My father passed away with Alzheimer's disease. It was hard and I know exactly what you're going through. The only thing I can advise is to not scorn him when he can't remember something: "Nah it's not coming to you" because one of the last things they lose is the ability to know that they've lost. Just let whatever's left of him know that you understand and that he doesn't have to try so hard because you love him no matter what.

I appreciate that Suzi Hannah allowed an article about Jack and Alzheimer's and also this video. I think it will mean a lot to people beginning the same long journey. His whole family is left with so many memories of all the adventures they had, and that is comforting. He will always be in my memories as I always watched his shows and especially loved seeing him on David Letterman. They played off each other and gave me so many belly laughs that I so needed. God bless you, Hanna family and especially Jack!

You're not alone. My mother began "drifting away" years ago. As time goes by, the moments when she's "in" became precious. This breaks my heart because I took care of my Dad by myself for about 8 years and it was the best thing I ever did in my whole life even though it was also the hardest. I would have died for my Dad and when I got enough money together, I took him home with me and he healed a lot. I know we have cures for everything, I just know it. But right now, things being how they are and watching this video, this brings back so many memories. I am glad my Dad is in a better place. The best thing we can hope for and pray for is a good passing and with Jack being at home, with a loving wife who obviously cares for him and being able to be in Nature, is the best thing ever. I will pray for you both. God bless Jack, he is a beautiful man and brought us all so much joy and we always laughed and had fun when he would come on with his animals. God protect and bless him, bless you, Suzi, for taking this journey with him, hard as it is, it's the best thing you will ever do. God bless you both.

It's definitely easier when you have money and no worries and you can afford the best care. My husband also is suffering from moderate dementia. I have him in an adult center a few days a week being paid for by private aging services. I've had some things happen. I know one thing. They will always deny. My husband was physically assaulted by another member and he forgot. Two weeks after it happened he told me. They tried to get rid of me when I brought it up. They downplayed it. I actually know the family of the person very well so I went to them privately and they told me what happened. I've also encountered eye rolling, just a bad vibe if I'm telling one of the staff about something my husband was dealing with. Going to have to speak to his case manager about it, but at this point not hopeful. I don't trust anybody anymore.

@JustMe-uu3bh Can I just say that I know what it takes to do what you did? And I'm very proud of you for your commitment to your family. I took care of my mother-in-law and grandfather-in-law for 2.5 years when I was 18 & newly married. I also took care of my grandma for 2.5 years until she died, so she could be at home on the farm she loved so dearly. My 4 little boys, aged 5-10, helped me & often brought a smile to her face. I've worked in nursing homes, assisted living apartments, and rehab places. No matter how good they might be, they can't provide the kind of care that family can at home. And they don't provide the love that family does. And loved ones are mistreated in some cases, and at the very least neglected in other. No matter how well they do, they just don't have enough manpower to give them the same standard of care. We can rest assured that we are blessed when we take care of family. It's hard, especially the letting go. But God blesses us in ways we can't even imagine. Well done! ❤ ❤ ❤

He was in his fifties and lived a long time. She told me as her father regressed, he forgot how to eat. He couldn't swallow. He didn't know how. Alzheimer's got a hold of my mom and she eventually passed. Before Alzheimer's, she was the sharpest woman I had ever known (not just saying that cause she was my mom). She had a great life with her husband and traveled a lot. She was very empathetic towards everyone and could look at a person and instantly connect with how they felt and understand why they felt that way. While visiting her during her last few months, she would sit in a chair and twiddle her fingers and thumbs in her own little world. I used to sit there and wonder if she even knew who I was cause it seemed like there was very little acknowledgement b/c of the Alzheimer's. But every time I gave her a hug at the end of each visit, she would grab my hand and squeeze really hard and that was all the confirmation I needed. Truly hope a cure for this will reveal itself someday.
