At 10:12: This can probably be explained by the drugs some insurgents were using during the war, such as liquid adrenaline or various other type of drugs that can make a person immune to pain to a certain period of time. There were stories very similar to yours about insurgents still being able to run and fight after being shot multiple times.

My love hate relationship with the M16-A4. I loved shooting it during firing week, but I hated carrying that damn thing everywhere we went in Bootcamp. It wasnt hard to do, just annoying.

Hey thanks for your service Devil Dog. 1st LAI Battalion camp Pendleton CA. switched to Recon Light Armored 1988-1994. Our M-16A2 sucked ass in Dessert Storm. Had to clean the damn thing every hour in the sand box. On another Note, Why the F**k didn't they give you guys M-4 for room clearing. No I Know why.. Fucking Red tape.

I kinda like how you say that there is a new changing firearm world. I honestly think that it is attributed to the raise of the awb in 2004. With a vast civilian market gun manufacturers are becoming more competitive and coming up with better products. Gaining more money and putting that money into R&D for other projects.

The reason the U.S. Military decided to use the 5.56x45 was for a Kill to equipment loss ration. Basically, we wound guys and tie up more of their resources by forcing them to treat their men. This hasn't worked though so I support a full transition back to 7.62x51 and the use of .45jhp. I also support tighter entry requirements too though so...
@Sevenspent
@Sevenspent 10 жыл бұрын
Well, the other point would be that the 5.56x45 weighs less and soldiers can carry more into a fight. Also I bet the round is a lot cheaper to produce vs bigger rounds..saving money on an already expensive war.

Martin .Luther i also heard that part of the reason for the switch was to help troops match the firepower of the vietnamese troops in longer firefights. i want to say that US troops were either running low on ammo quickly or were overwhelmed with incoming fire

The 5.56 is more than up to the task. It is a force multiplier, in case you did not know there were a lot of Russians that would come across the Iron Curtain and they would most likely outnumber the Americans in Europe. Our boys had to be able to carry more rounds and they had to stay in the fight longer. In a "conventional war" the ability to wound the enemy is just as valuable as killing them. A dead soldier is just that, dead. A wounded soldier requires that 2 or maybe 3 of his buddies to carry him away and boom 3-4 enemies are now out of the fight. Insurgents are a different story, but you should know as a Marine that you would never leave a wounded buddy to bleed out. The Russians were clearly impressed and hung up their 7.62x39(outdated WW2 cartridge) and adopted the 5.45x39. The 5.56 is designed to yaw but the problem is actually kind of simple, Afghans and Iraqis were malnourished. Their torso's were not wide enough, since the round yaw's after 7 inches. The new M855A1 round yaw's no more than 3 inches after impact. The rounds that hit that insurgent you mentioned probably over penetrated. Oh and the 5.56 was designed with body armor in mind. The round is narrow and travels at high velocity. The steel penetrator at its core is designed to punch through armor, so don't worry about that. Even if it can't penetrate the armor; maybe its ceramic based, the ability to hit follow up shots will be key since ceramic armor shatters to diffuse energy. The less recoil of an M16 coupled with the 5.56 will defeat body armor and injure/kill the combatant. The M16 is one of the finest military rifles ever made. Gene Stoner and Melvin Johnson are fucking geniuses and the reason why there is little to no innovation is because there is nothing wrong with it. If it is a new western designed rifle, then if probably was developed using the AR-15, AR-18, and/or the Johnson Bolt. The M16 has been in service longer than any rifle in US history. The vast majority of US service men like their rifles, even in Vietnam where the problems were caused not by the rifle, but by the dirty ammo and no cleaning kits. They were told that they did not have to clean their rifles so they were careless with them. You mentioned bad oil, well that's not the rifle itself. You also mentioned that it is not a designated marksman rifle. I don't see the problem, it wasn't designed for that. It is the same reason why the Russians designed the SVD, the AK is not a marksman rifle. 550 yards is not standard for fire fights. Even in WW2, 300 was pretty average. The days of Marines at Belleau Wood mowing down krauts at 600+ yards with Springfields is over.

