For years I have heard the call to listen to Nina Hagen for a theatrical voice unrivaled by many. And what better way to pair that with some symphonic metal by none other than Apocalyptica, two firsts in one video, on a Rammstein cover no less! What started as a Metallica tribute band turned into a neoclassical metal style, right up my newfound alley!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Apocalyptica featuring Nina Hagen for the first time, performing "Seemann”.

Nina Hagen is a trained opera singer and the Queen of German Punk since the '80s. Nina Hagen can appear kinda strange, but nobody can deny her unique voice, I personally think she nailed this cover and she is iconic in Germany. Also, her daughter is the actress Cosma Shiva Hagen.

Both Nina and Till were born in former East Germany. Nina was classically trained as a opera singer and pianist including stage craft.. She starred in movies with her actress mother. She moved first to Poland where she started to do solo performances before returning to East Berlin where she sang in a rock band called Autombil.. Then later to West Germany and started of with classical performances before turning completely around and was put together with some session musicians to form a punk band (The Nina Hagen Band). They soon split up and the band went on as Spliff. Nina went through a true Rock 'n roll lifestyle of drink, drugs and various turbulent relationships. She moved to America, started writing reggae and pop songs, went into heavy metal music, returned to pop- punk and eventually started mixing everything together. Through her life she was a Catholic, an Atheist, A Hari Krishna, A Buddhist and a reborn Christian. She survived a couple of overdoses and miscarriages. .She starred in over a dozen movies and did voice overs for both movies and commercials. Her shocking lifestyle, behaviour and looks made her an immediate icon, far more outrageous than Cher, Madonna, Lady Ga Ga Britney and Sinead O'Conner combined. Her 6 octave vocal range from extreme low for a woman to quite high.

Nina's fascination with Zarah Leander (a Swedish singer who had a big career in Germany in the 30ies and 40ies) is sort of both mockery and hommage at the same time. (sort of Ravel's "La Valse" is both mockery and hommage to Strauss) . Yes, Nina had deep rolling r's long before covering Rammstein and she used it wonderfully in some German dubbings (the witch in the classic anime "Chihiro"). But coming back to Zarah Leander: she proved that one can have success with a deeper voice at that time and her songs "Davon geht die Welt nicht unter" and "Ich weiß es wird einmal ein Wunder geschehen" remained classics - though basically they are connected to the genre "Durchhaltefilme" (meaning movies made to keep the Germans on the war track with offering hope for the time after) At that time those songs transcended the "Schlager" genre into more musical/cabaret stuff. And sort of the same is true for "Lili Marlene" by Lale Anderssen from that time with the line "An der Laterne, vor dem großen Tor" . Did I went off-topic? No, the "Laterne" is mentioned in "Seemann" - "Jetzt stehst Du da an der Laterne" >> the circle closes!

Re enuncation: Both Nina and Till are basically influenced by Bühnendeutsch, stage German, a standardized way of speaking German on the theater stage which was introduced ca. 1900. A few years ago a good friend of mine died in an accident with just 27 years. He had a lot of friends in my German hometown and at his funeral the whole church was singing this song (the rammstein version) as we knew it was his favorite band since ever. I was sitting there crying next to his smaller brother and sister and this is somehow the saddest memory I have of any song. And now I am here, 30 years old, 2 meters tall, fully tattooed, bearded, bald headed, crying alone on the couch again to this song. Thank you for bringing this unique peace of German art up so that more people can experience it and connect memories to it. Greetings from Norway.

It finally happened ! ! 😃😃😃 I adore Apocalyptica and have been hoping they'd make an appearance on this channel sooner or later. They began as a bit of a novelty act; covering Metallica songs on cellos. But then they started writing their own (mainly instrumental) stuff, brought in a drummer, added some effects pedals and became a heavy metal juggernaut in their own right. Their music swings between tear-inducing lightness and bone-crushing heaviness. Over the years, they've also added lyrics and have invited many guest vocalists appear on their albums, from Nina Hagen to Till Lindemann to Corey Taylor to Cristina Scabbia and many, many others. Most of the sound effects are done on a cello, with the aid of effects pedals. They're all virtuoso artists and seeing them live is an amazing experience. They blend classical music and metal at the fundamental level and it's a marriage made in heaven.

This song is really nice, but sits relatively late in Hagen's career and her voice doesn't have the range she used to. Instead of going high to her whistle tone she explores her lowest register. Though beautiful, definitely not her golden age. It would be awesome to have a reaction to "Nina Hagen - Naturträne (Rockpalast)", this is one of the songs that shows her unmatched range and versatility. I really love Nina and I think she is one of the greatest singers of all times. She is so charismatic also, really really good show woman. She has an extensive discography that goes through many many genres like punk, opera, rock, metal, country, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, dance pop and hindu-ish music. Being such an INCREDIBLE figure in music she deserves at least one more video reaction to her golden age. Please🙏🙏 , we all, her fans around the world, have been waiting for her to get the recognition she deserves by vocal coaches. Another highly recommended video of her is Nina Hagen - 1980 African Reggae (FR tv livish). Here she ads a lot of little quirky sounds and a kind of a yodel voice, and even uses operatic voice.

