What a joke, like Eminem fans vote. So risky! Seriously, the music is bad.
@alvinoszavlis69147 жыл бұрын
I dont think it's a matter of quality music. Eminem has put out worst albums than this and it didn't stop him from selling over 600,000 first week. I think the trump cypher divided his American fans and that's why he had such a low first week sales. Internationally, as Justin said, this was not an issue since we don't really care about Trump in the extend of not buying or streaming Em's album. I personally didnt think this was his worst project but not one of his best either. It sits somewhere in the middle of his catalogue for me. Sonically its all over the place and there are 3-4 too much songs in the project(remind me, heat, tragic endings or need me). Plus we live in an era where people love to follow the trends and what is hot at the moment. And like it or not, for the last year hating on eminem has been a huge trend. People hate on him for all sorts of reasons, some of them are justified and some not. Also I think if he released different singles to promote his album he would've had much better sales.
@AQGOAT247 жыл бұрын
What albums has Em made that is worse than this? A strong disagree there. Easily his worst imo. Plus Eminem always made political tracks. White America and Mosh are easily songs to alienate white america. Hell as a kid I would argue White America was my first exposure to a white person discussing what we now call white privilege.
@Michaelgabriel957 жыл бұрын
AQGOAT24 encore was bad
@alvinoszavlis69147 жыл бұрын
AQGOAT24 in my opinion relapse is worse than this one. And I agree that he always made political statements, i never said the opposite. But this time it feels different. Back then with White America and Mosh he was the top artist in the world talking about politics and all sort of controversial things and getting away with it since this was part of his slim shady persona. And he was the most important, hot and relevant artist at the time. The low sales are not because of the quality of the music. Its because he dissed trump, divided his fanbase and gave his haters more reasons to hate with a mediocre album while he is not as relevant as he was 5 years ago.

Relapse, to me, was under appreciated. I think because of the accents, people really ripped on the album and it got to Em more than he’ll ever admit. I honestly think Eminem’s only problem with Relapse is that people didn’t like it. I think that was definitely the album he wanted to make and he was definitely pleased with it, but when other people didn’t like it, he had to do something else, which is where Recovery came from. In my opinion, Recovery does have a few solid tracks, but most of them were obvious attempts to reach a mainstream audience since, for the first time in a long time, Em no longer had that. That’s where the stupid Rihanna & P!nk tracks came from. MMLP2 followed the same path, but improved a little bit. A few solid tracks, but once again, just desperate attempts to reach a mainstream audience. But, Revival was the worst of these. I’ve listened to Revival four times now, and can only find three tracks I really like, the rest are poppy garbage. Eminem, if on the off chance you ever come across this comment, please understand that we do not need that youthful rage you displayed on your first three albums. And if you truly dislike Relapse for more than just accents, we don’t necessarily need that, either. What we do need, though, is passion. Hunger. Not hunger for mainstream success. Hunger for respect. Because, yes, lyrically, you are one of the most respected MC’s in the game right now, you have earned your respect. But, respect can be lost and if you keep down this path, it will be. Get rid of your yes men. You are surrounded by musical geniuses. Dre, Royce, Rubin, etc.. You created three of the greatest albums of all time. You have no excuse to release such terrible music. However, if the decline is truly because of his alienation of Trump supporters, then good. That would be the first instance of artistic integrity I’ve seen come out of Em since 2009, and good on him for drawing that line in the sand. Such a shame about the quality of the album, though. IF he releases another project, I really hope it’s better than his last three...
@TheCompanyMan7 жыл бұрын
Awesome comment, Amityville. Thank you! I definitely agree about the passion. He talked about that in the vulture interview. How 8 Mile soundtrack and Lose Yourself he was so locked into the Rabbit character that passion spilled. Would love to see that again.

amityville I totally agree with relapse being underrated. He basically created a series of vignettes (many horror) that were well produced, pushed the envelope and showed his technical genius. 3 a.m. is dark but amazing but so were some of DMX's classics. Never understood why it wasn't better recieved. Recovery felt like a lousy apology letter to his pop fanbase for making an actual hip hop album.

