In all fairness “offence cannot be given, only taken” is kind of nonsense. It can certainly be given intentionally. Yet nowadays the BBC is so politically correct they would brand this as sexist and offensive and it would get cancelled as soon as somebody from the PC mob complained. Sadly the UK is being controlled by a vocal minority of PC nutcases who want anything they deem slightly offensive cancelled and we likely won't see comedy like this made again any time soon.

@@Will831100 " a vocal minority of PC nutcases " Do you think they'd object to a return of _The Black and White Minstrel Show_ ? The people i'm talking of nowadays just don't seem to get ironic comedy and parody or if they do they cannot seem to tolerate or understand it. I wish I could fully understand these people's ways but I can't pretend I do. All I do know from experience is you cannot for the most part debate or question them lest you face the cancel culture mob. For what it's worth I gave up TV for the most part myself several years ago also because as I pointed out about the BBC it's being taken over more and more by the woke, PC people and it's either repeats or politically biased nonsense for the most part, precisely why you won't see anything like this now. They're more concerned with making historical shows where Anne Boleyn is suddenly black so they can score brownie points with the woke brigade rather than be historically accurate. The more vocal among their number are Empty Vessels, of course - filled with the toxin of Cultural Marxism (call it what you will). And they are SO stupid, that they cannot even see how destructive they are to the society which has nourished and protected them, how manipulated by (excuse my poetic excesses, here) our Dark Masters - and how (in all probability) despised they are by the same as the 'useful idiots' _de nos jours_ ! It would "pass muster". The funny thing is, with so many things like this, that there are always way more people saying "you couldn't say that now.." (the implication being that PC has gone too far) about a given joke than there are people who actually object to it. Basically, the 'oppressed victim' status that some people on the Right try to claim is in their imagination. They love the 'you can't say that anymore' line, when in reality you can say what you like. There are still lots of satirical comics who use this exact style of deadpan irony to point out the ridiculous, and they do OK. Bill Burr for instance, often uses apparently face-value sexism to flag up the idiocy of sexism, and he seems to be doing just fine. A tiny group of irony deficient morons take to Twitter to complain and the VAST MAJORITY of reasonable, liberal, perspective-having people ignore them. Burr is uncancellable because he's a brilliant stand up, and his ticket sales seem to indicate that that tiny group of disingenuous, virtue signaling idiots have no effect at all, other than to give him more publicity and more fans. These fake liberals and their 'reactionary-for-effect' counterparts feed off each other. The one side loves to be outraged, complain and accuse while the other loves to offend, provoke and pretend to be oppressed. Here's the thing: A lot of second rate comics trade on PC, or the perception of it, for their act. Roy Chubby Brown simply uses the words 'Paki' and 'Queer' (even n****r) on stage and his fans scream with laughter and talk about how 'brave' he is to rail against PC. Ask yourself how brave he really is, when he knows his audience are a 100% white, straight monoculture who hang on his every epithet. The truth is, if there was no PC then those words would have no shock value and he'd actually have to write jokes instead. PC therefore works in the interest of the deliberately offensive, not against them, but they keep on claiming to be victims of it.

Alan, I'm male and I remember many years ago having a conversation with my late mother about the reason that I had a combination washer dryer rather than two separate machines to do my laundry in my home. The main reason was that I didn't have the space for two machines therefore I had to have just the one. Anyway, I was trying to explain the reason for the cold water having to be connected while I was using it purely to dry my clothes etc and she was adamant that they'd get wet rather than dry if the cold water was allowed to flow into the machine. I ended up saying that the cold water had to be turned on so that it could circulate around the drum so that the machine wouldn't overheat and burst into flames, i.e. to cool the machine down while it was operating purely as a dryer but she was so pigheaded that she kept droning on about my laundry being wet rather than dry when it came out of the machine that I eventually just gave up with her....it was either that or commit hara kiri so that I wouldn't have to listen to her antiquated nonsense. Fortunately for myself most of the conversations like this were over the phone and she couldn't see the faces that I used to pull when she started off on such unscientific rants therefore I could easily hang up on her. As the old saying goes " You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose but unfortunately you can't pick your family, can you? " or in her case " Parents should be seen and not heard! ".

They were used this style, which was the style of old Shor British Information Films. They were showing the ridiculousness of mysogony in our country, although I do think some part of Harry kinda felt that way too, or was at least open to the nonsense of it. I, as a British woman, young at this time, LOVED these sketches - hilarious and true. We were treated like that, and a lot of men talked like they wanted us to be like that. Tough - we ran the country when they were at war, and after that told to go back to our homes and women said Get Lost - and carried on the fights for equality. In this country, at least. 😋

Many people say that this wouldn't be allowed today, but I say just look at Derry Girls. It too is a satire on Derry during the Troubles, and it is both allowed and very funny.

Derry Girls is a bit different than this. LOVE Derry Girls. One of my favorite things I've reacted to.

Harry Enfield did a lot of sketches like this, his 1930s football sketch about. Charles Charlie Charles passing round tobacco during a game is hilarious

That was originally broadcast on BBC1 in a prime weekday evening spot.

Harry Enfield (and Paul Whitehouse) did so many amazing sketches. All in a time when people could see humor for what it is. Mr Cholmondley Warner, Smashy and Nicey, The Scousers, Harry and Lulu, The Slobs, The americans abroad, Saucy old ladies etc etc.

I remember when this came out originally on TV - it was gold! Fat chance of that happening these days... It is obviously a parody of the British Pathe info-films of the 1930's - 50's but that would be lost on the humourless, woke-brigade.

Harry Enfield is a comedy legend in the UK. He's been performing since the late eighties and has created legendary characters. You should check out "I Saw You Coming" He plays an owner of a shop that sells rubbish to women who have got rich husbands.

This is still on U.K. Gold tv channel this week. The Fast Show and Harry Enfield and Chums. Brilliant British humour which I still watch

Harry Enfield did a regular sketch, with Kathy Burke, featuring two babies in a play pen, called Harry and LuLu. It was based on his Step Children, Lily Allen (singer) and Alfie Allen (Actor - Game of Thrones). I think he met Paul Whitehouse, when Paul was decorating his house.

Probably Harry Enfield's best work. You should watch 'Norbit Smith, A Life'. He does all these 1940s 50s parodies. I love it!

This is such an accurate take-off of British Public Information Films of the 1930s' and 40s'. Love it.

Great observations. He should see the Harry Enfield Public Information Film about women drivers! As he said, irony, or in this case satire, just goes over the heads of so many young people today.

Brass eye - drugs (most complained about program on British TV, until...) Brass eye - peadogeddon If you fancy doing a one off radio reaction, the 'blue jam monologues' are sublime.

just subbed because you liked something that deserves to be aired to those who havnt seen it. cheers.

This was actually filmed in the 'nineties; Harry Enfield replicated the look of the old 1950s Public Information films (they ARE a real thing, and they are even more batshit depressing than any of the attitudes Harry Enfield was satirically lampooning.) This one is part of a series he did - if you search on Harry Enfield Cholmondley-Warner (pronounced Chumley-Warner, because Posh British is insane like that,) you should find some others, that are equally hilarious.

That show was made in the 90’s. I remember back then thinking how bold they were making a sketch like that at the time, never mind now.

Love your reaction. Harry Enfield & Co are masters of satire and take great delight in highlighting society's wrongs, as shown here.
