After a number of years away from JLR, I was thinking about buying one as a ‘retirement car’. Even though I’ve been bitten by JLR cars so many times, I can’t believe that I was thinking about it again. The worst was an XF which was 3 months out of warranty when the engine ate itself. It had already had over £10k of repairs when this happened and Jaguar wanted iro £13k for a new engine and turbos. The car was worth about £20k by now and I realised it was best to scrap it. After watching your videos on the Discovery, I’m staying with Volvo or one of the German brands. Thank you for bringing me to my senses. 👍

I have owned a 2018 HSE Lux for 6 months now, and have absolutely loved it. To be clear, i don't get to drive it often as my wife wont let it out of her sight. Having purchased it used off of a lease buy back, it came with the Land Rover Certified Pre Owned warranty and coverage. Before taking it off the lot, the dealership noticed that it was a bit sluggish when accelerating, and they replaced all of the ignition coils which seemed to solve the problem. Not sure how common that is, but the dealership was adamant on getting it fixed before i drove away and i have to say that we've been thrilled with it since. The level of care that their mechanics show is exceptional. I've owned many North American domestic and import vehicles and often find that a mechanic is willing to turn a blind eye to small issues, to get your car out of the bay and move on to the next. Kudo's to the professionalism of the JLR team. As for the drivability and reliability, it has been superb so far. The features throughout the vehicle are exceptional, and it really is living up to the hype.

Funny I have the exact same year and have similar spec. Don't have the rear screens, but have massage seats and heads up display. When I first got the car I didn't like the looks, the rear number plate nonsense, not to mention the sheer size of it. As the miles wore on, I absolutely fell in love with it. It has not put a foot wrong and it gives me and the entire family the confidence to go literally anywhere, roads or not. I actually drove it up a ski slope!!! Weather is a non-issue, rain, snow, sleet, scorching heat, no issue, you travel in first class luxury. Having a longer wheelbase than the RRS, it drives nicer too soaking up the bumps thumps that would otherwise made themselves know in the sport. The rear most seats, 3rd row, are not bad either, heated in my spec and work well for the kids anytime, or adults for short hauls. Definitely will get a 2021, love this thing and it is like a Sherman tank through the Canadian winters.

I asked the good Doctor this, perhaps you might have an even more first hand opinion? I currently drive a 2016 RRS, and considering changing to the Disco later this year, it looks like you may have done a similar thing? If that's so, I was wondering what its like in terms of manoeuvring and parking compared to the Sport, given that its even bigger? also any other pros and cons between the two, you may care to mention? Thanks in advance, if you do.
@dirkdesouza5975
@dirkdesouza5975 3 жыл бұрын
@@shepchester3567 I really like the Disco, and because its not on the RRS platform, it has a longer wheelbase, it sits more comfortable on the road. The highway manners on it are also more relaxed and it just seems to smooth out the bumps and thumps better than the RRS. Taking nothing away from the RRS, I do love this gen of car it is more "nimble" and handles better, the Disco just seems "more grown up" if you like. Driving around town though you will feel its size. This is a "big boy" and never lets you for get that. I guess having the two extra "real seats" in the back has its cost of largeness. Hope that helps.

I bought mine new in 2017. I have almost 60k miles on mine. Tons of little frustrations especially in fit and finish (squeaks) and infotainment issues. I seem to (knock on wood) have most of those issues dealt with after three sometimes-frustrating years. This vehicle does do a lot of things exceptionally well. Extremely comfortable, capable and spacious, great ride with air suspension. Great tow vehicle.

When you start the car just let it get warm and turn off the start stop... The engine will last long... The most problems come with the heat shock, when driving agressive when the engine is cold. These engines are good they have an iron block and aluminium head. Just let it get warm do not exceed 2200 rpm until its warm. Cheers

@@Sweepdog700 The working coolant temperature is 90 degreem celsius and oil about 95. If you dont wait until your engine is warm and you thottle it hard above 2200 rpm you stress the engine (metal). The result is excesive wear of the engine. An another problem from my opinion is that the new ingenium engines are made of aluminum which aborbs faster but cools faster too. Trust me let the engine get warm and everything will be ok... i know ist boring... but it is same like a person ho run 10 miles if you are not warmed up :D. Cheers!

Owned Disco 5 HSE for a year ...306hp 3 ltr diesel which is creamy smooth, potent and efficient. Other than the spare wheel pressure sensor continually raising a fault it’s been totally reliable. 14,000 miles. Drives like/better than previous RR Sport x2 and RR Vogue. I also own 2004 Disco 2.5 ( run out model) and after 16 years it is still lovely... yes it’s agricultural in comparison but as a “mobile skip” and green lane diva it’s brilliant. One tip on spec... the sun roofs will eventually become a problem... electro mechanical items exposed to massive heat and cold swing, rough car washes and rubber seals never “oiled” with silicon spray are asking for long term issues eventually.

