Thank you for the dive into the fascism of the "Republic" of Korea in the south, it's a part of history that often gets omitted in English speaking spaces. Too often you hear people jump straight from the occupation by Japan to "and then the Japanese and Korean economies boomed as productive suppliers for US consumerism", with barely a moment to mention "tHe ThIrTy EiGhTh PaRaLleL", as if that is all that is necessary to understand why there are two States on the Korean peninsula. Even among leftists, it's often easy to fall into an purely "America bad" critique that only focuses on the atrocities committed by the US military during the war, which of course should be denounced as the vile, demonic acts of barbarism they were, and missing the fact that the South Korean leadership really was chosen because they were the most rapid, fascist anti-communists available. If the people of Korea ever want to be whole again, that class of opportunists, and their consequences and inheritors today, will have to be reckoned with.

"South Korean leadership really was chosen because they were the most rapid, fascist anti-communists available." If you know anything about modern SK history this is totally untrue. When the peninsula was split under a trusteeship after the Japanese were defeated, the US did not have a clear plan as to what Korea would be, mostly because the US did not know what their future relationship with the USSR would be. The USSR had a clear vision of establishing a communist aligned state in Korea and worked towards this goal. While in the South, the future was more open ended because the US did not have a plan yet. They left the previous Japanese administrators in place for a year and a half before they started to manage it themselves while take on Korean apprentices. This meant that all the fractured independence groups that were non-communists, or non-Soviet styled communists, established themselves in the South. The US did not choose any of the SK dictators. From 1945-1950, before the war, people who were distrustful of the USSR or were anti-communists made there way South. There was a lot of political violence that occurred in both the North and South at this time, the communists succeeded in the North because they had the sponsorship of the USSR, while in the South there were many Japanese collaborators, KPG independence members, hypernationalists, and street gangs that were anti-communists. A political divide occurred because there was widespread political persecutions, and people seeking refuge would go to the other side where the oppressing side had no authority due to the "joint" trusteeship. The US did not choose Syngman Rhee, Park Chung Hee, or Chun Doo Hwan. These men came to power because they already succeeded in mobilizing support for themselves. In fact, the relevant American presidents of the time did not like any of these men. The personal relationships between both the SK and American leadership was quite poor during the dictator era of SK. The dominant reason for why the US chose to recognize them was largely because of strategic military importance.

I worked in Korea for a major chaebol. We had morning exercise/company propaganda sessions; the TV in the office would turn itself on at 10am every day. My older coworkers told me how the company used to have haircut regulations (where have we heard that before?). You'd be surprised how many of their mega projects in the 60s and 70s were because of the close relationship between the founder and Park. We made a "shrine" to the founder and the number of photos with him and Park is huge. The relationship still exists today, with a fairly recent president (2MB) having been an exec before going into politics. Thank you for mentioning the warcrimes of South Korean troops in Vietnam. The government likes to paint South Korea as an innocent angel, if not perpetual victims.

The South Korean government is aware of the warcrimes committed by its troops in Vietnam and offered reparations to the Vietnamese government, but the Vietnamese government declined. I can't speak to if the event is taught or is brushed off within the SK education system, but it's not in the public consciousness of SK and Vietnam because SK and Vietnam have maintained an amicable positive relationship, making the matter a non issue for both parties.

No they didn't this is a highly misconstrued and storied telling of history. The facts are right, but stuff is either omitted or missing as to not interfere with the narrative. Like when saying Park Chung Hee was a weeb cause he took on a Japanese name. During the occupation period, every Korean had a Japanese name, it was mandatory. You can call Park Chung Hee a weeb for a lot of reasons, but this was the worst example chosen.

Great episode. I think the most frustrating thing for me is that these right wing fascist regimes are considered totally divorced from America and the capitalist system, despite being direct and PURPOSEFUL resuts of both. People are quick to talk about North Korea and Maoist China but the white terror in KMT Taiwan is glossed over. Its treated as a sort of isolated case. Same with the regimes in South Korea. People focus on the economic "miracles" of these regimes but ignore the dictatorships because dictators have become synonymous with "communism." Its a really bullshit revisionist history and its kind of amazing that people, even many many so called leftists, fall into the same pattern of focussing on comminist regimes and ignoring fascist capitalist regimes all sponsored by the leader of the free world, the United States of America!

I really wanna see an exhaustive list of book recommendations by Hakim - the two noted in this episode seem curious for particular purposes (those interested in modern Korea, and more generally the rise of parts of the modern world) - I wanna see all of the recommendations he has. It’s important to note how shamelessly desperate the US was to inject “democracy” into Koreans in spite of the fact that those living in the South repeatedly rebelled against the US and even fled to the North. The Korean War erupted when comrades in the South instigated an uprising which compelled the north to unleash their forces across the 38th.
