As a Great Pyrenees owner, they are definitely not an easy dog to handle if you don't know what you are in for. They are bred to be stubborn and loud, but they are as loyal and loving as a dog can come. You just need to understand them and be willing to train yourself to be a good owner for them. My boy Ranger is definitely a lot to handle, but I wouldn't trade him for the world.

We lost our Goliath, 110 lb GP 2 1/2 years ago. He was dumped. I, thinking a small car had parked behind me, got out of my vehicle and the “car” was walking towards me! Of course, after learning he wasn’t microchipped and no tags and he looked old, took him home. Well he was young! Maybe 2. Yes stubborn and yes he barked all night, but it really became music as I knew he was protecting us. Forget leash walking... he just walked us all into a circle and then sat in front of us! But he never ate our chickens and was the sweetest soul! We had him for 12 years!

They are bred to watch over goats and sheep and such. So without that to do they can become very board and restless. I used to have one she was a great dog. I loved her dearly. She not only protected my animals but was fearsly protective of our family. We had 8 acre's and she could run wherever she chose. Even though we were in the country we were still having problems with being broke in to. One night my daughter's boyfriend came in to tell me she was running someone through the horse field. I told him it was ok that she was just doing her job which she loved. But a week later she was gone. We looked everywhere but never found her. It broke my heart. I miss that big sweetheart. I know someone killed her just to get her out of the way. RIP bonnie you're definitely missed.

If it's not a member of your family, be kind enough to set them free again and give someone else a chance to love them... As a side note, ALWAYS adopt from shelters. In Australia they are overflowing and many good bois & girls are being put to sleep needlessly because their is no room. Escape artists, huh? That would explain my niece's puppy. He's part Great Pyrenees (and mini Australian shepherd, fun mix) and had to be kept in a kennel after a medical procedure (I think he had an infection or something) so he wouldn't injure himself. Thing is, he kept climbing the wall and getting into the main part of the barn. Keeping him in the house wasn't an option because he'd get into the trash cans at night.

Are rich retired people not some of the best type to offer a dog, who has had some problems, a special home?
@catkatt28553 жыл бұрын
Rich or poor the dog has a great home now with lots of room and people who are able to be with the dog round the clock. If I could be that person I would. I have to work my a*s off and theres nothing wrong with that but for a dog with potential issues..... he is a lucky dog. My mom's dog kept getting returned (4 times) because she would bark when other adopters would go to work. Mom is retired and here all the time and the dog is the best dog I have ever been around. If I could choose.... I would choose all the time in the world to spend with my pets.... I'm not apologizing for that.

When Bruce almost cried at the end, I felt that. My parents rescued two Great Pyrenees, Cosmo and Sadie, and they're affectionate and beautiful. People usually underestimate the amount of space these huge dogs needs, and are put off by their loud barks. They do best in male-female pairs, and are an absolute joy! They have such great personalities and Captain seems like such a sweetie. So glad he found such a wonderful forever home!
@lisanull9004 жыл бұрын
In order to give any dog a forever home it's important to be able to understand the dog's personality & characteristics of the breed (s). Despite claims by some that keeping a dog outside is cruel, there are dogs that aren't fond of being inside...some not at all, some only for a short time. Large dogs need room to move around (inside & out). Working dogs require exercise & plenty of it, keeping them occupied keeps them happy & out of mischief. I rescued a GP puppy from the pound several years back. Such a wonderful personality, but at the time we couldn't give her a forever home.....so we took great pains in finding the perfect one just for her. We turned out to be her "foster" instead of forever. GPs are huge, amazingly loving, loyal, intelligent, working dogs.....they need exercise and something to do. Odds are high previous owners didn't quite meet breed requirements for Captain. So glad Capt has gone to his forever home at last. Nice story to wake up to.

Pyranees are bred to protect livestock. They are usually outdoors. My friend has two and they are great dogs!
@meredithcarroll62094 жыл бұрын
We had two Pyrs (one died very suddenly on us, we still have the other) and I honestly watched this hoping these people actually researched the breed, especially since he's not a puppy. Our girls were the first Pyrs that we got (as puppies), and hopefully they're not our last because I absolutely love the breed, but I did *so much research* before getting them. We raised both of ours to "guard" our daughter, so they never had a problem being inside. Our remaining Pyr is zonked out on the floor about five feet from me as I watch this, has a bed, her own chair, likes sneaking up on the couch, and is addicted to red solo cups, but if Captain was left outside most of the time and they haven't given him a specific purpose, I foresee a LOT more shredded dog beds in their future. Plus that fence...yikes. That is not gonna hold him if he makes it to the edge of the property.

Being qualified to have a dog or a cat has nothing to do with it when it comes to Pyrs. They are not your typical dog. They were bred to guard livestock by themselves in the Pyrenees mountains, so they're intelligent, loud, obstinant, loud, fiercely independent, loud, need to have a job, and - oh yeah - they're loud. They won't chase balls, they can't catch treats, they have a very slow metabolism so they don't really spend a ton of time zooming around the backyard or needing to go on walks, and they'll bark for half an hour if they think a butterfly farted two miles away. They're basically gigantic, *really loud* cats who will take your commands under advisement and then do whatever the hell they damn well please. If you get them as a puppy it's not hard at all to get them used to being house dogs (speaking from experience, it helps if you have a four-year-old they can "guard" so they have a job), but if you get a full grown Pyr who's used to being outside the transition is going to be much harder, and I can fully understand someone not being prepared. People really don't know how very different they are from a yellow lab or a golden retreiver, or even your run of the mill mutt. I can definitely see how someone would fall in love with him, get him home, and have to bring him back because he wouldn't stop barking *ever* and the neighbors were threatening to call the cops if they couldn't get him to stop (and because they're double coated you can't use things like bark collars, they don't even feel it). Also, unless you've got a fully fenced back yard with a 6 foot fence, they *will* escape and then they'll roam for miles if given the chance. Plus the amount of hair they shed on a daily basis! Within a week you have enough to spin it into yarn and knit a sweater. *Every week.*

I just wanted to add some more information about Captain, 3-1/2 years after our adoption, for those who may be revisiting this video. He is in great shape and it seems every day he is more and more comfortable with freedom. I believe his situation for over 1/2 of his life (over 2 years) in a small cage was very marring. Some of the "new stuff" he has learned...he now knows what a belly rub is!! For the first 2 years, he would not let us touch his paws, or understand how great a scratch of a belly can be. In the last 6 months, now before he goes to bed, he stares at me, as if saying, "you forgot something, Dad". And then he gets a huge belly rub (as he is huge), and with a little help, rolls all the way on his back and really gets a long scratch! And he is talking all the time, grunting and pawing the air with some massive paws. You have to be careful to stay clear of those...as he has "learned" to paw the outside doors to get in or out, we have hundreds of scratches on the wood, and even the glass! Some have commented on his food...the guys thinks he is a connoisseur. Won't eat the same thing every day. I need to bury a small bit of human food (leftovers) and then he will eat dry dog food. He goes though a 40 lb bag a month, and now because one of his cousins likes the Costco brand stuff, he likes it. He follows me everywhere. At first he was not interested in liking humans, but now when anyone comes by, he is the "Greeter-at-the-Gate". He can't wait for someone to pat him and to shed some of that long white hair on them. We did the DNA test on Captain, and it turns out he is 45% Great Pyrenees 50% Shepherd, and 5% something else, I can't remember as I age with "Cap". My guess is "elephant". It looks like someone breed him to be a "Shep-Nees", some fancy expensive breed, and realized that he was going to be big so gave him to a shelter. We are happy to have him as part of our family!
