They basically liquify inside in the chrysalis before becoming the butterfly and yet studies show that their memories (associating a light with food) survive. It's the same individual, but transformed

I grow milky sap plants specifically for this reason. Monarchs feed on these plants, lay eggs, hatch and the cycle continues. My boys and I love doing this.

So beautiful. It breaks my heart that they are on the decline, as are fireflies, headed for extinction. People need to be aware of that. They were everywhere when I was growing up. Now in diminished numbers & seldom seen in many areas. I hope & pray that can be reversed to some degree.💙🌿

the butterfly itself is not in danger of extinction, the migration through the US into Mexico is endangered.

"Monarch Butterflies, once a familiar sight, are plummeting toward extinction due to landscape scale threats from pesticides, development & climate change. Monarchs have declined 85% in two decades. The western population, which overwinters in California as part of its international migration, has suffered a heartbreaking 99% decline. Overall the migrating populations are less than half the size they need to be to avoid extinction." And that's just part of the research being done by multiple organizations. There are many other insects in rapid decline as well as bird species & mammals, not to mention species of fish & other aquatic life (both freshwater & marine). The statistics are horrifying.

Monarchs are common in India. You can see plenty of eggs, larva , pupa etc here . I have seen this beautiful process on the madar tree in my garden 🏡🥰 But still this is amazing 😍

I have three butterfly tattoos, because I lost 3 pregnancies. They are my favorite. Before I lost my first baby I felt him move and it felt like butterflies in my stomach. So I have a monarch on my stomach to the left of my bellybutton where I felt the baby move. Now butterflies represent for me change and enlightenment in my current lifespan. ☮️❤️🙏🌼 My favorite quote;::: Perhaps butterflies are a reminder that we must go through a great deal of darkness to find our light. 💫🌟👽

I remember raising painted ladies in kindergarten and bringing one home that couldn’t fly because someone stepped on it. I gave it sugar water and it seemed to be doing great so I set it on my finger to bring over to my friends house to show her but when I got there I looked at my finger and she was gone. I ran back home crying and found her being carried away by ants, she was dead. I love butterflies and they’ve got to be one of my favourite animals alongside snakes and cats

Weird question but I live in Florida and I have read that rearing butterflies is affecting the migratory population and causing some issues but what about the Florida population that doesn't migrate and we have no special monarch season so releasing them at anytime is ok. I just want to make sure that what I am doing is helping not hurting the monarch population as it relates to the Florida population