I first heard Apocalyptica covering Metallica and have been a fan since. Their version of Nothing Else Matters is haunting and just the idea of playing heavy metal on string instruments is amazing to hear and see. Then they started adding vocalists. My favorite song is "I Don't Care" with Adam Gontier from Three Days Grace. I came across this song and not even knowing German, I downloaded more of Nina Hagen's work.

finally, sth that i also suggested, next we need Liz to react to Ninas Live Performance of "Naturträne" Nina is one of those celebrities (at least here in germany) that you know basically forever but didnt really know for what until you actually dive into their career. the thing is with her, she was more or less chosen to be one of the stars of the DDR (East Germany) until she got into the Punk Scene of which she's the german Punk Queen since like the 70s/80s. after her wild image and music got "out of hand" for the east germany government, Nina was actually kicked out and moved to west germany BUT the most impressive thing bout her is her voice, in thi ls song she mainly has her low register but its specifically songs like "Naturträne" that show her full spectrum and i think you'd have a blast. All in all, Nina Hagen is a one of a kind type of person and in my opinion a national treasure for germany and btw, she's also quite famous for her outburst against Angela Merkel back in the 90s on TV xD

I remember my mother listening to Nina Hagan on vinyl when I was a young child in the 80s. The theatricality in the cover photography, the intensity of her leers and sneers, were a little bewildering to me. She was an avatar of punk artistry beyond my comprehension. Then as I moved through my teens into adulthood, and progressed through rap and metal and industrial, rediscovered new wave, and BAM! I saw this cover of Seeman like 30 frickin years after I first heard of Nina, and it was like a sledgehammer of awe to my face. Still dangerously intense and vibrant and amazing after so many years, Nina is astounding. I'm so glad to see this analysis of this song.

This has allways been my favorite version of any Rammstein song. I played chello as a kid and was allready a metalhead back then. When this album came out I was blown away by this song and this hasn't changed to this day. Like you said, this song feels really like a collaboration. A lot of times it's just Artist X feat. Artist Y and this really sounds like they figured out stuff together or Apocalyptica just knew she would nail it like this. And hearing Nina on an album of an international artist was also kinda mind blowing back then. Also my dad knew her back in the day (he was a music journalist during the 80s) and allways talked about how nice she was. Because of all these factors I would choose this song over any other actual Rammstein song as my favorite.

Elizabeth, falling out of her chair, speechless, weeping and replaying the video 4 times: Do you even understand how lucky you are to get to hear things like this? Heaven's angels are trying this out at choir practice, but they only wish they could sing like that. Now that i've heard this i will never be the same as i was before, and you just barely remembered hearing it a time or two?! I think everyone here said everything there is to say about Nina - she is an absolute icon and legend! Apocalyptica also deserve a shout out. They are a Finnish cello-metal band and have been around since the 90s. All three of them are classically trained and absolute masters of their trade. I think in the early 2000s their drummer joined them. They were first noticed for their Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos album but since then they've released another 8 albums - some songs with singers, lots of them without. I personally prefer the ones without vocals, because it shows what absolute masters of their trade they really are. There are plenty of KZbin videos out there, of them playing live. The studio sessions they recorded during lockdown were pretty cool. I love the songs Hope, Path (older tracks), En Route to Mayhem, Chokka .... urgh, I could go on. Their version of Hall of The Mountain King is also worth checking out!

Nina truly is a force of nature. She's taken a song from Rammstein and made it her own. Her voice and theatricality are insanely good. I've always considered her performance in this video and song as being one of a siren from legend, luring a sailor into the rocks to his doom. Her voice so pretty at one point enticing and then changing as he faces the reality of his situation. She's enormously talented with a range that anyone would give an arm and a leg for. Her orchestra backed performance of Somewhere over the Rainbow is an absolute delight to see and hear as well as songs like Natuträne . A joy for both eyes and ears although when she snarled "Mutter",she reminded me of my Welsh language teacher when she was warning me about parent's evening😂😅😂!! We didn't get along very well😉.

Nina has the real life balls that other artists only act like they have. Her early life and career is the stuff of legends. She made rock in the DDR that sounded like West German all while being labeled "Unehrenhaft (dishonorable)" since a very young age. She had to leave school in the tenth grade and still followed an open life in music and media as an open provacation in a land where they could kill you for less. Then fled the country not to hide, but to become a huge success and punk goddess as a huge middle finger to her homeland. Friggin' legend.

I love how much you love this, and your ability to put into words what I've felt about both versions of this song for years. It's one of the most beautiful compositions I've ever heard, featuring some of my favorite artists. The first time I heard it with Nina Hagen I'd never heard of her before, and I thought they'd just had some much older, far more weathered woman sing it because she had so much gravitas, and sounded so beautifully world weary, I was shocked when I saw her in the video. I love both this and the original version so much. I'd never heard Till Lindemann sing something so beautifully and sound so vulnerable before. I still get shivers.

Nina is a force of nature. She released a song recently (16 tons) with full lead vocal chest voice C2s and long sustained D2s. And in her career she even has a handful of notes in the 1st octave. One of, if not the lowest female singing voice on the planet and absolutely nothing C2 or above is vocal fry. Lowest chest note ever is an A1 on her new album (intro to song Venusfliegenfalle). Imagine. She can sing in chest a whole octave lower than this. She is actually a female bass. On the other end, she has whistle register up to B7, she sings distorted, opera, jazz, this, ... really underrated vocalist imo

I've been a fan of Apocalyptica since I was in high school (so, uhh. about 20 years now? Geez) And...yeah, every time I come across a new song, they do something new to a cello that produces some new bizarre and incredible sound. I have in the past described them as a band that exquisitely tortures cellos to make incredible music...though as a person whose relationship with music is entirely as a listener, I honestly have no idea what they do to make those incredible sounds. Whatever it is, it's definitely a wider range than what an orchestral cellist would normally do.
