The hardest part of having a dog, is losing them. They truly are ' man's best friend '
@kirkthiets27713 жыл бұрын
There's a very, very good reason the brightest star in the evening sky is in the Great Dog, Canis Major, constellation. It's ancient technology. By having a dog you are or you become aware of everything they're aware of. They unfortunately do not live long enough. I've had about a dozen of them, til death do we part. I can not abandon love, and they are pure unconditional bundles of love. No dog I've ever had is anything like any dogs I've had before too. They all possess their own unique personalities... But it's always a love story. I can not imagine abandoning my dog. I've had him boarded for just a few days once. He shuts down. Stops, won't eat. I can not bring myself to break an innocent heart that has brought me comfort and joy for years upon years. It's tough when they start going downhill, but it's worth every second even still.

Wow, the way he suddenly had the energy and confidence to run is, to me, a testament to a dog's need for love. He had been just waiting it out at the shelter until he died, but once there was someone and something to live for he transformed. I know this is just one dog out of literally millions in his situation, but it does me good to think that this boy's last time was spent with caring and affectionate people.

The great thing about our dogs is that they can share their love without it getting any smaller. Few people can do that too. Many years ago I took a dog from a very insecure family and passed it on afterwards. He was only with me for a short time. After that I saw him less often, sometimes only once a year. He always remembered me and the fact that I took him out of the unfortunate situation back then. His friendship was huge. And he loved his new dad dearly. I think he remembers Zach, a good memory without despair, just good.

During the course of pandemic, all three of my little dogs passed from old age, 16YO, 18YO & 20YO+. Left me broken-hearted, big time. Six weeks ago, I adopted an 11YO shepherd mix from a local shelter. He'd been left there b/c of "medical problems" (he has autoimmune disorder & so do I), adopted & returned, languished in shelter a long time. I heard his story over the phone & said I wanted him sight unseen, told my friends "I'm letting God choose my next dog. When the shelter volunteer brought him out, I thought, "Oh Lord, what have we done?" Dog was scruffy, aloof, dull coat, 55 lb. & obese, listless, ignored humans, pulled hard on his leash: a singularly unappealing animal who looked like a junkyard rescue dog on "Animal Cops Houston." He perked up once he was in the car, as if he knew he was leaving dog prison. Within 24 hours, he'd developed a PASSION for being brushed. Over several days, I pulled GALLONS of dead hair & dry skin off my new dog. Within a week of brushing & grain-free diet, he was losing weight & gleaming like a wet seal. Now, 6 weeks later, he sits, waits at the door instead of rushing ahead when we go for walks, comes when called, walks quietly by my side on the leash, brings his toy so we can play fetch, smiles, has lost weight, acts silly sometimes, has learned to howl when I howl, crawls on his tummy when I say "bang," etc. His name is now Edward (his dignity demanded a dignified name) & he's so good, people think he was "well trained" before I got him. Nope! He's just a grateful & brilliant dog who loves to love & learn. However long Edward remains here on this earth, I'll do my very best to make his life wonderful. ADOPT A SENIOR DOG! THEY'RE WONDERFUL!

It breaks my heart when people dump their senior dogs. Adopting a dog is for life, not just when they are young. You need to love them through the weak bladders, bad stomachs, arthritis, and everything else that old age throws at them. You are their entire world, their home and their hearts. Your dog will love you to their last breath, you owe it to them to love them until theirs. 💔💔

@theindigopapillon34953 жыл бұрын
@@hello-up1fo That is a very different situation and not what I described. "Not just when they are young." Many people mindlessly adopt dogs without taking cost into account. I wanted a dog for years before I adopted mine, but waited until I was in a better financial position. I also pay for health insurance for him, in case he ever has big expensive medical issues. Loosing a job/home/ or medical condition absolutely makes sense to give your dog to people who could help. However, many people adopt and when the dog is simply not as much fun or has normal aging problems they dump the dog. some of them go out and then adopt puppies again because they are cute and fun. I am specifically talking about those who want a pup only when it is convenient.
@michaeldavid68323 жыл бұрын
We created the dog. They are mankind's unconditional responsibility. Some of them can't even literally survive without us. We are their stewards. We created them to depend upon us. Any dog which isn't properly cared for is a betrayal of the implied contract we made with dogs when they joined us on the human journey. The contract: we'll take care of you and you will serve us and be our companions. We should love and care for dogs more than most people because most people don't depend on us like dogs do. People can take care of themselves, dogs shouldn't have to.

