Be careful with hack #2. I worked for an airline for 23 years, and I know the airline I worked for had an automated system that would cancel the remainder of your itinerary if you missed any flight in your original itinerary. And their justification is that you breached your contract with them by not showing up for your flight. I can't tell you how many angry passengers I have spoken with when they discovered their return trip was canceled from trying to game the system.

Just be careful when doing an all-airport city search, especially in Europe. There are some airports that low-cost carriers claim are city airports that are very far from the relevant city, and the connections are often expensive. For example Paris-Beauvais (BVA) is 85 km from Paris.

Two tips for frequent flyer programs: 1) If you have an address outside of the carrier's country (U.S. address for Air France), the miles to attain status levels is easier, and you'll get more miles per flight as you move up in status. 2) International flights give more miles. I used to fly Paris-Geneva (a short flight) twice a week, and I really piled on the miles.

An additional concern with hack #2 is when the airlines change the stopover airport due to their scheduling and cancellation issues. For example, a flight from El Paso to Syracuse with stopover in Newark gets changed to DC. I have had the stopover airports changed on me several times by different airlines and different routes. (I was not trying to get off at the stopover city, so it wasn't a problem for me but would be for the hack users.)

I've been watching prices for about 8 months for a trip we just returned from to Orlando. We ended up driving instead of flying but the prices were actually best about a week before we went. Prices ranged around $300 round trip for months leading up to our trip and dropped to about $100 for a few days about a week and a half prior. Then gradually went back up. Thankful we chose to drive as a flight we would have likely booked ended up being canceled and 9 people we know had to rent a car to drive back to an airport 2 and a half hours in the opposite direction from home to Orlando where they left their cars. We beat them home by about 12 hours.
@mjc632 жыл бұрын
When I was flying weekly I used to knit 3 roundtrip tickets around one another in the opposite directions. So I would book a rt LGA-RSW-LGA and a separate RSW-EWR-RSW and a FLL-LGA-LGA and this was never questioned. Of course I did have to keep a spreadsheet on where my car was in Florida and once goofed and to rent a $14 Avis and drive from West Palm to Ft Lauderdale! But it saved a fortune and was challenging as well.

Mix and Match airlines works *if* you know the connector airport REALLY WELL. Airlines are usually in different terminals, so it is often not so easy to "just" walk to the next departure gate. *cough Salt Lake City* *glares at Philly* (Keep in mind as well: arrivals sometimes run late, so connections on another airline can get too tight.) Do your homework and be careful to allow way more than plenty of time between flights if you attempt this!!!

My pet peeve is when airports don't let you get from any one gate to any other gate while staying inside the secure area. Going through TSA once is enough (even pre check). Some major airports (LAX, SFO, MCO, etc) will make you go out of security and back in depending on which terminals you transfer to. That's way outdated these days! IAH (Houston Intercontinental) allows you access all over the huge airport once you pass through TSA and that's a big help for me because if I can't get on one airline flight I can hop over to another airline and try that one and do it relatively quickly. Others (like SLC and ATL) don't make you go through security again but they're a pain to change terminals.

These tips are so helpful and I can’t wait to check it out and starting using it. Have you tried it yet?
@MelissaC2692 жыл бұрын
I hope you pin my post because this is important. If you do the skiplagged trick and you don't go through to your final destination, do NOT plan your return flight with the same airline. When the airline knows you skiplagged, it often cancels your return flight and you will end up paying last minute for another ticket at full price. If you do skiplag, there is always a risk. You should not tie your frequent flyer # to the flights, and you should return home with a different airline. Serial skiplaggers have been caught and made to go into the next airplane to finish the last leg and some have been sued. You figure out if it's worth the risk. Also, remember when you use gift cards for flights, you are not protected by your credit card's insurance. If you use a gift card and put a portion on a Chase Sapphire, then the entire flight is insured for trip interruption and flight cancellations, and lost luggage. Check to see what your credit card includes. Amex requires the entire trip be booked. But other cards only require a portion of your trip be on the card to be covered.

