RR 1-3: Rebooting Super Smash Brothers!

ROUNDTABLE RELAY!!!
I've tossed out my pitch for a Smash Reboot, so now it's the audiences turn! In this livestream we are going to continue diving into viewer feedback, try to get to as many as possible, and see if anybody else has some cool ideas for what direction this series should take!

Appreciated all the love Advance Wars got in this stream. My boy Andy deserves it. The different concepts here are fun, though shout outs to Gabe for being the maddest of lads. Foiled also gives me ideas for how I might add to it myself. Between the Andy shout outs and the card stuff, I am very curious how people will think of my idea when it comes up. That said, to add onto the "don't let vets be DLC" philosophy, this was a huge problem for Dissidia NT. Square said, day 1, all vets from 012 (with the implied exclusion of Feral Chaos) would eventually return to the game. However, they had zero transparency regarding how DLC was handled, didn't line anything up with major releases, and unceremoniously killed off the game before they could actually make good on that promise. So not only did my main, Laguna, never get added back, but also Gilgamesh from V got shafted. _Gilgamesh_ of all people didn't make it in despite being _the_ reoccuring boss of the series and already having a phenominal set up for monitization by having costumes and weapon skins be based on the different games he's shown up in. And while I doubt Smash would have any problems with missing vets to the same degree (NT was an absolute mess, development wise), I have seen first hand how an otherwise dedicated fanbase can turn on a company when you open that door and don't follow through.

I think one way to add some personality in the series is make battlefield have an audience so it’s standing as a smash original feels more unique, so depending on what character you pick, it changes the audience in the background; so if you pick peach there’s a bunch of toads in the background but if player 2 picks Samus, there’s space pirates making bets on the other side of the audience. This could also be the only stage with specialised, more cinematic openings for characters as well. Also also, if we’re going in the heavily shortened roster direction, we should have commentators in battlefield, with them specifically being the Kid Icarus cast with cameos from different characters depending on who you play, such as Slippy and Peppy, Jimmy T, Ashley, Team Rocket and Louie.

Just wanna point out that if someone isn't acknowledging a warning like this, they probably don't want to draw too much attention to it. Apologies for ignoring you while live, but I wasn't aware of the context of the deletion, and I didn't want to check it live in case it was something the writer didn't want noticed, as that would've put everyone's eyes on it. Now that I've had time to check, doesn't necessarily seem like that was the case, the documents just flat-out gone. I've left a note for the writer in case they check it again, but apart from that there's not much more that can be done.

I'm so far more impressed with the concepts that either have smaller or no listed rosters within their pitches, mainly in that it speaks towards confidence in the direction itself without feeling like the direction can be only upheld by the inclusion of certain characters and/or specific mechanical tweaks. TheDragonSaver's "Brothers" takes charge on its duo-theming and gives us too few examples for a full roster to provide self-evidence that the concept has plenty to explore beyond what was said. It feels more like a genuine pitch for the idea of how the roster could take shape over being a pitch for a specific sequence of characters foremost that use a pitch thereafter to justify them. Meanwhile, Magic Ice's take that more crossover-series to compliment Smash Bros. than replace it altogether is incredibly broad yet poses a hard-to-challenge statement to begin with: Smash Bros. may not even necessarily *need* a reboot depending on how safe or unrecognizable these concepts end up being. I definitely hope we have more of these to see in the future, since I'm still not sure what some our goals are to begin with while being posed the choice of a roster between Alear or Geno, Kunio-kun or the Hanafuda Card Man. Honestly, a lot of this has me wondering about a few other things we need to figure out, like *who* this Smash Bros. reboot is even supposed to be for, or if this is in the context of something Nintendo *could* do or simply *should* do in our eyes. Ducko's pitch with the cards is interesting, but sounds like it quickly departs from the level of simplicity and immediacy of starting a Smash Bros. match that the series as it was is so good at maintaining in its current party-platform-fighter incarnation. Some of these other concepts get so high in systematic scope that it'd be incredible to ever see them achieved if this is meant in the context of something Nintendo would realistically aim for. Knowing what concepts I like the most will be easier once we get a better idea of our big picture imo (And hey, thanks for the 3 Questions shout-out first thing this stream, Akonu!)
