Wally the wild walrus surprised everyone when he showed up in Ireland in the summer of 2021. Walruses don't typically travel that far South and because he didn't have access to ice, he settled for the next best thing - boats! His trip around Europe didn't end there and he eventually made his way to Spain! But things really took an even more surprising turn when a second walrus, Freya was also spotted in Europe at the same time.

@@justin.channelsyou're absolutely right. Let's kill the animal bc people are to stupid to stay away from them. They had a few different options. 1. Take her to her kind and then monitor her to make sure she does well with her own kind. 2. They could have put her in a zoo, not my favorite option, or sanctuary. 3. Could have made sure stupid ppl would stay away and leave her alone. This is why we have extinct animals. We kill them when they get to close. Maybe they should be allowed to kill us when we get to close. We are encroaching on there habitats not the other way around. We've been doing it as long as humans have been around. It's disgusting to here that any animal in today's world is being killed. There are exceptions to this of course, like end of life or to hurt to be fixed. If it can't live in the wild but could live some where else then put them in the foster or adoptive home or in a zoo or sanctuary where they can be cared for. Just bc an animal can't live in the wild doesn't mean they should be killed. We need to do better for our animals, all of them wild or not.

Doing that to a massive marine mammal is extremely dangerous for those involved and for the animal, not to mention the absurd price of moving around large marine mammals. @@seanhiggins2740 Yes, and have you heard of the grizzly man? Loved nature, showed the world how gentle bears were. Until he got killed by a bear he had known and interacted with for years. Wild animals are predictable to an extent, but completely safe? especially animals of that size and strength? Never. Don't take the chances, or else you will regret it. I have no doubt that 9 times out of 10, the animal could be transported safely, but not guaranteed safety is just not enough. Massive wild animals are just not predictable enough, and have the power to cause serious harm.

I favor humans over animals. Our evolved minds can create morality that lets us work communally to survive and thrive as a species. We don't spend all our resources to save one person to live another month. We make moral judgments about cost versus benefit of a person's life. We typically see those issues at end of life stages. Most people don't factor in that it is only because we have become so technologically and socially successful that we can even make moral decisions about how much time, talent and treasure to spend on people with little to offer or little time left. These decisions have only been an option for less than a hundred years. Most of human existence we lived short hard lives. Catch a flu and you're dead in a couple days. Cut yourself farming and your're dead in a week. We are mammals and like all live birth animals about one in four women died during childbirth or become so disabled that they died in less than a year. It has been only in the past several decades that the technical option and wealth existed to even possibly do something like relocate Ashley Graham (her real name). The next question is whether it is right to confiscate taxpayer money to pay to give her a new home. I don't think so. There are plenty of charities concerning animals and if any of them had come forward with the cash to relocate her; they were free to do so. Why is no one blaming Peta or some rescue organizations?

How could anyone be so heartless as to kill something that docile and gentle only seeking a social connection with other creatures out of loneliness? She hasn't even attacked or shown any sort of aggression, its just needlessly cruel like even Harambe had a single flimsy reason that the public was already stressing him out and they had to choose the kid or him and that sedation would have been dangerous. In both cases they should have had someone friggin herd the humans away. I cannot believe that has to be a thing now, are we as a species that entitled to enforce our will on intelligent and non violent acting animals?

@@klauslunde What you said makes literally no sense. Your point also seems to indicate that removing her and relocating her wasn't an option, which it damn well was. Yet another person taking it personally. I assume you're from Norway. I don't typically make such assumptions, but just like another person spamming excuses all around with the same last name, it's the only thing that makes sense. Nobody is blaming Norway for having to find a solution to protect people and property. Everyone is blaming Norwegian wildlife officials for the solution they chose, out of several options. That's the difference here. In addition, about the caring for every single insect jibberish you were saying. Humans don't HAVE to care about only one thing at a time. For all we know, if the commenter sees an insect in their house they relocate it outside. Many people do. I do that. It's not thay uncommon. Making the assumption that they jump to kill everything they see is just stupid and is excusing poor behavior from other entities that DO take to this method automatically, such as this case with Freya. The fact that two other countries did the right thing previously and set a precedent for proper control in such a situation simply makes Norway's handling of the situation that much more deplorable.

@@schousehead Freya's death was really sad but unfortunatly predictable. Even ignoring the cost of a few sunken boat. Because People weren't respecting her and keeping their distance, she became a potentialy dangerous animal. Keep in mind that, as friendly as she was, she was a 600kg walrus and when she would have hurt someone by accident, injuries can quickly be serious even fatal. I mean, people were swimming with her for goodness sake! Experts also warned people that she was showing signes of overstress, probably due to her innability to find somewhere calm and away from the crowd to be able to rest correctly. And for the tranquilizer idea. When shot, a 600kg animal will take time to start "sleeping", that is if you manage to get past the blubber at the first shot. You can't, without a lot of heavy equipments and staffs, contained a wild walrus on a boat therefor she would have most probably be scared by the dart, jumped into the arbour, passed out and drowned! A slow, silent and horrifiyng death. Instead she was killed by a shot in the head with a gun while she was sleeping. Her death was instant and painless. I love animals but I always try to be objective. As much as it saddened me, the gouvernment decision seems logical to me.

I cried off and on throughout the day when the news hit about Freya. I kept imagining over and over again her not trying to get away and even, curious and unafraid, moving closer toward the crew who were to euthanize her. I wondered if those people were crying, too, acting on someone else's directives while that person sat at their desk miles away. The arrogance and ignorance of the decision to kill her is on one hand minbogglong, but on the other, typical for us as humans. We think we own this place, but sooner than later, we're going to pay the price for regarding animals and nature like they're ours to control.

@@amandadonegan2137 ugh. I know. For a very long time, I have wanted to go to the Faroe Islands for their amazing beauty, but that practice is, I think, a deal breaker. It's not just that season, either, it's that I know mingling with the locals would mean sometimes chatting with people who view it as a positive thing. Even if I did my level best to avoid the topic, which I definitely would, I'd know. And even though I know my perspective as a foreigner who has no lived experience of the islanders' history or traditions and so in many ways, should be cautious in making judgements, it's hard to unsee the photos and videos. On the other hand, I've also thought that maybe I could go during a low-hunt time of year and while there, visit some of the bays and have a quiet spiritual moment, sort of telling the whales (and dolphins) that I'm sorry they died that way, which was likely painful and prolonged. I'd also throw in that if we do try hard to find a silver lining, it's that their deaths were not as senseless as many other animals' (and people's) are, and that in their case, their bodies are used to the maximum extent to feed many meals to many of the island's inhabitants, hopefully some of which will grow up and be very concerned about the mercury content in the whales and dolphins and rethink their diets and gradually develop other food avenues. Life is so complicated. They never tell you that when you're a little kid! But that's probably for the best. Temporary ignorance is temporary bliss, and all kids deserve bliss.

Walruses are not native to Norway, nor is the inner Oslofjord and Oslo city it’s habitat🤣🤣🤣 As a Norwegian who lives in Oslo, I can tell you that you’re right in that they should have sedated her and moved her, but your other claims are not true. Also she just kept coming back. At one point she was on her way out, but apparently as a baby, she was not an adult yet, she liked destroying our boats to use them as madrases, eat sea birds, and chase after people in the water. Yes, it’s the public’s fault as they couldn’t leave here alone. Yet when you’ve never seen a walrus before, would you?! Also move her where? The arctic is a bit far away for them to move here all the way there… easy to judge. And the huge irony and paradox how people are all upset about one walrus being put down, yet how many of them eat meat everyday? Is a walrus more worth than any calf, lamb, chicken etc?!