Additionally, I think people don't realize that real hip hop fans still check for Eminem. Probably more so than his pop fans. So when he comes out with zany singles or singles with pop acts, they(we) are disappointed. Especially when he has signed acts like Westside Gunn, Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse. It's past time he makes some real rap and not the crap that sold albums 15 years ago. To paraphase the great Phonte: Dope beats, dope rhymes, that's all we want.

I could do without the first 3 songs on the record, but as a fan of Em as a human being, watching him mature with songs like "Bad Husband", "Castle", "Arose", and how those last two songs we're put together in such a genius fuckin way I'm just proud of him. Some of his hooks are lackluster and it feels like he could have chosen better songs, but those highlights are exactly what I've been waiting to hear from him.

Mew [Jacob] I don’t feel like that.

As someone who would rather have Trump in office than Bernie/Hillary I don't agree with like anything he says, I think it would be ignorant to completely ignore how racist some of his supporters can be, but his older political music sounds GENUINE, it doesn't sound like he was jumping on a bandwagon or a movement that was popular at the time. I agree with what most of Trump's policies are doing but I think he needs to get the FUCK OFF TWITTER. Anyways this isn't about politics, it's about Eminem and although I respect where he's coming from you don't change someones opinion by saying "UR EITHER WITH ME OR AGAINST ME XDDD" like cmon Eminem, you're arguabley the GOAT and a fucking amazing lyricist. You can have a dialogue about how Trump is a bad president without "drawing a line in the sand".
@Nomarandus7 жыл бұрын
Mew [Jacob] I can't say that cuz Eminem has pretty much always been the only mainstream rapper to go at politicians (Mosh, We Are Americans, This Rap Game, ....) and people forget even before the BET cipher he dissed Trump on No Favors so no bandwagon
@_mew7 жыл бұрын
Orlando Small but that was also released during the election and just shows how he doesn't like Trump then, still was a bandwagon at the start of the election
@FormerRuling7 жыл бұрын
"As someone who would rather have Trump in office than..." THAT's why you feel like you do about his political songs, not anything to do with any change in how he approaches politics in his music. You are just in a personally different place now in regard to politics, so from your perspective his political songs hit you differently. Eminem cracked at Bush right in the height of anti-Bush sentiment, SNL was doing weekly sketches calling him an idiot, and support for the Iraq war had waned greatly and not a single fan said Eminem was 'riding the Bush-is-an-idiot bandwagon", because his base generally agreed with the message.

Great analysis. Though I have to say, the sales for Revival aren’t mostly due to his stance on America. I simply think it’s also most people listened to the album online and were disappointed. No need to buy it. It’s just not a good album regardless of some it’s messages

I always wondered why Tiger Woods hype cooled off even before his marriage scandal. A lot contributed to the low Em numbers. Unfortunately the initial Em single did not generate a lot of excitement, he didn't have the elite features fans were hoping for, a section of fan were alienated and the type of production seemed out of touch and not as timeless sounding as 4:44. He is a GOAT, but even they can create a project that doesn't hit. Shouldnt stop him from creating, keep painting. Quincy Jones produced thriller at like 50.

As well as alienating his core fans, it's important to note that Eminem has also alienated the hip hop community at large with his choice of beats and his choppy flow. As a hip hop fan, Revival just isn't pleasing to listen to sonically, and it actually sounds badly mixed in places. Why would you alienate your core white fanbase and then make a bunch of songs inspired by rock music?

This album was very different from the earlier ones. Big props to Eminem for experimenting with new styles, like trap and triplet flows etc. Many artists don't experiment that late in their careers. The fact that he has the balls to disown much of his fanbase really does show how untouchable (pun intended) he really is. He's rich as fuck, remember that. He doesn't need to sell albums, he's set for life. It impresses me that he throws shit at the people he dislike. He uses his platform to speak up, because he has a voice that allows him to. Even if half his audience leaves him, he doesn't care, because he does what he believes is the right thing to do. Respect to Em. Also, great analysis on this Justin. I always enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work.

