3 of the most exquisite voices in the world (Floor Jansen, Anneke van Giersbergen, and Marcela Bovio) come together in this mysterious and mesmerizing performance.
Valley of the Queens is from the Ayreon Universe, found by composer/musician Arjen Lucassen. He writes specifically for each artist - which is evident, by how beautiful he has written for these three women.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to "Valley of the Queens" for the first time.

Hi Elizabeth, it just popped up in my feed now here in Denmark so it looks like it has been unblocked here atleast. If you want to get a true flavour of Ayreon, their most reacted to video is "The Day That The World Breaks Down". It's a 13-minute song, which is the opening track from the album "The Source", and it features 11 different singers. Naturally, all their parts within the song are quite short, and there are long instrumental passages too (in various styles), but I guess 11 vocalists will give you a lot to analyse! Arjen also made a very interesting and entertaining video, which is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXfYfn6ap9-Dp7c. It might not be the best suited for your style of reaction, but you might enjoy watching it anyway.

@frankroos1167

Personally, the best way to get a true flavour of Ayreon is to get a full album and listen to it end-to-end. Although individual songs are absolutely fanatstic, a full album is really the best way to appreciate Arjen's work. A single song out of an opera doesn't make the opera. That really goes for these things from Ayreon. Also, you will hear more of the rock thing. This particular song, as beautiful as it is, doesn't really rock. It fits really well within the Electric Castle, though. It won't be good for a reaction video, though. These albums are kind of looooooooong....although still too short.

I think Everybody Dies is a good primer. Lots of singers. More rock. Floor is in there, too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3KkiaeLmbJqrqc Castle Hall is another good punchy one. In Belgium we had the 'Metal Female Voices Fest', a 3 day festival and a combi ticket costed around 83€. In 2013 this was just a part of the line up for Sunday: Tarja, ReVamp (band with Floor Jansen), Anneke Van Giersbergen , Stream of Passion (band with Marcela),.... It was a very chill festival and most of the time band members watched the other shows from within the crowd. At the time I didn't understand how lucky I was and I'm afraid I will never have the chance again to have such an experience. I had the luck to see Anneke perform in a local bar for a very intimate acoustic set. She made some mistakes on her guitar but with her smile and silly jokes you looked past that.

I loved this reaction. Always great to see a knowledgeable musical mind react to Ayreon. I'd recommend doing The Day that the World Breaks Down next as not only is it a big song with eleven singers involved, it also has annotations made by Arjen that will further shed light on the song, the singers, the musicians, and also some of the gear that's being used. I think it's a great step off point to get into this project.

Aye, Anneke would really deserve some central stage time in this channel by now. Imo her performances at the The Gathering TG25 concert doing 'Travel' and 'On most surfaces' are quite exemplary of her stunning vocal capabilities and impressive sound. Add their live version of 'Strange Machines' on Pinkpop '96 and you get both a nice picture of her development through the decades, while also getting an idea of how she inspired a whole generation of lead female metal singers and while getting a hunch of The Gathering's grunge and Pink Floyd roots and inspiration. Anneke explored a very broad range of styles, with maybe only progrock elements and her unique vocal presence as a common denominator. The 2015 Masters of Rock performance of 'The Storm' by Anneke's and Arjen's mutual proggy project 'The Gentle Storm' is also worth a listen as it shows both an excellent Anneke as lead and Marcela as support. Both rougher and lighter stuff by Anneke and Devin with The Devin Townsend Project is also worth experiencing: varying from 'Kingdom' and 'Grace' in the Retinal Cicrcus show to 'Ih Ah'. Finally, Anneke's cooperations with Danny Cavanagh and similar artists along with her solo acoustic performances are worth a listen. Edit: Oh, and might I mention Ayreon's 'Comatose' performed by Anneke and Katatonia's Jonas Renske? :)

Dear Elizabeth, Ayreon albums are in the genre 'Progressive' rock, in wich everything can happen. Some of his albums are more rock/folk others are rock/metal. This song is from 'Into the electric castle' wich is a more rock/folk album. The song I suggested a couple of times 'the day that the world breaks down' is from the album 'the source' and thats more of a rock/metal album. This song has all 11 singers in it that are featured on this album. The day before yesterday (25 sept. 2020) his latest album 'transitus' was released btw.

you have a great ear for detail - I never would have noticed the slightly different starts on the final phrase. I love the genuine enthusiasm in your reactions! i’d be cool to see your take on Marcela Bovio’s lead work. Her old band Stream of Passion has an Ayreon connection - it was originally formed as a side project of Arjen Lucassen. I’d recommend A War of Our Own. Or her current band MaYaN’s song Dhyana - like Valley of the Queens it’s a gentle song compared to the rest of the band’s songs, but it beautifully showcases both Marcela’s and Laura Macri’s vocals (the band has a whopping 5 vocalists)

