Thank you. Been out of civilian flight sims for a while. Love the newer glass cockpits. Trying to learn to do things more or less correctly. Tricky to do when FS doesn't give you all the right tools like charts, and in VR I can't look over at my laptop. Also tricky finding actual instructional videos. And of course they don't teach things in the correct order.
@thecorporatepilotdad3 жыл бұрын
Navigraph has a chart service that uses Jepps. The CJ4 WTM has charts on the MFD but I do believe navigraph is required for them to work. That is one option for getting charts in VR.
@icecold95113 жыл бұрын
@@thecorporatepilotdad Currently VFR for VR is what I use. Not bad, even provides taxi chart for most airports. What it doesn't provide is full details for airports like navair.com, not sure if I typed that accurately. But much of that is over my head anyway, as yet. But trying to move on from just being in the air to doing basics the correct way. Entering holding patterns correctly and that sort, then instrument landing. Learning in the correct order is the trick, and getting things out of order probably discourages a lot of people. Probably never fly for real, as that's just to expensive. @thecorporatepilotdad2 жыл бұрын
New waypoints can be added on approaches when they are developed. DANDY is also a fix on the ILS runway 6 at TEB. ILS approaches are great, but RNAV approaches are everywhere and becoming more commonly used in some places over an ILS. If the airplane can do LPV approaches (lower minimums for aircraft equipped with WAAS) lower minimums equal to an ILS can be used (usually 200 feet AGL). Glad you liked the video. @thecorporatepilotdad2 жыл бұрын
The PL21 is different that the G1000 but the concept is the same. I have videos on VNAV and ILS approaches in the CJ4. Select APPR and VNAV for RNAV approaches in the CJ4. There is a CJ4 play list with lots of videos that might answer your questions on RNAV approaches. I’m not sure where I find the time either. I’ve slowed down on videos to spend as much time as possible with my kids before all of them are in school. Video frequency will increase in the fall of this year.

Thanks so much I will check out your suggestions. I think I had selected NAV not APPR in the CJ4. What are settings in VNAV to fly a particular flight plan from takeoff to the approach point so that cruse elevation remains synchronized to the GPS points along the route and the proper flight level at each including the transition to landing. Much thanks!!
@dbernstein79012 жыл бұрын
The explanation and video is so very nice. I think I was combining a flight route between the departure field and a distant waypoint. Following that arrival then switching to an RNAV just outside the IFA using a published RNAV arrival. With this configuration I would expect the results given in your video with AP- APPR both activated. Thanks so much again!

Exemplary clarity - thank you. Much harder, and true sign of intelligent quality, brevity. Now I'll go on and not be brief :-) I do appreciate the time and effort put in to this, and the knowledge shared. I've been avoiding RNAV because it was clear as mud what worked and what didn't on msfs and now I'm happy to give it a go. ILS works intuitively and well. One thing that I think I got was when to press the Approach button - looks like as soon as you pass the X on the approach plate. Any other clues as to when to hit APP? Seems the magenta dot is there from a long way off. Can you press too early? And if it is GPS and doing Vertical Nav, why do you still have to define the heights manually as on the approach chart? Surely that would be in the GPS flight plan too? Thanks - Liked and subscribed.
@thecorporatepilotdad3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing. Pressing APPR does the same as pressing NAV expect it does one more thing.. holds altitude until the GS or GP centers and it will follow it and ignore the altitude alerter. The GP doesn't work correctly until hitting the FAF on an RNAV approach in the default aircraft. VNAV doesn't do a lot with the default aircraft. I think the 787 has some VNAV functionality. If you want working VNAV get the CJ4 Working Title Mod. It's free but the FMS works almost 100% in terms of functionality and that includes VNAV. It will even compute takeoff and landing distance and Vspeeds and allows flap selections, anti ice on or off, and wet runway performance.
@thecorporatepilotdad3 жыл бұрын
In real life and on ILS approaches press APPR when ATC says cleared for the approach. Otherwise you're not cleared to descend below the last assigned altitude and pressing APPR will follow the GS. If not using ATC it can be pressed whenever you like. It will just hold your selected altitude until it sees the GS.

