Good review. My P-22 is 3 years old and the CA version. The OEM spring has been replaced on day one. The first 200 rounds shot through this weapon had no issues (Federal). For concealed carry, you need to have the first 10 rounds cycle flawlessly. You also need to test for EDC by going to the range and shooting 10 rounds from a cold gun (as it would be in a shooting situation). After the first 10 rounds the weapon is warm and all rounds after the 1st ten are not as critical as the first 10. I have already tried switching out the extractor and put the OEM extractor back in. So at more than 500 rounds here is my take. AGUILA 38 grain cycles perfectly in the first 10 , the second magazine and even the third reload. Federal "Punch" tried in a cold weapon did not cycle in the 1st ten rounds, FTE on the second magazine. CCI Mini Mags appeared to work similar to the Aguila. CCI Stingers appeared acceptable in the same test. Winchester range box was simply awful. The same Federal (range blue box) does not cycle as the Aguila or CCI. This non scientific test leads me to shoot Aguila 38 grain at the range and load the EDC magazines the same. Shoot at the range what you will carry.

I also have the CA version and had issues with failure to eject so I replaced the guide rod spring, polish the feed ramp, hammer and chamber lightly. Now it runs perfectly.

Where does this idea come from that a good carry gun has to cycle 10 rounds perfectly? The average self-defense shooting as reported by the NRA involves two rounds being fired.

Personally I wouldn't dry fire a 22 rimfire without having the hammer block safety on. That way it won't damage the firing pin or the barrel. Just a tip.

Walther improved this pistol a lot over the years. My buddy has a gen 1 that still works great but it does have more cycling issues. I got the current generation last time it was on Black Friday sale. I have way over 1000 rounds through it and didn’t have any major issues. To me this is a range toy as the ammo is much more affordable and therefore I can afford shooting more. I don’t really understand why anyone would consider a rimfire pistol for concealed carry. But that’s none of my business.

Have an early P22 that broke the main spring only shooting a very few times. It was sent back to the factory for repair. Getting it back, it worked flawlessly. I then ordered a captured recoil spring and since installing, it shoots and ejects anything I put through it including the cheapest bulk. I typically only use the more expensive ammo such as Stingers, but so nice to be able to shoot anything made. I have yet (knock on wood) had a misfire or failure to eject through a thousand rounds since the repair…feeling pretty lucky!

I have one of these. I have had an issue with it where the double action stopped working (the hammer would fail to drop the whole way down, though single action remained functional). I sent it back to Walther and they fixed it under warranty, so that is good, though I have read that this is actually a fairly common problem with the P22. I can't really say it is my favorite, though. Part of it is that I'm not really a fan of DA/SA autos (the P22 is the only DA/SA I own). Part of it is that, like many 22's with fixed barrels, reassembly is a pain. And it really prefers hotter .22LR ammo, which is not a problem per se, but it does mean having to keep Mini-Mags around as range ammo for it. I also don't own a lot of .22LR's, mostly because I find them underwhelming to shoot. However, the P22 is a fantastic option for certain use cases. My wife tends to be recoil sensitive, but she can shoot the P22 like a laser. I also like taking it out with new shooters as the light weight, light single action, and negligible recoil make it very easy to train on (and looks very similar to a "traditional" handgun like one of my Glocks as opposed to a target-style pistol like my Buckmark. Feeling included like this is an important part of the fun).

I have the 2008 model P22 - with the original 2 pc guide rod and spring. lots of FTF, FTE malfunctions with cci 40gr. changed to the captured guide rod and spring, and upgraded ejector and I still have the same FTF issue with almost any .22 ammo I use. I love the gun, hate the fact that I can not rely on using it without repeated malfunctions, I'm thinking the back of the slide is dragging on the hammer obstructing the recoil, but I'm afraid to grind down the internal top of the hammer to attempt to remedy the issue. I do not use this as my ccw, I have a G43 for that. I just wish this was more reliable to enjoy at the range.

I just went to the range to try the Walther P22CA I got a few weeks ago. I cleaned and oiled it before going. I was kind of wary of the issues with it not loading or not liking certain cartridges that are high velocity or below 1300fps. I was wrong... initially...It fired like a dream using Remington Thunderbolt 40g (green box - $42.99/500rnds) with 1255fps. Then I tried the Federal 40g (blue box - $74.99/800rnds) with 1200fps, and it also took that and no misfires or jamming. Next was the CCI Minimag 40g ($54/500rnds) with 1235fps and every round also went through with no problem. But after firing 180 rounds switching through those 3 cartridges, the problem started but it was just with the Federal. The gun started not going into battery and I had several FTLs and misfires with that particular cartridge. I actually thought I had a squib a few times. The CCI and the Thunderbolt still shot great, still had no issues. I dont know if it was because the gun started getting dirty, but why just the Federal and why after firing great initially, I wondered. I just bought an Aguila 38g ($41.99/500rnds) with 1280fps cartridges that I will try next. In the meantime, I guess I will feed the Federal to my Savage 64 and Citadel Trakr.

I have two 1st generation P-22s. A short barrel and long barrel. The long barrel is still new in the box. The short barrel I put many rounds through it. Remington Golden .22s work well. CCI stingers too. The slide on the short barrel was defective from day one. The slide grooves became chewed a bit and the safety became so loose the safety would drop while firing. Sent it back to S&W and got it back later with no repairs and a note that read "Normal wear". I was upset naturally but instead of complaining and sending it back again I decided not buy from Walther again. In fact I haven't purchased firearms for some years now because I have enough. I want to purchase a new slide for the P-22 but first I want to find out if new slides fit old P-22s. I've asked around but nobody so far has an answer.

Unlike many, I consider it worthless. I bought the P22Q without researching it, but rather based on the reputation of Walther weapons over the decades. Mine refuses to function reliably with Punch 22LR. Which is my required ammo for any 22LR used for self-defense. My other major problem with it is that it cannot be milled to use an optic sight. I see that there is one rear sight replacement for adding a Vortex optic. Apparently a Holosun can’t be used, which would be my strong preference. Bottom line is I would not buy this gun again. I would strongly advise any family member from buying it unless it was a bargain basement price (like under $100).
