Thanks for trying to illustrate your point Ben. I get your point. But, then there is the problem of, can the coin in question then be called an AU- 58 or does it have to be called AU/MS details 'wiped'/ 'cleaned' coin? One designation carrys a lot more stigma or negativity (especially $ wise). Often we are really talking about a hairs breadth of difference that can be extrodinarily subjective. As an illustrative example- If I carried a mint state coin back in 1893 in my cotton trousers pants or jacket pocket home from picking it up at the bank, and then put it in my collectors cabinet drawer on a piece of felt where it periodically moved a 1/4 inch from opening and closing that drawer, now (5 yrs. later) I've got a 'cleaned' coin ? Alternatively, if the cardboard flip with the little plastic window, or even the non PVC plastic flip allows too much movement of the coin over a little bit of time, that may appear to be cleaning, or as the coins having been 'rubbed' or 'wiped' or worse, (especially if the coin was originally weakly struck) make it appear to be an AU coin. Know what I mean.

I returned a nice BU Hawaii Commemorative because it had the most subtle cleaning evidenced. It broke my heart. I was really needing it and the Spanish Trail to be within sight of the entire series, but I had to let it go.

A very good subject. More coins are ruined by cleaning than anything else. You could tell straight away these coins were cleaned, no lustre, just shiny. I even object to buying bullion grade coins that have been cleaned as well (the wear is not an issue).

It is sad to see so many beautiful coins that have been cleaned. A happy day for me would be to have one come back straight-graded. Not going to happen, though!

Mi buen viejo amigo de pueblo viejo. I think it is kind of responsibility for the dealer to identify a cleaned coin and state it on the holder In my case I still find hard to see the difference.

Hi Ben is a dipped coin considered a clean coin I've heard some people say it isn't and some say it is. And also what do you think is the best type of light bulb to use to look at coins

People who dip coins claim that they’re not cleaned; the rest of us, not so much. 🙄

Light- I read the pro graders use 75W old school incandescent as a single source of light and placed about 3 feet above the coin. I do this and view with a 7x Bausch & Lomb loupe. To me, this is how to really see the true state of a coin. However, it does lead to great frustration with the horrible lighting in coin shops and shows.

Any blast white coin 60-70 years old has been dipped imo. Honestly anything even 10 years old that hasn’t been dipped will still begin showing some original skin tones. But as for the question, no it’s not cleaned if done correctly. But if you are into blast white coins, you probably also love proofs. IMO all modern proofs and blast white business strikes are boring. I Dont really go for the June bug into a windshield “monster toners” either. At some point they just distract from the coins details. But nice original skin tone, double mint sets for example are what appeal to me the most. The question that always gets me is why the hell do ASE get graded? Now they’re even grading Rounds. No $ value or country backed rounds. Overpriced plastic coin holders as far as I’m concerned. Someone please create a third party company that simply provides quick extremely high quality, durable and customizable “slabs”. Something that is equally as beautiful as the coins. But that doesn’t add imaginary $ values to imaginary number grades to create imaginary professions. Whatever is hot and has demand, no doubt they will straight grade. If environmental damage pitted coins became all the rage, you would surely see more shipwreck effect slabs. lol. It’s a hobby not an investment.

Hi i agree with what you are saying , I definitely don't care for the modern coins. As far as dipping in my opinion that is a cleaned coin if you look up the definition of cleaned it says to remove dirt grime unwanted foreign materials so that's the reason they dip to get rid of something. If a coin is 100 years old why would you want it to look brand new? Makes no sense to me .thanks for the feedback

If the coin get rubbed in someone's pocket, I guess that good enough for PCGS and Ben to assumed the coin has been cleaned.
@zachschindel31812 күн бұрын
It’s all so stupid imo. Slight rub, unc details or au58. It’s the same damn thing. Without irrefutable evidence it’s all just speculation. Ffs, they clean coins… sorry “conserve”

To me these issues are too minor to make note of and are so common on many coins. Cabinet wear on raw coins as opposed to actual cleaning is possible on the higher points and feilds especially on wider fields will break the toning and many others factors and should be disnoted if you have overall eye appeal unless it considerable and appears to be obvious at first glance

How helpful is it to learn about coins by looking at them online? I know you can't learn as much as you can from a coin in your hand, but I just wondered if there was much benefit at all from looking at coins on websites like auction websites where you can look at many of the same type coins in one place.
@zachschindel31812 күн бұрын
Absolutely. I recommend great collections. Active auctions and realized sales in the archives. With the new photographer from pcgs, “ she quit because they wouldn’t update her equipment or replace sub-standard. Never liked pcgs clear robbery of charging for pictures that you never will actually own the rights to. Talk about a scam. Never accurately portray the coins most the time anyway. Now that she is with GC and told” give us a list of everything you need to take the best pictures for our Auctions and we will have it asap “. There photos are fantastic. Even having to go through the slab.
@zachschindel31812 күн бұрын
Just looking at coins through pictures is definitely helpful. Just can’t see how luster pools or moves across the devices. But still a valuable tool for learning. I would definitely make sure what you’re looking at is reputable. Basically not for sale on eBay. People are monsters. They will do anything for money.