I have a few questions if you don't mind. In real life, would someone fly in these conditions with a GA aircraft? I understand that if you fly IFR it's because you may expect low visibility, but would someone fly and land in these conditions on purpose? In real life again, when there is a mandatory altitude to cross a way point (seen with a line bellow and over the altitude), is there a certain play or you have to be at that exact altitude? In your video you have to descend 500' between JUGGY and DANDY, is there a quick way to calculate the rate of descent needed or do pilots just eyeball it? At STICC where you intercepted the glidepath, it's 1300 min but no max, would it have captured the glidepath even if you had stayed at 1500 from DANDY? Thanks again for the videos the format is excellent!
@thecorporatepilotdad3 жыл бұрын
For flying in those conditions, it depends on the pilot and their personal minimums they have set for themselves based on comfort level and experience. For the type of flying I do, yes, we would fly in weather that low. If we have the minimums for the approach, then yes, we would go. For a mandatory crossing (line above and below the altitude) you have to be at that altitude when you hit the waypoint. It doesn't matter if you descend to that altitude 1 mile or 0.1 mile before it as long as you cross the waypoint AT that altitude. I have a video on how to figure descents that shows what I am about to say. In real life we have a small arc on the MFD that moves based on the altitude we're going to and the current rate of descent. We can descend to put that small arc on the fix and we know we'll hit it. In FS2020 and in real life, you can look at your ETA to the next fix. Say it is 500 feet below you and your ETE to the next fix is 2 minutes. You would have to descend at 250 feet per minute to hit it at the prescribed altitude. In FS2020, the GPS doesn't display the GPS Glide Path (Glide Path on GPS apps, and Glide Slope on ILS approaches) correctly until you hit the fix prior to the runway. Theoretically, yes and I believe it works this way in FS2020, it will intercept the glide path from above 1300 feet on that approach (provided you are beyond the FAF) and it will take you down so you'll be at or near 1300 feet when you cross the FAF (STICC). Those were some great questions!

Question: is there a way (in FS2020), to, let's say, in your example, join the RNAV from waypoit DANDY (instead of DWURF). It happened to me on VATSIM, the ATC gave me flight vectors to a waypoint that was NOT the first waypoint into an RNAV. I could use autopilot to go DIRECT to the waypoint requested by the ATC, but then, when I load and activate the approach, the magenta line (and thus the NAV autopilot) forces me to go arround and re-enter via the first waypoint that the ATC made me skip (because I was coming from another direction). another way to phrase : is there a way to enter a specific leg of an RNAV (IRL or in FS2020)
@thecorporatepilotdad3 жыл бұрын
One thing you may be able to do, and I have done it a few times but it's been a while, instead of selecting direct and entering the waypoint they clear you to, delete ALL the waypoints prior to the fix they want you to go to. It should leave the waypoint you need and take you direct by default. I was typing my response and the more I thought about it, I think that is a way around having to fly that big teardrop pattern FS2020 puts in by default. See if that works for you. In real life we press direct and select DANDY and go straight to it and then fly the final approach course. You can always tell ATC (in VatSim) that you are unable and tell them what you can do. I do not like how FS2020 draws that big teardrop pattern.

In real life, you would select the 2nd DANDY then move it to the top on the legs page and it will go direct. I hope they fix these FMCs or someone comes out with a payware FMC/FMS that works like a real one. It will be so much easier.

I have a video on how to build a route in the Boeing FMCs. You could do it that way but if you did that, you would not have a glide path for the GPS approach and you would have to control altitude on your own. In real life, we cannot type in a route on an approach and it must be selected out of the list of approaches. However, this is FS2020 and everyone does what they need to do to make it work. Sorry I couldn't help on that one. It's just a limitation of the simulator right now.

Why does it take on an arc to get to DWURF rather than straight?

That is how Asobo programmed that part of the sim. It's not right and there is a way around it. I did another video on how to bypass the arc. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGeaZq2bpqeCnqc

@@thecorporatepilotdad yeah very frustrating; I wish they'd get this fixed. I don't see entry holds or course reversals as are a part of actual appr plate too. Thanks for pointing to your other video, as I will use the work around to at least avoid that arc.

@@rammstein1903 Ditto on getting those crazy arcs fixed. With the Garmin NXi being worked on, the crazy arcs will soon become a thing of the past. If you don't have the Garmin NXi it can be downloaded in the marketplace (PC). It is not a finished product but it will be amazing when it is completed. Vectors to final can be selected on the NXi which is missing from MSFS default GPS systems.

@@thecorporatepilotdad Thanks I'll take a look at that. I would like it if the GNS and GTN series navigators worked properly since that's what I use in real life.
