Great show - just being a nerd here. Tabula Rasa was a phrase coined by 17th-century philosopher John Locke. Just so happens, that LOST created a character named John Locke and that episode was about him and his 'clean slate' on the island. Happy commandzone-ing.
@__malte8 жыл бұрын
*more nerdy stuff incoming* Well to be exact it was a term first used (as far as we know) by Aristoteles, however later it became an almost common term in certain scientific fields, such as psychology. So while the term was popularized around the time Locke lived it was first used approximately two-thousand years earlier.

I play blue with enchantments that control instead of instant or sorceries that control because instant and sorceries (at least to me) feel like one shots that arent abusable and reusable, but enchantments can be used various times.

One of my favorite blue spells is Time Stop, just end the turn. Works in combat, exiles spells and abilities on the stack, gets rid of stuff that can't be countered, it can go on Elite Arcanist, you can stop someone's turn before their draw step, it's awesome.

I feel the need to point out, red and blue wheel of fortune/windfall effects are not the same. Pretty much all of the blue ones recycle your hand (and often your graveyard) into your library whereas the red ones make you discard your hand. Because blue is more resourceful and exchanges their hand, red essentially throws it away for a new one. I think that makes sense.

@pariahdox79638 жыл бұрын
My first deck was a bunch of Phantasmal creatures mixed with artifacts(wurmcoil was in my deck since day 1) and it was blue. that was my deck for so long, blue is natural to me. I like green more since it feels less like I'm running the hamster wheel but still has a bunch of synergies.

Could you guys do a series on more advanced EDH rules and interactions?
@Kestral2878 жыл бұрын
Most of that is just general rules knowledge that only ever comes up in EDH because we run weird cards. The only really EDH-specific rule that screws with people is that putting a commander from the board to the command zone when it's destroyed is a replacement effect, so it never dies. ... Well, that and Mimic Vat versus commanders. That one is fun.

I only play mono blue in commander. Usually I play Tefferi, Temporal Archmage. When I play that deck I never get out ramped by green decks. The green decks might have faster burst ramp at the start, but I always pass them up in mana by turn four or five. Also I love mystic confluence, but in mono blue I would take cryptic command every time. An interesting thing i have realized is in the same way ramp and card draw are the most important things in commander, denying those things to your opponents is often just as important/Powerful. I have seen so many green decks throw up there hand full of lands on the board and then they play one card that is supposed to draw them cards and when you counter it they are crippled for the rest of the game. in that same way I can also deny my opponents mana with stasis, winter orb, back to basics ect... I feel like my deck has the best of everything. I have access to the best card draw in the game. i can out ramp most green decks(I'm sure a competitive mono green or U/G deck might be able to out ramp me with the right cards) I have access to mana doublers like extraplanar lens as well as cards like high tide. I usually have the best creatures too. I have a handful of the games most powerful clone effects plus bribery and vedalken shackles. not to mention blue has access to wurmcoil and the eldarazi titans the same as any color. and then i also pretty much have access to the best control. the only things i with i could add from another color for my control package might be all the white spot removal(however rapid and pongify are surprisingly good in this category) and sweepers like terminus and supreme verdict. that being said i have learned to value instant speed "sweepers" and bounce much more highly than sorcery speed ones. when you have sorcery speed removal you have to asume people will attack you and preemptively wrath the entire board. with a cards like evacuation, cyclonic rift, aetherize ect... i can just wait until someone attacks me and then sweep the board so in the mean time my opponents are taking more damage. and i also have access to Karn, Ugin, All is dust, and nev's disk. even though black and white might have better lower costed removal than those. i have found those cards to be sufficient for all my wrathing and removal needs that i don't get in blue. One of the most powerful political strategies for blue is to develop the reputation of "if you attack me i will make sure you loose" . Even if focusing a player may cause you to lose it can help you in the long run so for example someone attacks you and you say "are sure you want to do that? If you do i will make sure you never resolve another spell again. you might be able to defeat me, but i can do so much damage to you there will be no way for you to recover." also running a butch of "aetherize" type effects makes people really paranoid about attacking you. after doing this sort of thing for a while people dont screw with you anymore.(or be your friend) One thing you didnt mention was that blue is also the combo color. Combos are often very important in edh and blue is usualy the best color at pulling combos off as well as preventing them from happening. Also even though im a cutthroat edh player, im always very kind in my non game related interaction with people. Not being a dick and being gracious when you win goes a long way in keeping the people you utterly destroy every game coming back for more :P Sorry I ranted, but this video got me thinking about all things blue!

no prob guys. love the preview card too thats a perfect edh card. also you guys hit a ton of really good points about blue in commander, certainly the most powerful color in magic. most powerful card in magic overall... dare i say, Island?
@WarsWorth8 жыл бұрын
In competitive EDH, Black is actually considered the most powerful color. Tutors are powerful. That and Ad Nauseum, Necropotence, (and maybe even Doomsday) are easily in the top 5 or 10 most powerful cards of EDH.
@WarsWorth8 жыл бұрын
Blue is definitely a very close second though.
@WarsWorth8 жыл бұрын
Then you built a bad deck? What do you mean if you don't have a card necessary to tutor for? Your deck should be filled with good cards to tutor for. Every tutor in your deck turns your one-ofs into X-ofs (where X is 1 + the # of tutors in your deck.) They give you what you need when you need it, whether it's a combo piece, a hate card, removal, etc. It gets you what you need when you need it. That's the most important thing in EDH, a format that is heavily random because it's 100 card singleton. Anything that can change the fact that EDH is 100 card singleton is extremely strong.

curious how you think blue can ramp. I can't think of a single blue card that does anything remotely close to ramping. it is hands-down the worst color at ramping, even more so than white, which has tithe, land tax, gift of estates, knight of the white orchid, and kor cartographer. the first few of those are mana fixing, but still way better than literally any blue card at ramping. Also, blue has numerous exile effects including Reality Shift which you mentioned, Curse of the Swine, Phyrexian Ingester, and any number of counter spells. There are probably others I can't think of. "In a vacuum Mystic Confluence is just more powerful" at 1:05:35 is one of the silliest things I've ever heard. MC and Cryptic do not compare, and 99% of the time Cryptic is indisputably better. An un-caveated counter is not comparable to a counterspell that allows them to pay taxes in the format where people have the most mana of any format ever. Especially if you're countering their wincon late game when they should have tons of mana available. Also the ability to bounce a permanent vs a creature is infinitely better, and tapping all of your opponents' creatures, not just target opponent, is game-saving.
