@@mitchbuchannon6637It's because most people will only ever hear the compressed CD version where the compression only accentuates (in a bad way) the particular drum sound on this album. If you listen to the vinyl you'll change your mind. It sounds great and has great dynamics. As a side note, I had a similar experience with Tool's Fear Inoculum. CD just wasn't enjoyable to listen to, harsh. Now, vinyl totally different story.

They hate it because they've only been exposed to the overly compressed CD version where the drums do sound like they were recorded in a can. Get yourself a vinyl version, different experience altogether.

When you don't know it's from St. Anger you are not pre destined to hate on it. That poor album gets so much shit but with a live performance there are some good songs there.

The best backup vocals I’ve ever heard from KH. I might be in the lesser numbers here, but I actually like St. Anger, especially Dirty Window! Love the reaction and analysis as always!

This song was the best track on that entire album. The album didn't resonate with a lot of people (read: everyone), but this was the best track in my opinion on the album. What got everyone was that the band followed the Nu-Metal trend and went Drop C tuning then down 2 steps from that; everyone was hoping Metallica would breathe some life back into metal at that time, especially after S&M, but one easily could have replaced the band with Korn or Sevendust and it would have sounded the same. It was the lack of solos and the drop C tuning that threw everyone off. But this track stood out, as I could easily see Cliff playing something like this, and it shows. And the phrasing you're looking for (and I'm going by ear as well) is flat 6, 5th, 4th, 5th. Like playing a G/B, then going to B5, then E, then back to B5. your root note stays at B, but your other finger goes from G to F# to E, back to F#. something similar to that.

To be fair, this resonated with me when it came out, I was 13 and angry with everything and everyone. This album played loudly summed up my confused teenage angst, plus it pissed my mother off no end played as loudly as I did. Still enjoy it now too.

Hello David. Let me explain to you the relationship of fans and the St.Anger album. The album, production/sound wise, is actual shit. Like for real, shit. The album was rightly hated, however, the songs despite being not that great on the album, were surprisingly amazing live. And the album, while it still gets a lot of hate, it has become this somewhat a weird classic of Metallica? If I could say it like that? For example, as you saw now, Frantic and St.Anger songs got a lot of play during 2018/2019 tours, All Within My Hands acoustic version is now the main version, even played in S&M2 Live Album, and it sounds MILES and LEAGUES better than the album version. And since 2022, Dirty Window song from the St.Anger album has now become a fixture on Metallica setlists. Like I said... St.Anger has now become this sort of weird classic of an album for the Metallica fans. Like yeah... it's shit, but live these songs sound actually legit amazing. (I personally don't mind the production, the album singing and the studio song versions, but I look at music objectively myself so I won't fully defend it). If you decide to listen to the studio versions... be prepared. You'll then understand. But just keep in mind, that the studio versions may be shit, but the live renditions are a whole different story. Hell, people got stoked and excited like hell when that red St.Anger fist appeared live on the screen behind James and the gang, and suddendly you heard Frantic or St.Anger live.

As some people have already said, the st anger is in a weird classic spot, that on album sounds terrible, but live it sound really fcking amazing for some strange reason, luckily they made a whole album playthrough live on studio so usually people go to those live sesions if they want to actually enjoy the album, because dear god the album production makes And justice for all and Death magnetic sound like they have godlike production.

People don’t like this album, and understandably, but I really dig it, the snare may sound like a tin can, there may be no solos and the production may be lacking, but the rawness and feel of the album really mirrors what the band was going through at the time, it’s a rough listen at first but over time you can get used to and appreciate it.

@@THEDavidHeretic Yeah, you really don't :)) The lifestyle and deathstyle line didn't register at all. Their St. Anger album is pretty significant in that the backdrop of the recording sessions is a tumultuous therapy (with a psychotherapist and all) that doesn't even work on the band. James went to rehab at some point. The lyrics or some of them come from Kirk in this song ( my lifestyle determines my deathstyle). There aren't many solos in the album if any at all. - which pissed off Kirk to no end- There is a whole documentary of it, takes you to the band from the start of Jason leaving until Rob getting chosen. The live versions of St. Anger songs tend to be better.

St Anger has some really good writing on it, but there are a lot of odd missteps. It's as if you had a band on the edge of breaking up, with members who were afraid to go "Yeah, that part sucks, let's take it out." All Within My Hands has one of the best riffs they've ever done. My World and Dirty Window are both great songs. I don't really dislike anything on the album except Invisible Kid, which I hate with the fire of a thousand suns. So many great moments on the album. That said, the production (or lack thereof) is horrendous. And the snare sound looms over everything making sure that it can't sound good.

A lot of St. Anger is a mess, but I honestly think this song live shows how much better it would've been if they weren't on their "barely produced" kick at the time. Given some meat on it's bones (and a snare), you can see where this song continues on the sort of "groove metal" that Metallica was treading in in the late 90s. That swing (especially in the half-time sections) really gives the song a bounce that makes it lots of fun. The lyrics and vocals are still below what we expect from James, though.