I recently picked up a used (2019 Lux, 3.0sdv6 in white, with a good spec-on-top so to speak) and am happy thus far. I steered away from the 2 litre chiefly as I'd heard about the issues you experienced, you were lucky to have had warranty! Well done & I think you have a very balanced opinion given the woes you've experienced with yours! This one I have, has around 8 months of LR warranty remaining. I'm seriously considering swapping the piano black interior trim inside though (£1,300 with discount!); even at 16k miles it's not faired well (this car came direct from Land Rover mgmt). In the past, I've had several Defenders (a 300tdi 90 & 3 or 4 subsequent Td5's in 110 guise - the latter engines of which I thought were great, just love the td5's distinctive engine sound - particularly when coming off the accelerator when in motion!). I have always liked the Defenders & if money & space were no objects, I'd have a very tailored to my-eye 90 too! Over the years, I've run a Discovery 3, then a 4 followed by an L322 Range (4.4tdv8) & then this one. None of these were new at all (I did run a new Volvo V90 XC Ocean Race inbetween & very briefly a new RS7 though); I generally bought my discovery's & the RR with higher mileages on them & then did the often-required jobs (cam & fuel-pump-belts, transmission flushes, front lower arms & other common failure points) but this time I was aiming for a very nearly new, new-Defender (d300) but the used car market was such that I just wouldn't overpay as much for a (new-type) Defender as I would have needed to, when a Discovery 5 was essentially much better value for money all around for my needs. So whilst I've still over-paid for this D5, it was still 10-30k less than a good-spec Defender. So, I'm thinking about ordering a new Discovery 5 & using this D5 until the warranty lapses, which should more or less coincide with delivery of the new D5 (build time of the Metropolitan is currently 9-12months). I love how these cars are capable of so much, are so practical, comfortable and (I think) unlike the RR's, are far less bling. I loved your LR related video's inc. the wrapping - good job there for a novice 😁 I've never done any wrapping, except for some badly wrapped bits on a Fireblade I did in 2010. I've considered doing likewise for some external piano-black trim on this D5 but I think I'll probably replace the a/b/c pillar external-trims as one or two are quite badly marked & I'm not sure that after the effort, I'll be too pleased with the work my inexperienced fingers will have done! Btw, I thought the new D300 engine drives very well in a Defender, especially around town & at sub-60Mph speeds; not driven it in the D5 though; whilst it's less torquey than the SDv6, it' feels well tuned around town (at motorway speeds, the SDv6 seems to pull much better). The D350 in the L405 is even better but then, that vehicle feels heavier; wouldn't a D350 option in a D5 be nice, albeit unlikely but I would very much like that additional power without compromising its reasonable fuel consumption figures.. Love your video's, channel & opinions :)

Just selling my 3 litre HSE Lux. 4 years old in October. All wheels are badly tarnished but LR would not replace them when I raised it before warranty expired. Rotary gear selector sometimes defaults to Sport setting on start off so engine stuck in a low gear, revving the cold engine unnecessarily. Raised it in warranty period - nothing done. Disappointing as have bought last three LRs almost new from same dealer. It’s a great car, extremely comfortable but it has it’s faults. Going back to Lexus

My windscreen also leaked. JLR admitted a manufacturing fault and offered replacement. They refused to honour my consumer rights and dealership rebonded the original windscreen which apparently was too small for the aperture. Nightmare at the beginning of covid with multiple electrical faults as a result of the water ingress. If you buy outright they just don't want to know about any faults. After happily owning a 1991 discovery 200 DTi for 10 trouble free years then having to sell it as i became disabled, the much later ones have become utter crap, the latest Defender Is a car with a landrover badge.. For the last few years i have made do with a freelander 1 TD4 (BMW engine) automatic HSE version, but looking for an older 200/ 300 DTi or a TD5 with its swiss Cheese chassis - Have welder - will fix - but the newer ones are pure electrickery crap./ The landrover history of company ownership Is the problem, purchased by various car companies thus changed power plants like an essex girl changes her high heals, its current owners are just an INDIAN multi conglomerate famous for its steel mills (shame they never provided Landrover with its steel for TD5 chassis eh ?.).. THE car to own IF you want offroad reliability Is not on general sale yet, but, It looks a bit like a REAL DEFENDER, nothing like the smarmed up products now available from RR or LR.. try googling "Grenadier"

I really need to stop looking at this brand. Very interested in the vehicles but so many people have problems with relatively new ones I think I'd need to be extremely lucky to even make it out of a three year lease without something breaking and not being covered under warranty. It seems to me too many things go wrong. I'm looking at Ford at the moment and I've had nothing but problems in my early days of driving with Ford but I have this sense that Land Rover is no more reliable with three times the price tag.

@@thedoctorsgarage hear me out, if u buy a range rover u have to rally take a look at what engines are brakeing often. If i would be buying another land rover i would buy a 306hp 3.0 diesel or a 256hp 3.0 diesel. Those engines are the most reliable in my opinion. I agree with you- at the time of buying didn’t realise but from what I’ve seen the 3.0L engines do seem to have less issues. The downside being you have to service a 3 every year but every 2 years with the 2L. I suppose that’s a small price to pay for the engine not to break!

@@thedoctorsgarage well for instance, driving the car 1 mile to pick your kids up and coming home, letting the fuel tank sip the last litre of fuel before filling it up, thinking a coolant temperature gauge means the cars warm and you can start driving everywhere at full throttle. Driving a cold engine hard is the biggest one, and although not an owners fault, oil change intervals are too long on todays cars. And Damn people, learn some wash technique, every used land rover or range rover ive seen looks like it was washed with 60 grit sandpaper and fairy liquid
