Based on the suicide prevention message at the end you have earned a subscriber. I hope this doesn't sound silly; however, I actually got a little emotional at how genuine the message was. Very kind of you. I am a stage IV cancer patient and I certainly have my 'hard' days. Death is indeed permanent and if someone like me can find a reason to keep going, then anyone can. Life is such a gift and there are so many great games, books, movies and musical compositions to explore. Not to mention that the board gaming community is full of so many wonderful people. Get involved on BGG, or other places, and you'll be sure to find some like-minded individuals. Anyway, these are tough times and many of us are alone a lot more right now. Keep your chin up and stay safe. Please, please use the hotline if you need someone to talk to. Take care and happy gaming!

What a great video -- I have a tremendous interest in solo games/games that can be played solo, and now I have some new titles to track down (especially Castle Itter). Thanks for posting. And OMG, as the kids say (do they still say that?), the silent film Imperial Assault-Zombicide mashup will have me grinning for days! Excellent video as always, Cody. A couple of suggestions for other solo games: Pavlov's House (see also Castle Itter). Highly recommend The Wars of Marcus Aurelius - amazing CDG about the Roman suppression of the Germanic tribes. Thanks for the message at the end of the video. Very often such messages come across as trite or sanctimonious, but it was clear that you were speaking from the heart. Cheers!

Glad I stuck around until the end. Great content. A lot of games I haven't heard of before. Did I just see Ahsoka Tano fight a zombie? But seriously love the plug about the hotline at the end. So many people are struggling right now. I can speak from personal experience that I used to deal with depression and know that life can seem pretty isolating at times. But there are always more boardgames to play. I'd like to think that us boardgamers are never alone. And even though I will probably never meet most people in person my heart goes out to others. We are never alone even if were are playing solo.

Retro recommendation that's available these days as a free pdf: Star Smuggler, a microgame from Heritage's old Dwarfstar range. You're playing a Han Solo-style indie starship owner trying to make ends meet in a small cluster of star systems. Despite the small format it's got remarkable depth and replay value, and the different systems come to life far more than usually see in these "read the paragraph and choose" games. Overall feel is a pleasant mix of many old scifi series, including the John Grimes and Dumarest of Terra stories - or Traveller and Star Wars, if the books are unfamiliar. Well worth trying for the low, low cost of some printer ink. Also has a very similar cousin called Barbarian Prince, which is a bit lighter on mechanics and has a fantasy theme. Fun, but I slightly prefer Star Smuggler out of the two. You can find them both on the same free pdf site, along with five of the six other games in the range, most of which are also worth a look for scifi/fantasy wargame fans.

Hi Cody, I just found out about your channel the other day when I was on the GMT games website ordering of The US Civil War and I happened to see a link to one of your videos on another product page and I liked what I saw and subscribed to your channel. I watched your video on your favorite WW2 games and I didn't see it mentioned, so I decided to check this video and didn't see it either. So I was wondering, have you played D-Day at Omaha Beach by Decision Games? I personally have NOT played it yet, but I'm going to be picking it up soon and was just curious if you've tried it and what your thoughts were. If you're not familiar with it, it's solo wargame about the Omaha beach landing; it's a solitaire game, and it's played with cards. AH LCG is a huge money sink, but it's awesome. The core scenarios don't really do it justice, the game really starts to shine with the Dunwich cycle, and Carcosa cycle is possibly the best Lovecraftian boardgame experience out there. I don't know any other game which achieved that level of immersiveness while still having strong gameplay (and keeps toying with the players in various creative ways, which is completely in line with the theme of investigators losing their grips with reality).

I was a former Marvel: Legendary owner (with several expansions) but found the set up time a bit of a bear, and I also felt that the mix of cards in the decks didn't give me a feeling of playing an individual hero. With Marvel Champions: The Card Game, I really feel like I am playing as that hero, and it has a true solo mode rather than multi handed solitaire. I'mlooking forward to the first campaign expansion coming out this August...! You should give it a go!

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I hope you get a chance to play Marvel Champions, because it's really good. However, I don't think it's like Arkham Horror in terms of a progressive character campaign (RPG'ish) that's built into it. It's more one-shot right now and beat up the bad guy. I'm curious as to how much the new campaign expansion mixes things up. I do understand your cost concern since you're already into an LCG. MC is my only LCG right now.

