more brave than the other Apostles? I don't think so, he went along with Jesus to the Temple grounds without fear, and unlike Peter, who was publicly called out, he was unchallenged, even to the foot of the Cross. How? Back then, men generally and the Temple Sanhedrin in particular did not take women or children seriously, and they were not held to the same level of accountability. It was the custom and the thinking of the time. Later on, when Jesus, before dying, told John to "behold thy mother." I don't think that this was the grand universal appointment to being appointed to being the queen of heaven, rather, he was making them a foster family. While John was being told to care for her, and undoubtedly this was true in the later years, I think that she was being told to raise him to adulthood. Then as now, when Jews because believers in Jesus, they were typically rejected by their families. He hadn't been at home for some time, and was likely no longer welcome. He was a boy, and I think that Mary raised John. And who better to teach John about Jesus than His mother? The three synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Luke and Mark are different in character than John's, which at the same time the deepest and most intimate, personal, and at the same time intensely profound. This hypothesis could go a long way to explain the distinct character of this Gospel. John's manhood came much later than at the Cross, because there he was still a boy. The other assertion of Bishop Strickland that I differ with is the appointment of Mathias to the Apostleship. We know from the book of Revelation that there were twelve Apostles, and the Apostle Paul's "out of time" designation of Paul as an Apostle "to the gentiles" by Jesus Christ Himself. If we were to accept Mathias as an Apostle, there would have to be thirteen Apostles in Heaven, not twelve. Don't get me wrong, Mathias was no doubt a great saint, but he lacks the status of an Apostle. I hope that this has been helpful.♥️✝️

*I* would say that he nailed the problem right on the head: the issue that has wrecked society is not masculinity, but *false* masculinity disguised as *true* masculinity.... he got that detail spot on right, yet we are *required* to judge, as if we do not judge, we won't discern what's right verses what is morally wrong and to be condemned, that leads to two options, and only two: accept everything, good and bad alike, and thus go to Hell, or wipe everything out due to rejecting both good and bad, and go to Hell likewise; neither is even remotely acceptable to Christ- especially for those of us who'd prefer to serve our neighbors as He insisted upon.

The Bishop seems very knowledgeable about Catholic Doctrine. He seems very humble just like Jesus. Unless I misunderstand Catholic Doctrine, family planning through different birth control methods doesn’t seem sinful in my eyes in a marriage relationship. It’s seems appropriate in this current age. The Church (in my opinion) needs to update its teaching. Frankly, trying to raise 4 kids in this day and age is almost impossibly because costs of basic necessities. Unless you limit the amount of kids you have, you won’t be able to give them the attention they need. Abstinence is a great way to go but in the real world look at the mess we are in.

Dear Bishop Strictland Please explain the reasons we continue to sacrifice Christ daily and continually knowing Jesus was sacrificed ONCE for all sin for all time. Do Catholics believe the sacrifice of His Body and Blood was all- sufficient and fully accepted in the Holy of Holies? Or that it needs to be repeated? Also, where in the Catholic Church is the burden for reaching lost sinners with the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Doesn’t it appear most Catholics are quite content to practice their religion but quite unconcerned with reaching the lost sinner and uninvolved with seeing lost sinners saved ? Being a real man is also specially being able to understand the reality and not only theories or ideologies (ideologies are when you just look at ideals)... Like saying "sex only in marriage" is all good, we can all understand that, it works well in theory, but as human beings the virtue of temperance, justice and all the others make us want to understand situations and not just theory. The problem of a faith mostly lived intellectually or in theory brings a lot of problems to the Church and society (the main reason the Church can have many many issues nowadays and fewer people converting). And that's also specially being a man, understanding realities and not just understanding the theory which can really hurt people. A devoted and practicing Catholic here and yes I do pray my rosary, also many per day sometimes. So to all those being too scrupulous, or puritans, you hurt the Church. I do appreciate the talk here, our faith, but our faith does teach to not just be theorists and applying theories... Our faith and life is much more than that. Hence I really love Pope Francis who helps us to make us more virtuous in that sense, I do love all the other popes as well of course, but theory without the reality becomes sinful (both are centrals to understand in our faith and morality)... It is like natural sciences without the applied sciences in some way. Also philosophical sciences are different than natural sciences, it was just to give an example here. Our faith is incarnated, it is not something only in theory.

The word "anti" in antichrist does not mean someone who is going to be openly anti (against) Christ. That word "anti" in the original Bible language can actually mean "IN PLACE OF". So could the bible antichrist be someone who has actually put himself "in place of" Christ? Well, we have further Bible evidence to support this. In 1 John 2:18-19 it says that there were "many antichrists", who "WENT OUT FROM THE CHURCH". In other words, John is pointing to the fact that those "antichrists" were WITHIN THE CHURCH!! Not only that, but Paul in 2 Thess. 2:3-4 calls the man of sin the "son of perdition". Now there is only one other place in the Bible where the name "son of perdition" is used, and that is in John 17:12 talking about JUDAS! And what was Judas? A professing follower of Christ Jesus. Someone who deceived from WITHIN the "church". "The leader of the Catholic church is defined by the faith as the Vicar of Jesus Christ (and is accepted as such by believers). The Pope is considered the man on earth who TAKES THE PLACE of the Second Person of the omnipotent God of the Trinity." (John Paul II, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, p. 3, 1994). "ANTI" - Christ = "IN PLACE OF" Christ!