Intresting comparison, certainly something I wouldn't have seen coming but I liked it. And thank you for reiterating what i've been saying ever since Revival came out. Eminem didn't HAVE to do this political based album, but he did as he knows the power he's got and he's making use of it. Great idea for why his sales went down as well, I never thought he'd shift 700K in this streaming era, but i still expected at least almost 500K. Welcome back Hunte!!! But to comment on the video, we’re ready for Em to grow up, but are his core fans? Last year was about the “Grow Up” as opposed of the Glow Up. With albums like 4:44, it was all about maturity. When Em exhibits it, are his fans going to accept it? Most of his fans still expect him to talk about killing his mother and pill popping. Why can’t they accept growth? (I don’t have the answers)........your Tiger Woods segment..........speechless. Excellent fucking video. Welcome back.
@glaflorb7 жыл бұрын
Really interesting take on the album as always. Personally, I can’t help but take the increasingly “pop” nature of his albums as something of a sellout, but I admire him sticking to his guns on the political side. The problem is that while he says he wants “the division” in the US to stop, he’s created an album that literally tells disagreeing fans to stop listening. Whether one agrees or not with the sentiment, isn’t “I’m drawing a line in the sand” literally dividing the two sides? It’s not like The Eminem Show and any of its very political tracks were looking to bridge a political gap, but the music was good enough that Bush-supporting fans still listened and Em was able to engage with that broad, Tiger Woods-like audience. This album, in contrast, has bewildering features (Ed Sheeran?), misguided attempts to engage socially (“untouchable”), and truly cringeworthy lines (booty heavy duty, diarrhea... ugh), so whether his goal was searing political indictment or timely and thoughtful rumination, I think it’s just safe to say he failed. For the record, Eminem is great and I would’ve loved to see this album as his comeback, especially one which took the president to task, but Revival is just mediocre.
@soniccatalogrecordings17187 жыл бұрын
Well said. I knew I wasn't the only one who felt the dissonance of the project as presented. Thing is, I feel if the better songs were premiered first, it may have had a marginally better after taste, but I don't think we'll ever know as that's not the way it happened.

Respect for this video. It's funny because his verse on Dre's Compton LP he compared himself to Tiger and gave what I believe is his last great verse because of how far in he went. I love him standing up for BLM on Untouchable and thought that was so needed in this day and age. His Trump disses are great but the problem with Revival is just how much it is disorganized and all over the place. The same rhyme a million words then get a pop star to kill it formula never really worked out for him but he used that formula to death on this album. Offended I thought could have been 100 times better had he sampled a line from O.C.'s Time's up (Fuck Who Did I Offend) and just go all out in a convincing way smashing the Trump administration. He needs the Bass Brothers and Dre back to help him structure his songs more because he was rambling and doing way too much. Then some lines were just cringeworthy punchlines. I still love Em and I truly respect him using his platform, but this album just didn't cut the mustard.

In tiger woods defense he NEVER identified with the black community nor saw himself as black so his comments actually never surprised me. Black people just wanted to be apart of something great that looked like them. And no one should have expected black support during his downfall either. Him not rebounding had nothing to do with the lack of blackness he never claimed to have.

I don't think that's true. The majority of people worldwide didn't like how the music SOUNDED, and that's the problem imo, not the message itself.

The album isn't that bad though, it will grow on people...and yes, he really says some shit on there...but that's par for the course, no pun...sometimes, I think he can be oddly underappreciated
@Dizzinator21147 жыл бұрын
Cory Lyons Music he is underappreciated. That's why he keeps saying that. Rappers and his fans will say he is great, but there are a lot of people who will give Eminem back handed compliments where they say he is a great, but he not better than a lot of rappers while not naming 10 who better and if they give you 1 it's someone like black thought... Or tech n9ne.

Interesting points and well put together as always, great to have you back Justin Hunte... I loved MMLP2 for the return to form that it was, it was thrilling to have Eminem rapping like that again having regained the ability to just let it loose in his old voice. So the direction and sound of this album definitely let me down a bit, it was just unexpectedly tunnel-visioned and bogged down in politics (even though I agree with him as far as Trump and respect the fact it was so important for him to express himself on the subject). That being said, Eminem is one of the few that I'll allow whatever clunkers because they've delivered so much for so long before, and hopefully he'll go back to where he was with MMLP2 on the next album.