The guys who say they're getting a 1/4" or similar group at 500 yards are also typically using hand loaded ammo, slow fire, a 24-26" heavy barrel, match trigger, Nightforce 8-32x scope, you name it. At that point the rifle is good for one thing and one thing only, and that's firing small groups from a seated position on a bench. Which I guess says good things about the versatility of the platform: you can build it to do what you want, but comparing those rifles to an average AR-15 is like comparing an F-150 to a Mac dump truck. 6.5 mm bullets are all-around awesome. 6.5 Grendel can be bought for $0.30/round, 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5x47 Lapua can reliably hit targets 1000m away, for about the same recoil as a .308. My experience has been that the 6.5 Grendel out of a 16" barrel drops only a little bit more than a 5.56 out of a 20" barrel, but drifts far less in the wind, and hits with more authority at any range. Gravity is much more predictable than the wind anyway. A Grendel out of a 20" barrel is even better, but at that point it's getting harder to lug around, and I start wondering why I didn't just pack the Creedmoor.

The SCAR-H is big and bulky, and its a fairly heavy weapon. The "wobbly ass stock" isn't that wobbly at all. The M-16, M4 variants have been around for the longest time and very reliable. I doubt either of you know much about weapons because you would know everything i just said.
@Bigpimpdaddy69
@Bigpimpdaddy69 10 жыл бұрын
The SCAR 17 not 'H', but anyways you are on the right track with the SCAR platform. At CQB the SCAR 16 that shoots a 5.56 has a lower recoil and shoot faster with a lower recoil round. The stock is not 'wobbly' it is one of the best stocks out there. I think we should switch to the 16 so we can use the same round and mag as the other weapons, the M4/M16 variants aren't as good we need a switch.

5.56 was actually design to reduce casualties in vietnam so that they could try and collect more information about the enemy. The 5.56 was a round that was designed to injure and not kill. Soldiers that started to use that weapon system hated it because of the tolerances on it were so tight that a little bit of sand just shut the weapon system down.
@Rcassidygaming

No, the Army decided not to pursue FNHUSA's SCAR platform to to subtle flaws in design, like the cycling charging handle and weak stock. The H&K 400 series is now their main focus in future weaponry. A familiar platform with piston driven internals.

This, I've heard a story from a marine who used a Mk12 Mod 0, took seven rounds to get him to stop fighting and then another through the back of the skull down and out through the jaw to take him down. The Mk12 uses some nice 5.56 rounds too, very high quality. I'd definitely say that something like a 6.8 should be standard caliber and even .300 BLK as a quiet caliber instead of subsonic 5.56 which is even worse as the main point of the round is velocity.

Actually, in 2008 the XM8's had achieved the standard for combat effectiveness, other then with the multi-platform dimension the gun was based upon the barrels overheated quite often and had the rare chance of melting, so before the addressed the issue, the quit funding on the project. I'd like to see them return to it though, possibly invest in a H&K variant.

What about the AAC Honey Badger for room clearing? It's from the AR platform with means easy to shoot, easy to reload, easy to clean (not easier than to clean an AK tho), and it's actually a very compact PDW rifle chambered in .300AAC with gets the job done at close quarters.

SPR-12 will put a pretty tight shot at 800 yards. The M14's sometimes issued as DMR's can put 1-ft grouping at about 1,200 yards, if they got the right shooter.

aside from the problems it still has after over 80 modifications in the span of 18 years. problems such as being right handed only unless you love hot brass being ejected into your cheek (there is no way to shoulder it on the left and not have it eject into your face) the sloppy trigger (something plaguing all bullpup designs to date AFAIK) trouble reloading (another bullpup downfall you lose all sight picture to look at the mag well) and fumes from fired shots next to your face

Hey DDG, I have been binging these old videos of yours, and they're awesome. I was wondering if you still hold the same opinions about the m16 platform in general. Nowadays we have the newest Sig Spear NGSW contract and people have very mixed opinions on it. Gun culture nowadays has pretty much accepted that the AR-15 platform is the standard infantry rifle for everyday use. It would be interesting to see how your opinons have changed/stayed the same.

hey devil, i read somewhere that the reason our military uses the 556 is because, in conventional warfare, when you look at it in a strategic way, if you kill a guy instantly, he is gone for good, but if you can injure him and cause the use of labor and capital on him, then that could sometimes be more beneficial. now personally if i was face to face with the enemy, i would want nothing more than to put him down instantly, but the guys who call the shots aren't in those shoes. thanks for the vd

When i was in the army in Norway we used AG-3, a modified G3A5 made by Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk. This weapon was 7,62mm and powerful enough to shoot through trees. That was a fucking awesome weapon, but now it has been replaced by the Heckler & Koch HK416.