Hi Elizabeth. Oh, how wonderful it is you discovered Ayreon my favorite "band" even more than Nightwish or Epica. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. Your're reactions are just the best, I just love how you ooze enjoyment listening for the first time to my favorite music. There's a lot to talk about. Starting with the wonderful and very talented Jeroen Goossens the man with the flute. At the moment he's a member of the instrumental band Flairck and has done a lot of Ayreon through the years. He reacted to a reaction video of flutist Heline where he wrote: "In fact those are 2 Irish low whistles (indeed big tin whistles), one tuned in D and the other one tuned in C Indeed 6 holes on the front, but also 1 on the back (which is kinda rare) " All three ladies have sung Valley of the queens at one time or another by themselves and all three have been loyal contributors to the Ayreon projects through the years. You know all about Floor by now and I would encourage you to do more Floor reactions, there's no such thing as too much Floor in my book. Anneke,.... the grandmother of dutch "female fronted metal" and inspiration of Floor and Simone Simmons and everyone after her. I can't describe how much I love Anneke. I love her work with her former band "the Gathering" and I would love a reaction to her tribute to mozart "The Gathering - Travel" their 25 years reunion concert is a great rendition. Also from the same concert "The Gathering - On Most Surfaces" is a great showcase of Anneke's unique voice. She's done a lot with Devin Townsend who revers to her as "heavy metal Tinkerbell", she spreads magic everywhere she sings. Want to see some magic between Devin and Anneke? Look no further than Ih Ah,... You are going to LOVE it, especially considering you are already a fan of Devin. I do sometimes wonder if Devin's wife enjoyed that concert though,.... I would melt if Anneke looked at me that way :D There is so much more but I just have to stop. Marcela is maybe the lesser known of the three and that's a crying shame as she's just as good as the other two. The intricacies of the harmonies you heard where probably from her hand as Arjen works with her on these things. I'm very happy to say she recently recovered from a serious health scare and is now completely cancer free. She had her own band "Streams of Passion" which started in 2005 as an Ayreon sideproject and developed from there until they disbanded in 2016. She now sings in Mayan and also does a lot of backing vocals, for example for Epica. Want to see what she's capable of and want to see Arjen Lucassen and his girlfriend Lori Linstruth on guitar (a very rare sight, I will explain further on). "Stream Of Passion - Passion (Rijssen)". She was one of the lead vocal's on the Ayreon album "the Human equation" which later was developed in a live show called "the Theater Equation" from that concert I would highly recommend one of my favorite Ayreon songs: The Theater Equation - Day Four Mystery Ayreon is a long going project by musical genius Arjen Lucassen. It's a blend of rock, metal, folk, blues. One of the big names in prog. When you get invited to an Ayreon project you can be assured you are one of the best. The list of star performers that worked with Arjen and keep working with him is huge. "The Day That The World Breaks Down" video is not live but it is a great introduction in what Ayreon is all about and you have 11 singers to analyse :) . Arjen (and Lori) are known to be very reclusive in their lives and he rarely performs because he's got tremendous stage fright and is very uncomfortable in front of a crowd. That he does it anyway is such a brave thing to do. Lori stopped playing the guitar, she stated she doesn't enjoy it anymore. It's a shame because she's amazing. She does however play a huge part in the Ayreon projects behind the scenes. And she wrote the lyrics of one of the Ayreon sideprojects: Guilt Machine. From that side project comes my recommendation "Ayreon - Twisted Coil (Electric Castle And Other Tales)" with the amazing Damian Wilson on vocals. Damian is one of my favorite metal singers of all time. He even was considered as the replacement when Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden. Due to practical travel considerations they decided to choose someone else at the time. I would also very much recommend a performance Arjen himself called one of his favorites. From the Ayreon Universe concert: Ayreon - And The Druids Turned To Stone. Ah heck because it's so much fun, from the same concert: Ayreon - Intergalactic Space Crusaders (Universe) Well I've been rambling on much to long now, kudos if you've come this far without losing interest :) But that's what you get when you react to my favorite music :D Cheers!

Ayreon is such a deep well of talent to explore. It seems many people have reacted to 'The Day that the World Breaks Down' as their introduction, and it's a great start with 11 different singers. Arjen comments throughout the video about the story, singers, instrumentalists and the gear he used on the album. It's 13 minutes that feels like it goes so quickly.

Nice choice, IMHO, to give reaction. The feel of a round, Celtic in nature, and definitely one I really like, too. As lush and lovely as the entire piece is, I'm especially blown away by the ending. As you pointed out, it's so lovely, but for me the big selling point is that it's a capella, which raises the delicacy and beauty to an even higher level. The entire concert is stellar; no doubts there. I love that delicate, acoustic driven pieces like this imbued the overall show with a ton more emotion by providing a sense of texture that prevented it from becoming just another progressive metal show, while also showcasing the broad talents of Arjen Anthony Lucassen.