Em took a risk. God bless his soul. I knew a good number of his base wouldn't want to square dance to the white guilt. The album was also poorly executed. Rick Rubin is a better producer than beat maker.

Jglg g I'm not saying he doesnt have these views, but why impeach Trump? If we do that, then we get Pence, who is even worse. Besides, impeaching Trump wont get rid of Jeff Sessions. Eminem may not be doing this for publicity, but he sure doesnt know what he is talking about.

martypython I guess, but his Bush criticisms held way more weight to them than the ones against Trump. Idk about you, but Bush is way worse than Trump imo. I dont like Trump, but it could be worse. We wouldnt have to worry about Trump if we just limited the power of the executive branch. After we fix the legislative branch that is.

If the decline in his sales is related to his alienation of his trump supporters then good. He put the line in the sand. He knew what he was doing. He has to know that a huge portion of his fans are trump supporters. He put his foot down, made the line in the sand and now his actual fans are the only ones buying his shit. He has enough money, he doesn't need 1.7m first week sales. If he did need it the album would have been rap pop fun jams where he slashes into popular culture. Everyone can get behind making fun of people like Pamela Anderson, but for some people, their politics is too far. It's the same ppl saying NFL players should stand up for the anthem because they're just pawns for white peoples entertainment. It's rediculous.
@krazyglue17 жыл бұрын
Basically, what I'm saying is that em doesn't need racists' money. And let's be honest, here. If, at this point, you're still behind trump it's because you're either an idiot, a racist or both.

I liked a lot of the messages in Revival but the beats and the immature punchlines killed it for me. This is coming from a guy that thought MMLP2 was good, Recovery was decent, and Relapse had a good concept but the accents killed it. If I ranked all his albums it would go MMLP SSLP Eminem Show MMLP2 Recovery Relapse Revival Encore (drugged out trash)

Great piece Justin. I've never envision Em being similar to Tiger Woods in that scenario. Don't get me wrong I do believe that Revival was an "above average" album not because of the lyrical content or the message behind it. I felt that it was the overall package that was presented with the lyrics that brought the album down. The production and mixing was all over the place, the unusual hooks along with a couple of guest appearances that seemed odd and, yes, a few corny punchlines that didn't seem to land. If the project was a bit more focus by stripping it back down to the basic that suites his style and focus on the hard hitting venom in his lyrics I do believe that it would have been receive slightly better. However, we cannot ignore that the industry has drastically changed over time with the way we consume music and how we obtain. Sure record sales were low but so is everyone else's. We stream albums more than we purchase them thanks to spotify and Pandora. The landscape of hip hop has also shifted away from the lyrical to just the vibe of the song without the substance and the mood rather than the message. Even the age of those consuming has shifted. Sure the base fan will remain but overall with the current influx of fans being young with the "mumble" rap and more and more causal fans they will not connect properly. I do agree that some of the backlash did come from what you presented but the other variables that I presented did also play a factor in the decline of the album. Furthermore, it will be a matter of time to see if this will affect the legacy but I do connect stronger with "Walk on Water" with what he presented cause that's exactly what is happening. He is getting clowned on for what he feels and preaches. Who are we to judge that especially in the climate in our society that we are living in? He will still be in GOAT talks regardless of this album cause many of the artists that we put in those talks do have average albums from time to time but are still praised as best. I do believe that this may, hopefully, light a fire underneath him to come back better and that people need to step back from the ledge from all the negativity and try to respect and appreciate what we still have.

Right now, its cool to hate Eminem. People will lighten up in the album in a couple of years, just like Encore and Relapse. The “lets hate eminem” bandwagon” is really popular thing right now. I think everyone who “hated” the album went into the album wanting to hate it, ir simply skimmed through it. Mark my works

The comparison you made in this video is very apt.It takes a lot of guts for a white man to stand up and say this.I respect him for what he did.Him putting out untouchable as a single ahead of songs like River and Believe showed that he wants to make a statement,not earn spots in the charts.MAYBE this was the reason he put the pop features,to grab more attention from a wider audience. Also,I personally love the album,and don't mind the pop features as long as they are hooks(need me ahem).Keep putting out great content man!
