I was wondering if any of the commenters on this video would bring this up! Cheers mate ~ yes, the Custodes are to a Space Marine what a Space Marine is to a Regular Joe or Jane member of the Imperial Guard. Part of the reason they were created was to have a guaranteed safeguard that'd be able to kill Space Marines (kind of like how the Custodes killed all of the Thunder Warriors when they had served their purpose). The process behind the creation of a Custodes is entirely different, and IIRC, I believe it's bespoke and individualized to the person becoming the Custodes, whereas the Space Marine's are more mass-produceable and (comparatively) cheaper to produce.

Just to clarify, space marines are made using a gene seed that can’t be used on females due to hormone differences and some other lore specific stuff. Custodians aren’t space marines, and they aren’t made with gene seeds. It’s a wholly different process that the first borne sons of nobles in Terra (40K earth) were put through. I don’t recall anything saying the process would work on males exclusively, but it was heavily implied… until two weeks ago.

Or the Sisters of Silence! More people should read Chris Wraight's "Watchers of the Throne" series, it features one of my favorite duo's in all of 40k lore - The Custodes Shield Captain Valerian, and Sister of Silence Tanau Aleya who was a Witch-Seeker initially, but got promoted to being a Knight-Centura (something I only realized upon further research is that she's also known as an Oblivion Knight [which is frankly just really dang cool]). These two worked together in the two novels that have been released so far, and effectively saved the Imperium twice, with both being recognized and honored for their contribution by Guilliman upon his return to Terra. Their dynamic in the book is really well established, makes Valerian a better character because of their interactions (something he himself notes multiple times), and definitely gives the feeling that the Sisters of Silence were the other half of the Custodes as a combat force making them WAY more effective against some pretty insane forces. If you're reading this comment this far, and are interested in either of these subfactions of the Imperium at all, I cannot recommend the books highly enough.

Male Space Marines and Custodes have their genitalia removed, because it is also not necessary. All they need is muscle, limbs, and extra organs. The male body naturally have the advantage in muscle mass, enough said. That is why they are the Space Marines. If a woman Space Marine existed, it would be more difficult to create and more costly. From the genital mutilation, increasing muscle growth, etc etc. Male already is winning in terms of efficiency and resources in that regard. You would just be making the woman into a man while it's already been/being genetically altered. What's the point? You realize Space Marines are basically clones of their respective Primarchs, right? They released two figures with their own story lines, and no one bought them. They then decided that no one wanted them, and built the lore after that point. I don't think there should be - don't get me wrong - but it's pretty undeniable that this company is, was, and always will be about profit - they are infamous for designing a figure and then trying to build some rules around that figure - rather than the other way around. Same goes here - no one wanted female space marines, because no one bought them when they did release them, so they invented the lore to go with that.