Hey Cody... great list, a lot of titles I haven’t heard of before and will have to look into. If you like the “States of Siege” system then check out “Dawn of the Zeds”. It’s very thematic. I usually don’t get into Zombie themed games but this one quickly became a favorite of mine for solo play. I would say it is really a “pure” solo game. Arkham, Eldritch and Mansions of Madness - are these all the same 'world'? are they the same manufacturer? Which is the best to get first as a complete starter to adventure board / card games? last time I played a board game was monopoly 10 odd years ago!
@TheDiscriminatingGamer3 жыл бұрын
They are all from Fantasy Flight Games, part of the Cthulhu Mythos - many have the same or similar art design and similar mechanisms. Personally, my favorite of the bunch is Mansions of Madness. Some people don't care for it because it uses an app, but I think it's tremendous fun. Eldritch is a lot of too. Arkham card game is a fun little game, but I don't necessarily think it's the best gateway into these games. I would avoid Arkham Horror 3rd edition, which is the full Arkham board game. I was not terribly impressed with that one. Are you looking specifically for a solo game, or any game with the Cthulhu theme? Sandy Petersen Games has a great four player game called Cthulhu Wars, if you can find it, and they recently released Cthulhu Wars: Duel for two players.
@russellguyver77463 жыл бұрын
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I really liked the look of the three games I mentioned so it makes sense that, as you've said, they are all part of the same 'world'. I think a game that can be played solo but can also be played as 2, 3 or 4 people would fit my needs. The Cthulhu Theme does seem apealing. I'll look a bit more into these games then. Thanks.

Love the list but I have only played Marvel. I have interest in playing you entire list. Freeman's Farm the most as the site is down the road form me. Some of my solo games I really like are London's Burning, Open Fire, Patton's Best, Tokyo Express, Death Angels (WH40k card game), Elder Sign which scratches the Cathulu itch, and my Favorite game is Raid On St Narzaire. Where you are British Commando's tring to block the U-Boat pens at St Narzaire by crashing a old destroy in to the gate while taking out guards & spotlights. Haven't played it I while but I think you would like it. Nice touch about the hot line I had want to do it when I was in the 3rd grade.

I always thought the St. Nazaire raid would make a great modern movie or novel. Such a fascinating piece of history. I haven't played any of your recommendations.
@douglaspearson48534 жыл бұрын
I understand my likes are Old Avalon Hill Games mostly. London's Burning you play individual pilots during the Blitz kinda like an RPG a lot of fun. Patton's Best you are in a Sherman Tank kinda like a ground version of B-17 which is also a great solitaire game itself. Tokyo Express is a Night Naval Battles around Guadalcanal. Death Angel is a solitaire card version of Space Hulk. Elder Sign is a co-op but can be played solo dice game. Raid would make a Great Movie. The game is a Blast but hard. If you get a chance try it.
@douglaspearson48534 жыл бұрын
On eBay they have the Ballentine soft cover book the Raid Excellent series for $9-$15 and the game is going for around $100. I really like the game but not sure its worth $100.

You have a lot of great friends so solo probably doesn't come up much. But if you haven't played Space Hulk (Fun Game) and can't afford to buy it this will scratch that itch. There are 3 expansions. You should try it.

How much replayability is there in the second edition of Mansions of Madness ?

A lot. Especially if you get the expansions. While basic stories may be the same, a lot cane change in the scenarios the more you add.

Great list indeed, I prefer Legendary Encounters Predator over Marvel, and it fits the solo aspect a lot more. As for the Arkham Horror LCG, I am at that point where, is more really necessary? All in all, good stuff.

I'm primarily a solo gamer, so... yeah... you missed a few (according to me): Hostage Negotiator (save those poor bastards), Tiny Epic Galaxies, This War of Mine, "Rifles in the Ardennes/Pacific", Nemo's War, Combat Infantry (Columbia games), AH's Status Pro Baseball/football/basketball, Warfighter(!!!!!), pretty much any DVG game . Keep up the Fire, Zulus on the wire, ... unfortunately you really can't play ILLUMINATI, and Motainai... good list.

One solo game I enjoy playing is "Warps Edge" by Renegade Game Studios. In it you pilot a space ship (of multiple different ships) to shoot down alien spaceships and their mothership (of your choosing in terms of difficulty). After a set amount of rounds you can upgrade the firepower or defense of your ship, be careful though, if you play carelessly your dead. Game Over.