I think what a lot of pet owners don't understand is that adopting a pet is not for yourself, it is for that animal. It is to make their life happy, see joy on their face, be the best friend you can be and enjoy them for who they are. Same thing with humans. Don't judge by breed, age, ability; if you feel a connection take them in and love them even more than they love you. And that's a difficult task.

He was way too old to be passed around to another new home after he got so comfortable but I do get it at the sane time. Point is the dog has a forever home while most other’s gets euthanized at this age:(

Good foster families aren’t easy to come by. Each dog they keep is another they might not be able to foster. There’s thousands of Henry’s in shelters looking for a little hope and a second chance.

My dog lived to be 18 years old. One morning she couldn’t get up anymore and we had to say goodbye to her and it was heartbreaking. I loved that girl for 18 years. She knew she was special and wanted. I still miss that girl.

What a heartwarming rescue. It’s easy to judge his owner but cancer treatment is not affordable for many, and to the owner’s credit, he didn’t simply bring dog to vet to be euthanized- which many would have. I’m so happy Henry not only gets more time in his life, but get more LIFE in his time. G’boy!!

Bullshit! You don't dump your long time friend/family member into some shelter hellhole. Stop making excuses for atrocious behavior! I'll bet these people had car leases and expensive cell phones.
@fjp93 жыл бұрын
@@uclajd you have no idea what those people’s situation is. they could have also had other unexpected life situations like housing issues, money issues, health issues, combinations of issues, etc where they could not have been able to afford the treatment or followup care or have the time for it. they could have their own physical issues where they are unable to care for the dog after the treatment. they did not abandon him on the street or somewhere different. they did not put him down. they might have really struggled with the decision and had a hard time with letting him go. hopefully none of you will ever be put in a situation where you are worried about housing, money, health, etc and how you should responsibly take care of yourself and your families and your pets that you love. don’t be so quick to judge others when you do not know any of the facts.

The fact he is in such good condition means he was truly loved. Seeing a lot of comments lacking understanding of what it means to surrender a dog. It's not just being thrown out of abandoned. The family probably made the difficult decision due to not being able to pay get bills! A dog that old in such good condition was truly loved

We just adopted our first dog, and while I don't know if he counts as a senior, he is an older black labrador (7 years) and it feels so good to have adopted an older dog that had been surrendered by his old family. He acts like a very large puppy that doesn't understand he can't fit in people's lap.

Amen. I do the same. I’ve gotten homes for some & have kept others. A 10 YO, now 16, is still hanging in well. And I’m friends w/her mom now. Another 10 YO was too sick & too many ‘personality issues’ so we kept him till he passed from cancer 22 mos later. Broke our hearts. He was a real piece of work getting him to trust us, or anything. Had no clue how to even be a dog. We take solace in knowing ’Raggs’ had the best 22 mos of his otherwise horrid little life w/us. My current one was discarded at almost 12. They moved & she was tossed w/the rest of their old, unwanted stuff. She’s 13 now & full of life. No one believes she’s that old, b/c she just runs & carries on like a puppers half her age! Even my Vet is amazed. Has more energy than any other dog I had at 13. She has learned many new things & is now learning hand signals. Super smart gal! So playful & eager to please. I was going to get her a home too, but she is another tough placement. And now, is attached at the hip to me. Her love & loyalty is crazy! I usually only do 1 at a time. Too financially taxing to do more. Especially since my current one doesn’t like other dogs. Something I’ve never dealt with. :/ So we’ll see how this gal goes into ‘old age’. Cuz she sure isn’t showing it now! 😂😁 God bless you for taking the unwanted seniors. People have no clue how easily they bond w/new owners & continue to learn. Which is why so many are passed over & killed in the shelter they get dumped in. This gal was headed there too, until I found out about her. And drove 2+ hrs to get her. She would have never made it past an hour w/her dislike for other dogs & strange males. She would have gone down quickly. Now, she’s got a whole new life & loving it!👍😁🐾