I did read your comment wrong, but I'm not sure on that. Two rounds of a weaker round versus a single place 7.62x39 caliber would have different but possibly similar results. My guess is that, regardless of how many shots you hit in one place, the bullet doesn't have any more power then the last, versus the other (single) round which, will have more penetration and due to the weight, greater ballistics entering the target and hence causing a larger, more devastating wound.

I've heard that military rounds are actually designed primarily to wound, the thinking behind it being that killing someone is one thing, but wounding them still removes them from the fight, but also forces their mates to a) use more resources to keep them alive in hospital and whatnot, which also increases costs and b) demoralizing them as they have to deal with their screaming wounded friend. While I'm not positive about this, it does seam to make sense. In a messed up sort of way.

What is the rifle twist rate on Marine M16/M4 and the Army M4? 1:7 I believe, which is suited towards the standard issue 62 grain M855 round. With a 1:8 twist it would stabilize the 77 grain round better (but that requires a re-barreling of millions of rifles) The Canadian Forces C7 and C8 use a 1:7 twist suited for the C77 round which is also 62 grains.

A former coworker of mine served in Vietnam, and had the same complaint about the M16 in combat. Amusingly, he said they once lined up all their M16's and shot them up with a captured AK, in hopes of getting M14's as replacements.

I think the m16a4 has a 20" barrel so OAL is 40 inchs it is a looonnnggg as rifle. But ballistics and volicity wise its better than having an SBR 10.5" barrel m4. I have a spikes tactical 14.5 with a ta31f acog and that thing is balls accurate. Love that rifle

wild boar... Oh lord... Used to live in Georgia, I've had to deal with them attacking animals on more then one occasion. Don't own a rifle, myself, but I've fired an AR-15 before. You're right, it WAS long. I kinda expected a musket or an old mosin to be long, but The AR caught me off guard with that. As for the .223/5.56. Better then a stick, so they say, but if my life depended on it? Not sure I'd go with that particular round. Was fun to shoot, though.

Bet you would like clearing rooms with an M14 even less but I agree besides that the 7.62 is great. However I use a G3 now and I'm the shooter on a Carl Gustav grenade rifle in Sweden, and carrying both is a pain. I'd prefer in my current role to have a smaller and lighter assault rifle on me. The G3 is both long and heavy, great for shooting but not for running around with.

I know your talking about grouping with an m16 and standard military ball like xm193 or xm855 which isnt the most accurate. and the average m16 doesnt have a bull barrel. I know there 1/7 twist but if you have a 20" AR with match grade ammo and a wilson combat single stage match trigger Iv seen people get 1.5 MOA at 650 yards. But for an average rifle compared to 7.62x39 its much more accurate. But a battle rifle like the scar17 in 308 to me is much mroe accraute and WAY more stopping power

I do agree with your reasoning here... If you do lots of close quarter ops and mountain and so on so on... why do they give you a long rifle not very accurate at longdistance for short to medium engagements? Makes no sence but ok it might have to do with what they buy for you... Spetznas use the kinda sized weapons as you speak of. Same as many special units, why not you? Very entertaining video! :)

Reloading drills are so awkward and inefficient with any bullpups. That's why a lot of soldiers, when they have the choice, will prefer a front well rifle. Bull pups are neat, and have a place, but they still have a few kinks for combat use. A short barreled M4 or compact type of PDW will out maneuver and reload faster than a bullpup with an awkward sight picture and reload. The downfall of the SA 80 in clearing is its sights are set too far back to be able to pull up accurately in close quarter

7.62 is almost the only caliber used by conscriptees in the finnish military and I would've loved to try 5.56 for combat exercises just because I didn't feel that the 7.62 was really suitable for engagements below 150 meters.
@jaybtlr
@jaybtlr 11 жыл бұрын
I believe the 5.56 NATO round is to conform with the Geneva convention on using reasonable force and such things. Its also based on the logic that it takes more time, effort and resources to cater for a wounded soldier than a dead one, causing a larger detriment to the enemy forces. If one man dies, the squad can continue , if a man is injured, someone has to deal with the wounded, leaving the squad at a moreso reduced operational capacity

Well its not really a fragmentation round its actualy a match grade bullet for the SPR. But its known to fragment and be more effective than m855/ss109. Even in shorter barreled rifles.
