Bobbie McMcmahon(west) was my mother and she passed in 2013. She told me many stories about my "uncle chuck" and this video. It's awesome to see other people from our family on here.

I reported aboard USCG AirSta Kodiak just before this rescue. I had the privilege of being LCDR Guth's Flight Mechanic for another rescue in Feb 1991. I was inexperienced and she knew it but, she was great leader and never made me feel incapable. (sadly, though we did CPR all the way to Homer, and delivered them to EMS, the subject did not survive). I'll tell you this for nothing: I really miss hanging out of the door of an HH-3f doing that stuff... My friend on the Storis was angry after this. Though they were in nearly as much danger as the FV, the only mention they got in the Kodiak Daily Mirror was "...the CGC Storis failed to get a towline to the vessel..."

Was there a reason they did not drop their anchor before drifting into shallow water ?
@judgedredd86577 жыл бұрын
probably could t pierce the ice
@aleutb0i4783 жыл бұрын
When we used to get that much ice up here In snp it was so thick and strong people could walk and possibly bring vehicles onto the ice packs, but I wouldn't know I'm a 07 child and I never got to see the ice packs but you were able to walk pretty far away from the island without falling in
@outboard20063 жыл бұрын
@@aleutb0i478 can clearly seethe ice is broken and an anchor would have no trouble penetrating, put this down to operator error
@Sherpah13 жыл бұрын
@@outboard2006 Brash ice, which is what you're looking at, can be anywhere from the size of a baseball to bigger than a semi. That ice has much more force behind it than regular ocean swells. They had already lost their rudder and one propp so could not make headway. If I remember correctly they had already lost their anchor, though even if it had been deployed it would have just been drug along the bottom. To blame it on "operator error" without having all of your facts straight is, well it is what it is. There's a reason that they made that show. Definitely one of those situations that you needed to be there to fully appreciate.

@@Sherpah1 if they had already lost their anchor then they had deployed it and my reply to the person saying that it would not penetrate was incorrect
