@Rebecca Kennedy I've been rescuing dogs age 12 and up and had three to five dogs at a time. Vet bills were as high as $3000 two of the years. Other years haven't been near as high. I've paid for things that weren't an absolute necessity such as cherry eye removal and teeth extraction. My boxer had chronic diarrhea and cancer. Rott mix had horrible arthritis. RimadyI was expensive. I took her to pool sessions. She was the hardest to deal with. Two more developed lung cancer. My current three are good so far. Hardest part is falling in love with them and then losing them in three years or less. I have no regrets. I gave them all a very loving home and a good life in their final days. They deserved it. I don't make a lot of money. I can afford this because I don't have cable or home internet, I have a cheap cellphone plan, rarely eat out, and drive a twenty year old car. I don't give the dogs heartworm meds during the winter months and I clean their teeth myself with a doggie dental scraper. I also do deworming myself with Dogworms 3 from 1800PetMeds or Quad Dewormer. The only vaccine I do is rabies, except for Rott mix who had to have all vaccines for pool sessions.

@@catrinahartz944 my old border collie mix Wilbur liked to be 18. But I do agree Ace does act more puppy then an elderly man. Instead Ace lives everyday with a prance at being alive in a home with a lady who saved his life and bailed him out of the shelter. Shelters says that the shelter isn't the right place for puppies it is 100% not a good place for an elderly dog. The perfect for an elderly dog is in a house with a lap of their human to lay on despite them not being a lap dog.

I used to think my pupper was going to continue to be energetic and active for so much longer but now at 14 he's really slowed down. He developed hip dysplasia at around 8 or so but it didn't really effect him much. Unfortunately after developing a condition where's she's slowly losing feeling in his hind legs and after two bouts of Old Dog Syndrome I had to come to terms with the fact that he might not make it to 16 as I had hoped/expected. It's taken a lot of work for his body to adjust to the changes and for us to figure out how to best help him but right now we've got the hang of it. We lift his waist for him if he needs up stairs and we've built a grippy ramp for him outside. He's more prone to accidentally poop indoors or in inconvenient places but we have tile floor so it's a minor annoyance. We give him much shorter walks now and we put booties on his hind paws because he can drag them and they'll bleed and we use a strap to give him additional stability in his hips. Before he could walk around the entire village in rain or snow.

Y'all, senior cats and dogs are the best. Just like humans, the older you get, the more life experience you have, the more likely you are to really appreciate the good experiences and especially when circumstances change for the better. I swear to God they know. And because they know, they will show you in ways that you could never have imagined how thankful they are and how much they love you. Many county and city shelters as well as rescues in your community have a senior pet adoption program. These cats and dogs are so worthy of a deserving home to live their senior years. I mean, isn't that what anyone of us would want when we're old and infirm? To just be accepted and loved for who we are?

Amen! I just adopted an 11.5 year old Chihuahua. They told me she was 9. Turns out she needs seizure medication. At first, I was like, "Oh, no... what have a gotten myself into." Anyhow, she is the most loving, affectionate little chi I've ever met. I needed her more than she needed me to heal from my 12 year old chi I lost in November. Sometimes these senior pets pick you because they just KNOW. Even though the new pup needs meds, I wouldn't trade her affection for the world. She can spend her Golden years with me. Love this. 💕🐕🐶💐

@@ceecee8757 so, so we'll stated!! And big, huge ups to you for adopting a senior. I've adopted two senior cats in my past, 14-year-old Clide and 8-year-old Henry. They are no longer with us sadly. Clide passed from cancer at about 16 and 1/2 years old, and we adopted Henry in Clide's memory and honor because Clide was also a diabetic, and Henry's family was going to euthanize him when he was diagnosed with diabetes. Honestly, neither of the families that gave those cats up to the shelter deserved them, but in a way I thank them because I was the absolute beneficiary.

@Colin Quinn I'm so sorry! Cancer sucks completely. But 12 years is still really special. I'm sure your pug is still watching over you ❤️

My Uncle had a Husky/ German Shepherd that lived 19+ years and never slowed down until the end. He was a farm dog that lived with my Uncle, his wife and their 5 children. My Grandmother had the farm next door. "King" was a fixture on the farm from when I was 3 until 2 years after I got out of the Navy. I thought the dog would live forever. I hope my German Shepherd that I got from Germany (where else?) will have that length span! He will be 7 in February and is with me 20 hours a day. Even though he was a puppy, I have adopted 9 dogs in my life and the next time I get a dog it will be an adoption. Those shelter dogs are great to give a home to. My dogs always sleep on the bed with me outside the covers and there is nothing like a dog brought home from a shelter. The joy they show you once they realize they have a home is indescribable!

Love foster fails. So so happy for ace!!. Cried many happy tears 😭 was scared for a min that he wasn't going to get to keep this wonderful woman & his 2 fur siblings and then she kept him and I could breath again. Best of everything to all of them. Thanks💕🐾

I saw his video when he picked out his first toy. To see him in a home brings me to tears. Thank you Dodo for sharing with us this wonderful update on Ace and for letting us know that Ace has finally found his furever home.

When "Ace" took the lead in the walk, I was like he's gonna be part of this family now. So happy I was correct! 🐾 I adopted a senior cat from my cities shelter. Have had her for two yrs now. She 12yrs young and feisty as ever. After losing my other sidekick, who I raised from a kitten until he was 13, it was the best decision. I didn't have the heart to train another kitten. I was still grieving from losing my dear humbug. She fit right in and made herself at home.
