Bear with me as I blush over Dr, Michael Klaper coming on to my podcast, one of my favorite plant-based physicians for over a decade. It takes me a few minutes to get all the “thank you’s” out of my system before we dive into an inspiring conversation about not only the science but the logic of plant-based eating for everything - for your health, the health of the planet that our children and future generations will grow up on, and for the animals.
Dr. Klaper is a general practitioner, a 40+ year vegan, and a picture of health. At 74 years old Klaper shares evidence based nutrition with his youthful enthusiasm and has decades of experience reversing patients chronic illness to thrive with plant-based nutrition and integrative medicine. He now lectures at medical schools across the country to empower the next generation of doctors to better heal their patients with plant-predominant nutrition and lifestyle changes to get to the root cause rather than just treating the symptom..
In this episode dr. Klaper passionately covers
- His vegan story and life growing up on a dairy farm
- The basics of how to eat when transitioning to a plant-based diet
- Dairy, is it good for you? What about raw unpasteurized dairy?
- chronic illness and disease in America and how it’s largely from diet and lifestyle factors
- why there is so much confusion about what’s best for our health and conflicting information
- His thoughts on grass fed, free range and regenerative grazing animal products
- Animal agriculture’s impact on pollution, the climate and overall planetary health
- What about the farmers? If the masses switched to plant-based what will happen to the farmers?
- The Moving Medicine Forward Initiative to create a nutritional awakening among a new generation of doctors.
- Plant-Based Telehealth as a model of health-care for now and the future
- What keeps him going and motivated and not giving up out of frustration

this was so helpful to watch and remind myself of. I started making videos with our family to inspire others. but a vegan/plant based diet goes so much further than that, being educated on health and able to answer questions when people ask/accuse is also so important. I keep telling people to watch your podcasts & videos because YOU had such a big impact on my life and our family Ellen

I strongly agree with everything he's saying, I've been vegan almost 5 years but I recently got my permaculture design cert and I can't help but notice how animals are tied into the health of the land. They're part of the cycle, their manure and other processes help grow healthy crops. Should they just be kept as farm pets? For manure production? What do you do with all the eggs if anyone else keeps chickens as composters?

I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for this podcast, Ellen. I was back to mostly plant-based with some meat and dairy. After watching this video, I’m switching back to plant-based with occasional cheese and eggs. I plan to eventually go completely plant-based after I learn more recipes and nutrition within a plant-based diet. You’ve been a huge inspiration. Thank you!

I love this guy and his message, and yes - the place to do the most good is with Med students right from the jump. The number of docs who are unwilling to look for something better than sentencing their patients to a foreshortened lifespan filled with Big Pharma backing is truly sickening. I am encouraged that vegetarianism has gone mainstream over the past 20 years, but it's not enough and it's not happening fast enough.

I worked on a dairy farm, it opened my eyes, its true the cow bellowing and crying for hours , trying to break the gates down to get to their baby. When I told people about it they had no idea that's how we get cows milk. Most people don't know this. Thanks for your message.

The farmers say that the mother cow can sit or step on the calf therefore one of the reasons the calf’s are taken away. Is there any truth to this?
@edithtierce8209
@edithtierce8209 10 ай бұрын
@@11trickyrickNo it is so the calf doesn’t drink all of the milk… BUT not all dairy farms are like this though it is mostly how all of the largest producers are… My family has owned a dairy for generations in Minnesota and they do not run their dairy in the way you described. It eats into profits if you are trying to produce for big corporations who are corrupt and generally put unreasonable demands on farmers. They also demand way too many things are done in the name of “health” of the milk. It’s all disgusting tbh. If a person is buying from a smaller dairy… This is not what is going on. No cows are screaming and crying in agony at my family’s dairy…

I wish people would look into regenerative farming. It includes raising animals of course, but in a more natural way, aswell as crop rotation and planting crops that suck the carbon dioxide out of the air. It's a win win, helps the top soil, better for the planet, and keeps people fed. I also really wish people would address that there aren't any cultures that are 100% vegan. Our ancestors evolved to eat meat, although I would agree not nearly the quantities that the average American eats now. Even blue zones eat animal products, more fish and eggs rather than red meat. In my opinion based on research, going completely vegan isn't the answer, but I can definitely find common ground that we eat WAY to many animal products and we should be eating WAY more plant based foods.

I would be so interested to see an episode about "ex-vegans" at some point...like, what are some of the most common pitfalls that people seem to experience on a plant based lifestyle, and tips to avoid falling into those issues! I commonly hear people cite gut issues and bioavailability of various nutrients as reasons for shying away from plant based eating. I think it would be great to hear your perspective on this since you have maintained a vegan lifestyle successfully for so long, whereas many others have fallen away especially in recent years.

My MIL is on high blood pressure meds, has had two strokes and is obese and using a wheelchair because of her obesity and knows it’s her diet but absolutely won’t even consider a change. She tries to get us to order her cookies, candy bars in bulk etc. She is in a nursing home because she kept falling. We’ve tried to be compassionate but I don’t understand why she doesn’t care. She is only 63. So, I think Dr’s know that there are people who will refuse to change their diet even when truly uncomfortable, very ill and one foot in the grave. I don’t get understand it and it’s very sad but you can’t force change and that’s when a Dr has to give pills instead.

I had the pleasure of meeting this incredible Dr, who has the most amazing soul, he is delightful, he has the most caring manner. I met him for all of 5 minutes and had my picture taken with him at the Vegan Camp Out in the UK a few years ago. I honestly think vegans need to sit up and listen to Drs like him because sadly, the omnivores are waiting on the sidelines to see if our health fails JUST SO they can blame anything, anything that may go wrong health wise on the plant based diet. Its pathetic they fo this I know, but regardless, don't give them the opportunity to try.