Part of the cause of toxic masculinity: the hateful and insulting writings of Paul about women which are in opposition to the way that Christ talked of and treated women. Paul never met Jesus when they were both in the flesh, so did not know of Christ's respect and love for women. And probably most of us would also not realize Christ's respect and love for women had it not been for John's recording of Christ's treatment of women in the Book of John. Paul was describing women as a Pharisee would because Paul was a Pharisee, he was using Jewish law in his writings about women. For example, he writes that Cephus (Peter) was the first to see Christ after his Resurrection. But this is incorrect, we know that it was either Mary Magdalene, or, as Catholicism believes, Mary, his mother. Mary Magdalene has been called the "Apostle to the Apostles," because it was she who was given the honor of seeing him first. So why does Paul say that Peter saw Christ first? Because of Jewish law, that a woman's testimony is not believable or as valuable as a man's, so Paul places Peter as first witness to the greatest event in the history of humankind. And the ignoring of women was actually a formal convention of the time, and is seen elsewhere in the Bible where Christ is said to have fed the "5,000." In fact, Christ could have fed 20,000 or more that day, but the convention of the time was to record only the men. Many of these men had women and children with them, for example, but they simply were not included in the count. Another conflict with Christ in Paul's writings. Paul makes it clear that he is speaking for himself in some of his letters. An example: Paul says that "I WILL NOT suffer a woman to teach a man." And it's clear here that Paul is talking about himself, what HE will "suffer," not talking from divine inspiration from the Holy Spirit or Christ's examples. So this is Paul's opinion and has nothing to do with God. And the incident of Jesus with the woman at the well illustrates this so well. When she realizes who he is (not having to "ask her husband") the woman runs excitedly to her village to tell people about Jesus. Jesus doesn't stop her, and say, "I will not suffer a woman to teach men," but lets her go. She brings people back who listen to Jesus and believe. But then John notes, making an observation of the prejudice against women of the time, that the people who believed said they did so because they met him, not because she told them about him. And the woman at the well has been called "the first evangelist." Another example of Christ's love and respect for women: the incident with Mary and Martha. Mary wants to study directly under Jesus, but Martha protests, wanting Mary to work in the kitchen instead. But Jesus defends Mary, and says "this will not be denied her." Are his words the first support for education for women? I think so. At the same time, Jesus does not criticize Martha, the traditionalist type of woman, who might actually want to live according to Paul's interpretations. Jesus loves and respects both types of women, the traditionalist (Martha) and the nontraditionalist (Mary). It was the same way at the Cross. Who was with him then? It was the women, the two Marys, the traditionalist woman, His mother, and the nontraditionalist woman, Mary Magdalene. And it was the women on the streets of Jerusalem who wept for him. But where were the men? All of his disciples, except John, had betrayed him. Do I think that pointing out the prejudices and mistakes of Paul negates his other teachings or the Bible itself. Emphatically Not! It's made clear through the New Testament that the Disciples and Paul are full of faults and mistakes. Paul started out as a murderer! But he was changed by Christ, and still has much to offer. And the disciples made many mistakes, especially Peter, the first Pope. But do their mistakes mean their teaching and work to spread the word is null? Absolutely not. Especially Peter, who makes one mistake and misinterpretation after another! But he always does something to redeem himself, he follows Christ, despite his own opinions, or despite when he simply doesn't understand what Christ means. As Bishop Strickland observes, the Apostles were human and made mistakes. The only one who never made any mistakes was Jesus. So we can relate to the mistakes made by the disciples and by Paul, the apostle, because we all make mistakes and sin ourselves. It's important to understand that none of them were perfect, and the Bible makes this clear. So it certainly does not make the Bible look bad if one points out the faults of Paul. Yet, many in the Church have tried to deify Paul because they like what he has to say about women. They want to keep women under control and this alienates half of the human race from the Church. They don't care if they chase people away from God because they want to keep women under control and satisfy their own egos. I've been to some Churches who quote Paul more than they do Jesus! With a lot of churches, they start out with some lip service to Jesus, but then move on to what they really like--Paul and his hateful and insulting remarks about women. And it's a big problem and why many are alienated by Churches.

Hi @josephdsilva5245, Thanks for the comment. I cannot recall, because it has been a while since we launched this, did we discuss rosaries being prayed for that intent, for the 3rd secret of Fatima? Regarding your second question. To me, it would appear we need to define terms. The monotony of the Rosary, specifically the continuous praying of the Hail Marys, is something that is incredibly blessed and fruitful for the soul. It allows one to enter into the mystery of Christ's life in a way that is not academic but open to grace and a deeper understanding. It also comes with it no expected goal, the intent is to meditate and reflect on the life of Christ. St. Josemaria even went as far as to say "Blessed be that monotony of Hail Marys which purifies the monotony of your sins!" The official Catholic answer about saying the rosary is; just keep doing it. Jesus’ answer is: Don’t pray repetitious prayers like the heathen do. You choose!

This is a misread of scripture. Christ himself told us to pray the Our Father, should we only pray it once and never again? Christ himself prayed the same prayer 3 times in the Garden before His passion and death, did He pray like the heathens? Of course not. Proof texting Scripture to fit the subjective understandings of your choice is a dangerous place to be.

@@TheCatholicGentleman No. We should pray it regularly, sincerely, thoughtfully, reverently and in true faith but not repetitiously, thinking that our much speaking will gain us a hearing. God is willing to answer our prayers but will not be manipulated or persuaded by our efforts. Or by going thru others to get to Him. “He who was willing to give us his only Son, is willing with Him to give us all things besides.” We are to simply ask Him in faith, believing. Doing so truly honors Him and demonstrates our love and trust. Nowhere did Jesus teach us to come to the Father thru anyone but Him. In fact He said; no one cometh unto the Father but by Me. I am the Door The Gate The Mediator Anyone who come in any other way is a thief and a robber…. Could He have been any plainer?

@douggreenway7283 I am struggling to follow your thought process. At first it seemed like you were arguing against praying the Rosary, it then seems like you are open to it. Which is it? Finally, you never responded to a single one of my mentions from Scripture about repetitious prayer.