So many folks were left stranded and without recourse because the terms and conditions are those of Costco and not the vendor or a true TA that books directly with a vendor. Booking through Costco is nowhere near the same a booking with a trusted travel partner. Even if they ultimately go through a 'travel agent' of sorts, there is no service, half is due at booking, and it is non-refundable. That's a big gamble that too many people end up losing, sadly. when the economy (specifically gas prices) is unstable, airlines will inflate prices to compensate for the potential increase in costs 6 months down the road since they are basically trying to predict the cost of gas six months from now. unfortunately, whether the prices will come down closer to the date of travel probably has more to do with demand than it does gas prices at that time though.

@The Deal Guy , be very careful with that trick of getting off on the first stop and not continuing, If that is supposed to be around trip ticket it will very likely void out the return flight because they will assume you never continued, on the last leg. It happened to my college children coming home for a holiday. There was nothing that the airline would do. I had to pay again for them to get new tickets at the airport counters because they would not allow boarding. It was a super expensive mistake. in a nutshell, this trick might work without possible issues... if you buy two separate one way tickets ( for a round trip ) with the 'money saving' layover stop ... and yes of course , don't check-in bags!

Good info but too much to retain. A list of the websites and their benefits for users would be helpful. If it could be screenshot would be perfect.

@Mr Deal Guy, FYI airline terminology A "Direct Flight" is a flight with a stop over. (some stop overs will NOT let you off the plane if it's timed for p/u passengers only.) Non-stop is just that. There are no stops. Back to direct flights, some flights require you to get off and reboard another plane for the next leg of your trip. (will work for your trip hack!)

My advice is to book using layover flights because it is cheaper but takes twice as long.remember that your gonna be moving from one gate to another gate & use your in flight wifi to get to know the airport before you arrive & allow atleast 2 hours.

I like these flying videos. P. S. I still haven't found outdoor solar lights that last for at least a year ! My neighbors put up a new white vinyl fence w/ solar lights on top. Almost all of them no longer work. Yes Im that person !

If you're going to do the stopover trick and I'm surprised you didn't mention this in the video because it would be easy to not think about this but make sure you're only doing carry on and a personal item because if you have luggage that you have checked it will end up in your final destination city so like if you were going from Austin to Kansas City your checked bags will continue on to Kansas City even though you got off in Chicago.

This all applies to travelling within USA only. When travelling internationally then things get A LOT different.

Please be careful and read all cancellation and refund information especially with third party sites. They tend to have fees that have nothing to do with the airline. So if a flight is cancelled you may not get all the money you used to book returned as the airline did not receive all of those funds.
@DBR002 жыл бұрын
Word of advice. You are not able to get on a flight midway through the routing. For example, lets say you book a flight from SNA (Orange County) to New York with a connection in LAX. You will not be permitted to skip the SNA segment and get on at LAX. If you miss the first segment, the entire rest of the reservation will be cancelled as a no show.

Another tip… it’s ok to book with third party sites, but when you have irregular operations like late flights and cancellations it can be very hard to get assistance from third party if you can reach the at all. They make it difficult. When you book direct through airline or hotel they have more leeway to help you and adjust your ticket and make allowances they won’t make for third party. If you are a loyalty card member you have more privileges and they can tend to possibly give you more favor.

I’m just seeing this, and it’s gall good advice. However, I have a question. If you book a flight with a connection, you get it off the flight at the first stop, won’t they charge you the difference between the two flights?

I've done a tour of buying one way tickets around Europe and can safely say that if you have no plans and are spontaneous like me can get £4 to £30 tickets really easily up to 5 hrs before the flight.... to on about 10 destinations regularly.

Thanks for the tips, I do wish the airlines would get rid of recline in their planes, there's nothing worse than an ice cold drink falling in your lap during drink service.
@Aviator27J2 жыл бұрын
I hear ya on that, but you know people would lose their collective crap if airlines removed the recline function. It would be nice from a maintenance perspective too, but without passing along a cost savings, people would just complain about more uncomfortable seats that now cost more.
@BasedInBrazil2 жыл бұрын
Or have the simple courtesy to tell the passager behind you I'm going to recline my sit.
@mariagrace112 жыл бұрын
Recline can be annoying for the person behind me, but I do it (slowly) because I have back and neck pain and the recline often helps ease pain. It’s not personal.

Dont get banned with trick #2. If you do this too often, airline will eventually blacklist you.
